Solon
Solon (Greek: Σόλων; c. 638 – c. 558 BC) was an Athenian statesman, lawmaker, and poet. He is remembered particularly for his efforts to legislate against political, economic, and moral decline in archaic Athens. His reforms failed in the short term, yet he is often credited with having laid the foundations for Athenian democracy. He wrote poetry for pleasure, as patriotic propaganda, and in defense of his constitutional reforms.
Modern knowledge of Solon is limited by the fact that his works only survive in fragments and appear to feature interpolations by later authors, and by the general paucity of documentary and archaeological evidence covering Athens in the early 6th century BC. Ancient authors such as Herodotus and Plutarch are the main source of information, yet they wrote about Solon long after his death, at a time when history was by no means an academic discipline. Fourth century orators, such as Aeschines, tended to attribute to Solon all the laws of their own, much later times.

Jules Maigret
Jules Amedée François Maigret [ʒyl mɛɡʁɛ], simply Jules Maigret or Maigret to most people, including his wife, is a fictional French police detective, actually a commissaire or commissioner of the Paris "Brigade Criminelle" (Direction Régionale de Police Judiciaire de Paris), created by writer Georges Simenon.
Seventy-five novels and twenty-eight short stories about Maigret were published between 1931 and 1972, starting with Pietr-le-Letton (Pietr the Latvian) and concluding with Maigret et Monsieur Charles (Maigret and Monsieur Charles). The Maigret stories were also adapted for television and radio.
Description
The character of Maigret was invented, but after the first few novels was influenced by Chief Inspector Marcel Guillaume, said to be the greatest French detective of his day, who became a long-time friend of Simenon.
Film and Television adaptations
The cinematic potential of Maigret was realized quickly: the first screen Maigret was Pierre Renoir in 1932's Night at the Crossroads, directed by his brother Jean Renoir; the same year brought The Yellow Dog (film) with Abel Tarride, and Harry Baur played him in 1933's La Tête d'un homme, directed by Julien Duvivier.

Jack the Ripper
Jack the Ripper is the best known name given to an unidentified serial killer generally believed to have been active in the largely impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. The name "Jack the Ripper" originated in a letter written by someone claiming to be the murderer that was disseminated in the media. The letter is widely believed to have been a hoax, and may have been written by journalists in an attempt to heighten interest in the story and increase their newspapers' circulation. The killer was called "the Whitechapel Murderer" as well as "Leather Apron" within the crime case files, as well as in contemporary journalistic accounts.
Attacks ascribed to Jack the Ripper typically involved female prostitutes who lived and worked in the slums of the East End of London whose throats were cut prior to abdominal mutilations. The removal of internal organs from at least three of the victims led to proposals that their killer had some anatomical or surgical knowledge. Rumours that the murders were connected intensified in September and October 1888, and letters were received by media outlets and Scotland Yard from a writer or writers purporting to be the murderer. The "From Hell" letter received by George Lusk of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee included half of a preserved human kidney, purportedly taken from one of the victims. The public came increasingly to believe in a single serial killer known as "Jack the Ripper", mainly because of the extraordinarily brutal character of the murders, and because of media treatment of the events.

Based on Marshall Pugh's book Commander Crabb, it was made following the publicity created by Crabb's mysterious disappearance and likely death during a Cold War incident a year earlier.
Plot
The story begins with a dramatisation of the Italian manned torpedo raid on Alexandria (1941) in which two British battleships were sunk. The British are worried that this new Italian tactic will give the enemy naval supremacy in the Mediterranean. From Spain, an Italian expert on underwater operations is secretly watching the British base in Gibraltar and planning new attacks.
Maverick diver Lionel Crabb is brought in to head the British response. He creates a team of divers to intercept the Italian attacks and defuse the bombs. The Italians plan a major attack on a British convoy, but Crabb and another diver manage to infiltrate the Spanish docks from which the Italians are planning the attack, identifying the ship (the Olterra) which the Italians attack from. Crabb leads an unauthorised pre-emptive strike on the ship carrying the torpedoes and destroys it, winning the George Medal.
The British divers are shown as using Davis Submerged Escape Apparatus.

This film does not represent real events accurately:-
In particular, in the real world there was no attack on the Olterra, and no underwater hand-to-hand battle between Italian and British frogmen.
The breathing sets used by the film's actors representing the Italian frogmen are British naval type rebreathers (with fullface masks with oval windows like an eyes-and-nose mask's, and not with large rectangular windows as used by British frogmen and naval divers more recently) and not authentic Italian rebreathers, beause the Italian frogmen were acted by British naval divers, riding British-type manned torpedoes representing Italian maiali.
In the film Crabb dives on the wreck of a recently crashed B-24 Liberator that had gone into the sea just after taking off from Gibraltar Airport. This scene was based on the accident in 1943 in which Polish general Władysław Sikorski was killed. In the film the submerged wreck of an Avro Shackleton is used as a stand-in for the Liberator.
4. The part in the film showing the Liberator crashing into the sea is at Camp Bay. The crash actually happened off the eastern end of the runway crashing into the Mediterranean Sea.

The National Radio Show Earls Court 1961 Colour Tv demonstration
This footage, which I shot (16fps) on 'high speed' 16mm Anscocolor (100ASA!) shows the first UK public demonstration in 1961 of colour tv from the BBC. Sitting in a special glass fronted studio, two massive Marconi BD 848 colour cameras, each with a zoom lens, shot a simple interview set. The pictorial results were viewed on 405-line colour monitors in a nearby viewing room. Elsewhere on demo was a '625 line tv' gold fish tank shot with a Pye Mk5 b/w camera. The sharp-eyed will spot several 1960s 'stars'. Actor Ewen Solon, interviewer, Nan Winton, child star Mandy Miller and journalist Peter Noble. Singer unknown. Vergleicht man Simenons Worte mit dem Gesicht von Rupert Davies, so ist die Ähnlichkeit in der Tat frappierend. Des öfteren schwelgt die Kamera geradezu in Großaufnahmen dieses Antlitzes, in dem Güte und Verschmitztheit, Härte und Sanftmut sich auf wunderbare Weise ergänzen.
Binnen kürzester Zeit war mir sein Kommissar Maigret vertraut, als hätte ich ihn immer schon gekannt. Seine Warmherzigkeit und sein sanfter Humor ließen mich ihn sogleich in mein Herz schließen. Nichts Menschliches ist ihm fremd, seine Toleranz macht nur Halt vor Infamie und Niedertracht. Maigrets väterliche Güte lässt ihn zum Beispiel einem sich zu Unrecht selbst des Mordes bezichtigenden jungen Mann liebevoll übers Haar fahren (“Maigret und der Kopflose”), ein von ihm festgenommener jugendlicher Dieb darf vor dem Verhör zunächst erst einmal etwas essen (“Maigret als möblierter Herr”) und ein völlig verzweifelter Neunzehnjähriger, den Maigret soeben von einem Mord abgehalten hat, wird von ihm sanft ermahnt, sich die Haare zu kämmen, da er ihn anschließend zum Essen einladen möchte (“Maigret und sein Revolver”). Er ist sogar bereit, ihm bisher völlig fremden Menschen finanziell auszuhelfen wie etwa der jungen Tänzerin Nina Moinard in “Maigret und der Schatten am Fenster” und Francois Lagrange in “Maigret und sein Revolver”. Wenn Kommissar Maigret seine gewohnte Ruhe einmal verliert und aufbraust, so ist es stets dem Ernst der jeweiligen Situation geschuldet, zum Beispiel wenn er es mit einem besonders widerwärtigen Kriminalfall zu tun bekommt wie mit den Verbrechen der “Metzger der Picardie” in “Maigret und sein Toter” oder wenn man ihm ganz offensichtlich die Wahrheit vorenthält. So wird er in “Maigret und die alte Dame” gegen einen der am Verbrechen Beteiligten ebenso massiv handgreiflich wie er beispielsweise in “Maigret und die Gangster” sowie in “Maigret vor dem Schwurgericht” kriminelle Elemente mit physischem Nachdruck und Verbalinjurien zu einer Aussage bewegt.

Ein Musette-Walzer, dessen höchst eingängige Melodie zugleich beschwingt und dennoch melancholisch klingt. Ein Mann, der ein Streichholz an einer Wand anreißt und mit einem wissenden Lächeln seine Pfeife entzündet. Rupert Davies als Kommissar Maigret: ein Mann von imposanter Statur, dessen Auftreten geprägt ist von gelassener Autorität, jemand, der ganz und gar in sich selbst ruht. Von der Natur beschenkt mit einem Charakterkopf und einem offenen, sogleich Vertrauen erweckenden Gesicht mit ausdrucksvollen Augen, die tiefe Mitmenschlichkeit und einen wachen Verstand offenbaren - all das zog mich sogleich in seinen Bann. Georges Simenon hat seine berühmte Schöpfung Jules Maigret auf unverwechselbare Weise beschrieben, wobei der Familienname sich in schöner Ironie von "maigre" (mager) ableitet. Vergleicht man Simenons Worte mit dem Gesicht von Rupert Davies, so ist die Ähnlichkeit in der Tat frappierend. Des öfteren schwelgt die Kamera geradezu in Großaufnahmen dieses Antlitzes, in dem Güte und Verschmitztheit, Härte und Sanftmut sich auf wunderbare Weise ergänzen.
Binnen kürzester Zeit war mir sein Kommissar Maigret vertraut, als hätte ich ihn immer schon gekannt. Seine Warmherzigkeit und sein sanfter Humor ließen mich ihn sogleich in mein Herz schließen. Nichts Menschliches ist ihm fremd, seine Toleranz macht nur Halt vor Infamie und Niedertracht. Maigrets väterliche Güte lässt ihn zum Beispiel einem sich zu Unrecht selbst des Mordes bezichtigenden jungen Mann liebevoll übers Haar fahren (“Maigret und der Kopflose”), ein von ihm festgenommener jugendlicher Dieb darf vor dem Verhör zunächst erst einmal etwas essen (“Maigret als möblierter Herr”) und ein völlig verzweifelter Neunzehnjähriger, den Maigret soeben von einem Mord abgehalten hat, wird von ihm sanft ermahnt, sich die Haare zu kämmen, da er ihn anschließend zum Essen einladen möchte (“Maigret und sein Revolver”). Er ist sogar bereit, ihm bisher völlig fremden Menschen finanziell auszuhelfen wie etwa der jungen Tänzerin Nina Moinard in “Maigret und der Schatten am Fenster” und Francois Lagrange in “Maigret und sein Revolver”. Wenn Kommissar Maigret seine gewohnte Ruhe einmal verliert und aufbraust, so ist es stets dem Ernst der jeweiligen Situation geschuldet, zum Beispiel wenn er es mit einem besonders widerwärtigen Kriminalfall zu tun bekommt wie mit den Verbrechen der “Metzger der Picardie” in “Maigret und sein Toter” oder wenn man ihm ganz offensichtlich die Wahrheit vorenthält. So wird er in “Maigret und die alte Dame” gegen einen der am Verbrechen Beteiligten ebenso massiv handgreiflich wie er beispielsweise in “Maigret und die Gangster” sowie in “Maigret vor dem Schwurgericht” kriminelle Elemente mit physischem Nachdruck und Verbalinjurien zu einer Aussage bewegt.
“Kommissar Maigret” ist ein Gesamtkunstwerk, zu dessen unvergänglichem Zauber viele Faktoren beitragen, doch wäre es undenkbar ohne die faszinierende Gestaltung der Titelrolle durch Rupert Davies.

This footage, which I shot (16fps) on 'high speed' 16mm Anscocolor (100ASA!) shows the first UK public demonstration in 1961 of colour tv from the BBC. Sitting in a special glass fronted studio, two massive Marconi BD 848 colour cameras, each with a zoom lens, shot a simple interview set. The pictorial results were viewed on 405-line colour monitors in a nearby viewing room. Elsewhere on demo was a '625 line tv' gold fish tank shot with a Pye Mk5 b/w camera. The sharp-eyed will spot several 1960s 'stars'. Actor Ewen Solon, interviewer, Nan Winton, child star Mandy Miller and journalist Peter Noble. Singer unknown. The footage is rather soft due to multiple low res transfers, but fortunately I still have the 100ft of original film. I was a teenager at the time and this
film was taken with my first movie camera (Keystone A7-with clockwork drive ) which had a fixed focus lens.
