Red Symons has 'significant' brain injury

The ABC presenter is recovering after he fell and hit his head, but ABC host Jon Faine says he is "as sharp as ever".

"He's working at coming back as soon as he can," he said on Thursday morning. "The bottom line is he's had a significant injury to his brain ... [but] he hasn't lost any function."

An ABC spokesman said Symons is expected to remain off air for some time so that he can focus on making a full recovery.

"A lot of people are wishing him well," he said.

Symons briefly lost consciousness while walking home from the supermarket on July 5. As a result, he hit his head on the pavement.

Fellow presenter Libbi Gorr has been hosting ABC Radio Melbourne's breakfast timeslot while the 68-year-old focuses on his health.
