Strong winds batter the South West as Perth prepares for wild weather

Winds of up to 98 kilometres per hour have been recorded at Busselton's iconic jetty as a cold front lashes the South West and the Capes.

The Bureau of Meteorology said gusts of up to 85 kilometres per hour hit Cape Leeuwin with winds of up to 74 kilometres per hour at Cape Naturaliste.

A severe weather warning has been issued for the region with Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Katanning, Manjimup, Margaret River, Mount Barker and surrounding areas urged to take action as severe weather bears down.

The warning said strong winds and rain is likely to cause damage to homes and make travel risky, with surf conditions likely to be dangerous into Friday.

The Bureau said conditions should begin to ease from the west early Friday morning, though thunderstorms are possible on Thursday evening throughout the warning area.
