Take notes from these celebrity clap-backs
From J.K Rowling to Chrissy Teigen, there is a thing or two we can learn from celebrities when it comes to clap-backs.
-
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling could compile a whole book of great clap-backs she has dissed people on social media with in the past year, particularly against President Trump and his supporters. So when controversial US political commentator Tomi Lahren sent out a Tweet in support of Trump's transgender military ban, while slandering Obama, Rowling was not going to have a bar of it. “Pres Trump dedicated to putting radical Muslims in graves whereas Pres Obama was dedicated to putting men in ladies room,” wrote Lahren. Rowling decided to Tweet back a correction. "Truly, whom amongst us can forget Trump ordering the killing of bin Laden? Or Obama bragging about barging in on naked beauty contestants?", she wrote along with sharing other people's Tweets against the ban. Photo: Twitter/J.K. Rowling -
It seems that Modern Family actress and body advocate Ariel Winter can't catch a break from haters who attempt to slam her fashion choices; most recently a pair of shorts.. But the 19-year-old is always quick to clap back with important words that we should all take note of. In a Notes app screenshot posted to Twitter, the actress sounded off against what appears to be body-shaming comments coming from social media and some press sites. And considering it is summer in US these comments are great to follow when it comes to us making fashion choices. She wrote, "Pretty annoyed about the focus on the fact that I wear shorts, and the commentary that I'm 'squeezing' into them or the idea that it's not okay for me to wear shorts. It's SUMMER. Get over it. It's hot, I'm obviously going to wear minimal clothes. I'm not going to suffer in a turtleneck to please anyone. I'm not a whore because I wear shorts and tank tops. I'm a normal girl. Also, I'm not 'squeezing' into anything. My shorts fit me and everything I'm doing is just fine. Please leave young women alone. We're just living our lives. It's really troubling that we even have to deal with this kind of stuff nowadays. Please stop criticizing everything everyone does!!!!! Rant Over." Photo: Instagram -

After years of subtle subtweets, songs thrown around and disses in interviews, Katy Perry finally confirmed her feud with Taylor Swift, declaring it "crazy." Following the release of her track Swish Swish, which has been referenced as a clapback against Swift and her squad, Perry told James Corden there is still a "situation". "I tried to talk to [Swift] about it, and she wouldn't speak to me," said Perry. "It was a full shutdown, and then she writes a song about me. And I'm like, 'OK cool, that's how you wanna deal with it?'. Karma. There is the law of cause and effect. You do something and there's gonna be a reaction... and trust me, daddy, there's gonna be a reaction. It's all about karma, right?" Perry finished off the discussion by saying it is important for women to stand together, "women together, not divided" and that she's "ready for that BS to be done." Hopefully they can work things would so there's no more bad blood. Photo: CBS -
Have you ever been the coworker or person that has had to pull all the weight in a project or at work? Well it's time to take a page out of Jessica Chastain's book, with the actress throwing the ultimate shade at Johnny Depp during an interview with BBC. During a promotional tour for Miss Sloane, the reporter asked whether the actress had specific techniques for remembering lines, after it was recently alleged that Depp often has his lines fed to him via an earpiece. Chastain offered a GIF-worthy eye roll and head shake before saying: “I guess my technique is working hard.” Chastain is known for speaking candidly about the struggles women and marginalised groups face in the industry, also telling a reporter during the promotion, "I am not interested in female characters that are objects." Lena Dunham has taken to Instagram to deliver some hard-hitting social commentary after US Weekly featured her picture with a headline '20 Slimdown Diet Tips Stars are Using' on their cover. In her caption the actress offered “20 slim down diet tips!” of her own. Beginning with tip number one, a nod to her long-term anxiety disorder, she then went on to speak about politics' current impact on women, finally writing that she is opposed to giving tips for magazines. She wrote on Instagram, "20 slimdown diet tips! 1. anxiety disorder * 2. resultant constant nausea 3. an election that reveals the true depths of American misogyny 4. constant sweaty dreams of dystopian future 5. abdominal adhesions pinning ovary below uterus * 6. baseless but still harrowing threats to physical safety online and through smail mail 7. watching institutions you love from Planned Parenthood to PBS be threatened by cartoon mustache-twirling villains 8. finally realizing superheroes aren't real (specifically the X-Factor, really thought they'd handle this) 9. marching your ass off 10. a quiet rage that replaces need for food with need for revenge 11. sleeping 19 hours a day 12. realizing that even the liberal media wants dem clicks no matter whut 13. worrying ceaselessly about the health and safety of women you know and women you don't 14. realizing who ya real friends are 15. having to switch from Uber to Lyft (lots of calories burned trying to understand a new app, then even more trying to understand if the conflict was resolved) 16. bladder spasms, urinary frequency and urgency * 17. having your phone number leaked and violent images texted to your phone by randos under names like VERYFATCHUCKYBOY@creepz.com 18. keeping your back arched against the wind 19. um, who the fuck cares? 20. I have no tips I give no tips I don't want to be on this cover cuz it's diametrically opposed to everything I've fought my whole career for and it's not a compliment to me because it's not an achievement thanx * Star indicates a pre-existing condition Photo: Instagram/Lena Dunham -
US Gymnast and Olympic Gold Medallist, Simone Biles had a strong message for a Dancing With the Stars judge who told her to tone down her focus. Her performances on the show with dance partner Sasha Farber has earned her a place in the semi-final, but according to the judge she looked inauthentic because of her expressions. "Smiling doesn’t win you gold medals,” she told Dancing with the Stars host Tom Bergeron after being criticised. We think Biles know a thing or two about what helps win a competition! After shaving her hair for a movie role, Cara Delevingne took to the Met Gala with an incredible silver design on her head. Some people were quick to criticise, but the star is not one to shy away from clap backs, taking to Instagram to say that beauty standards are exhausting. She captioned her posts, "Its exhausting to be told what beauty should look like. I am tired of society defining beauty for us. Strip away the clothes, Wipe Off the make up, cut off the hair. Remove all the material possessions. Who are we? How are we defining beauty? What do we see as beautiful? The more we embrace who we are as people and rely less on our physical attributes, the more empowered we become. Beauty shouldn't be so easily defined. It is limitless." Photo: Getty -
Chelsea Clinton was one of the honourees at the Variety's Power of Women New York luncheon, but that didn't stop host Vanessa Bayer from making a joke at the Clinton family's expense. In her opening monologue at the event, the Saturday Night Live comedian introduced the six women who would be honoured that afternoon. "And they all have one thing in common," Bayer said. "None of their mums are president." For most of her award acceptance speech Clinton it seemed as though Clinton let the remarks slip, talking about her family teaching her gratitude and persistence. Clinton closed with a line that touched on her mother's presidential run with grace. "Vanessa, we may be able to say in this room today that no one's mother is currently president," Clinton said, addressing Bayer. "But someday, someone's will be." Photo: Andy Kropa -
Warning: if you try to secretly photograph Aussie Naomi Watts, she may just snap back at you. While riding the subway in New York City (respect!), Watts noticed a fan taking her photograph. Instead of lashing out at the woman, Watts proved that sometimes a little humour is the perfect way to clap back. Photo: Getty -
"The beautiful Naomi Watts on the subway today," the fan wrote when she shared the picture on the left to her Instagram. Watts also posted a photo, of the woman taking the snap, with the caption, "Think you're pretty sneaky? #gotyou #snap #subwayscenes." We're all aboard the Naomi Watts hilarious burn train. Charmed actor Alyssa Milano has been vocally active when it comes to politics for a while now. After endorsing Bernie Sanders during the 2016 Democratic primary, Milano last year then jumped on board the Clinton campaign encouraging people to vote by offering rides to the voting booths. Her Twitter has also become a space for her opinions on politics and ideas, with the star posing a valid clap back and Melania Trump after her first official portrait was released. Photo: Getty -
Melania's choice of jewellery in the portrait has been the centre of criticism from many social media users and celebrities including Milano. The star tweeted, "You look beautiful but you could feed many of the impoverished in our country with your rings." Photo: AP -
Lena Dunham was not going to accept some light fashion-shaming from Perez Hilton. Previously the gossip blogger had posted a photo of Dunham on the red carpet and asked them to "fill in the blank." Most recently Hilton posted a photo of Dunham at this year's Human Rights gala with another dig at the way she dresses, “Nice to see her trying!” Dunham has given ace responses on her appearance recently. So it is no surprise that her clapback at Perez was golden. Photo: Instagram/Perez Hilton -
In response to Hilton's post, Dunham pointed out other things that she 'tries' at. “I try at a lot of things. Mostly I try at being a writer, director, actor, activist, friend, sibling, partner, godmother,” she wrote. “Fashion is fun but sometimes I’d rather not spend 3 hours and lots of cash I could give to charity or spend on books and food to get ready to go out. “There’s a lotta different ways to be a public figure and I think there’s room for us to occasionally show up in public like normal people do. When I look at that picture you subjected to “caption this” criticism, I see a day well-spent writing, reading, having tea with a friend. It’s unfortunate that the days you approve of most are the ones where I’m spending the least time on what really matters." Perez later shared the comment on his Instagram saying her comments were well-said. Keep the clapbacks coming Lena, we are all for them! Photo: Instagram/Perez Hilton -
Jessica Chastain is no stranger to supporting women's rights having marched on Washington with thousands of women in January as part of the Women's March. And now she's taking on Twitter trolls, with some men learning the hard way that mansplaining about the cost of women's health care won't go down well. Chastain originally sent out a tweet which included a link to a Huffington Post article about how President Donald Trump's healthcare plan, as is, which will eliminate universal maternity coverage. This would be a reversal of President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act specifically added to ensure that all insurance companies gave pregnant women health benefits for an equal cost to men. Photo: Noam Galai -
The reason for this Trumpcare switch, according to White House spokesman Sean Spicer, was to take down insurance costs for those who don't need prenatal care; which would be men and older people. Chastain had some strong views on this saying, "some men don't want to pay for women's health, but sorry, you wouldn't be here without us. Time to show honour & respect for your mothers guys." Male trolls were quick to 'refute' Chastain's remarks, but she perfectly put one troll in their place by saying, "please Steven, tell me more about what women want. I need your insight." According to another Twitter troll, the actress was undermining the work of 'real' feminists, to which she perfectly responded, "Thank you Mark for teaching me about feminism. Perhaps with your help, I too can become a 'real' feminist." If sarcasm was a flame, these men have definitely be burnt. Photo: Twitter/Jessica Chastain -
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow has been killing 2017, thanks to her intrepid reporting on the Trump administration and must-see exclusives, including this week revealing Trump's 2005 tax return. The openly-gay host has seen some of her best career ratings of late, but it was an unscripted clapback yesterday that has gone completely viral. At the end of an interview with Rep. Bill Pascrell about members of Congress attempting to force President Donald Trump to release his tax returns, Maddow thanked Pascrell for being on her show, to which he responded, “Thank you, sir,” before quickly correcting himself. Maddow perfectly responded with, "It’s all right, I answer to both." She then laughed and added, “It’s really quite convenient in unexpected places.” Photo: AP -
J. K. Rowling has been no stranger when it comes to calling out the Trump administration or others on ill behaviour and unconstitutional matters. After Trump's proposed Muslim ban Rowling quoted Vice President Mike Pence's tweet from 2015, "calls to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. are offensive and unconstitutional" and added in a biblical reference: "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?" Matthew 16:26 Photo: Charles Sykes -
Now Rowling has hit back at Trump's advisor Roger Stone who issued inexcusable and vile insults on a woman after she questioned his assertion that Obama should be "charged, convicted and jailed" over the (totally unsupported) claims that the former president ordered an illegal wiretap on Trump during the campaign. J.K Rowling came to the woman's defense, writing "This man is an advisor to the leader of the free world." Stone has now withdrawn his tweet, but hasn't backtracked off his negative tirade against women, attacking Ana Navarro, a Nicaraguan-born CNN and ABC contributor on Twitter about her weight and sex life. Photo: Twitter -
The Harry Potter author wasn't done. She later questioned the president on his continual attempt to distract from his administrations ongoing Russia debacle. Photo: Twitter -
What's an award show in 2017 without a Trump burn? At the BAFTAs, host Stephen Fry was there to deliver. During his opening monologue he jokingly referred to "the most overrated people on the planet" when addressing the audience. The camera then cut to show Meryl Streep laughing, making the connection to Donald Trump's infamous tweet about her pretty clear. A short while later, when Fry introduced Streep, he took it one step further. "Unquestionably, on one of the greatest actresses of all time — only a blithering idiot would think otherwise — Meryl Streep!" he said. So subtle, but undeniably effective. Photo: Getty -
After Donald Trump called out Nordstorn for no longer stocking his daughter Ivanka's clothing line, comedian Chelesa Handler hilariously clapped back. She posted this on Instagram along with the caption, "A Jew and a Gay went to pick a Muslim up from the airport, headed straight to Nordstrom, and then headed over to @whitehouse to give our thanks! @POTUS!" Photo: Instagram -
JK Rowling has proved it's possible to beat your enemies at their own game without ever having to wave a wand and utter the words avada kedavra. The author of Harry Potter tweeted out an article about her achievements, saying she wanted to find out who the writer was. But Piers Morgan, who seems to be dropping into everyone's business lately, couldn't resist taking the bait. He tweeted: "Priceless #humblebrag BS [bullshit]. Nobody plays the celebrity game more abusively or ruthlessly than you, Ms 'Intensely Private Billionaire.'" Fans broke down on Twitter in hysterics after noting it was in actual fact Morgan who wrote the excerpt about Rowling in 2010 and therefore insulted himself. Mischief managed. Photo: Andrew Montgomery -
It all started when she tweeted about Australian comedian Jim Jefferies' comments towards Morgan on HBO show Real Time, "Yes, watching Piers Morgan being told to f--- off on live TV is *exactly* as satisfying as I'd always imagined," to which he bizarrely implied he never read Harry Potter because he had a premonition that Rowling would send out these comments. Piers Morgan replied to this by saying she was "superior, dismissive and arrogant". He wrote: "The superior, dismissive arrogance of rabid Remain/Clinton supporters like @jk_rowling is, of course, precisely why both campaigns lost." She replied: "The fact-free, amoral, bigotry-apologism of celebrity toady Piers Morgan is, of course, why it's so delicious to see him told to f--- off." In solidarity with Rowling, UK Bookstore Big Green Bookshop has started tweeting every single word of Harry Potter to Morgan, adding to the insult. Photo: Twitter -
Mariah Carey used her video clip "I Don't" to throw not-so-subtle digs at James Packer, including allegedly burning the dress she was planning to wear down the aisle with the media mogul. -
Melissa McCarthy has opened the floodgates, with actors left, right and centre scrambling to volunteer to mock Trump's administration after the Ghostbusters star won the world over with her performance as gum-chewing, hissy-fit throwing White House press secretary Sean Spicer; all complete with a frump suit jacket. The icing on the cake? Trump reportedly hated that a woman played Spicer. Well played Melissa, well played. -
Empire actress Gabby Sidibe took to Twitter to address fat-shaming comments she received after a particularly raunchy sex-scene aired and pretty much shut the internet down. Photo: Twitter -
Emily Ratajkowski has taken inspiration from her dusty rose power suit she wore frow at Altuzarra's NYFW show to stamp out sexism. Known for her vocal activism on female issues and sexuality, the actress called out New York Times journalist Jacob Bernstein who called Melania Trump a "hooker" mid-conversation. Her tweets resulted in Bernstein offering an apology. Photo: Getty Images -
After Emily Ratajkowski called out the slut shaming of the First Lady, the New York Times and Bernstein have both issued an apology with the writer taking "ownership" of his mistake in a four-part series of tweets. The New York Times said in a comment,"At a party last night, a Times reporter who does not cover Washington or politics, referred to an unfounded rumour regarding Melania Trump," the newspaper said in a statement. "The comment was not intended to be public, but it was nonetheless completely inappropriate and should not have occurred. Editors have talked to the reporter in question about the lapse." Photo: Twitter -
By now the whole of Twitter knows the drill when it comes to Chrissy Teigen - you will need ice for your burn, especially if you are a mummy-shamer, have hit back at her about Trump or dare to mock North West's fashion. When a paparazzo recently said to her "if we evolved from monkeys, why is John Legend still around?" Teigen was quick to fire back on Twitter with, "I was very kind. Answered cooking questions, then he came with that. F---ing disgusting. Guess we'll find him when he puts the video out. That he edits the s--- out of since he didn't get clocked." She gracefully did not name the photographer but did point out he continues with anti-Semitic comments. Photo: Instagram -
Chrissy Teigen, who was an active supporter of Hillary Clinton on the campaign trail, has been quick to Tweet against Trump's administration. In a hilarious set of tweets about line-up at the inauguration, Teigen wrote, "But have fun with DJ Buttcrack spinning the hot shit and Lil Banana dropping bars at your inauguration." A Twitter troll then went to say that people "at least wouldn't be subjected to your no talent illiterate husband," to which Teigen gave a response that should be nominated for best comeback of the year, "John went to the same university as the Donald, silly billy," she wrote, referring to the University of Pennsylvania. "Only difference was John went at the young age of 16." Photo: Twitter -
Teigen's glorious comeback in the wake of the resignation of security adviser Michael Flynn. Photo: Twitter -
Games of Throne's actress Sophie Turner joined the Trump burns by reponding to someone who posted a photo of President Trump and the First Lady, under the caption: “Name a better duo. I’ll wait” by simply sharing a picture of a fork and a plug socket. She then went on to say, “Sorry I haven't been tweeting much guys. Here's a roundup 1. No to that orange guy 2. Yes to women's march. 3. Alternative facts is lol,”. Photo: Getty Images -
Captain America, aka Chris Evans, has hit out against racist trolls on Twitter so it come as no surprise that he would take on a KKK leader. He had this to say when white supremacist David Duke accused him of hating white women. Photo: Twitter -
Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll have been the centre of memes for years, with the internet claiming that "Nollsy was robbbed" of the Australian Idol title. After Noll was arrested outside Adelaide's crazy horse, Sebastian could not help add a little light to the situation on social media after defending the fellow singer. Photo: Instagram -
During their 2013 Golden Globes hosting duties, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler joked that Taylor Swift better “stay away from Michael J. Fox’s son”. Swift felt that burn keenly and later went into revenge mode, telling Vanity Fair (that Katie Couric once told her), “There is a special place in hell for women who don’t support other women.” But, in typical form, Fey and Poehler got the last word. A year later, after winning Best Actress in a TV Comedy for her role as Leslie Knope on Parks And Recreation, Poehler joined Fey on stage for a lot of lady love and one subtle diss: “There’s a special place in hell for you,” Fey said to Poehler, before giving her a congratulatory hug. Sorry Swift, this duo is bulletproof. Photo: Getty -
Singer Zendaya gave Twitter fat shamers the ultimate burn by signing up the target of their hate - a plus-sized woman - to her clothing label. But not before giving the trolls a solid telling off. Zendaya wrote, "Stumbling across this is stupid s---, she is fine as hell head to toe and guaranteed doesn't know you exist my man. As for her, slay on queen. Can we find her @....I'd love for her to be a @dayabyzendaya model." Photo: Vincent Sandoval -
Nicki Minaj ended her acceptance speech at the 2015 VMAs by thanking her pastor, then calling out awards host Miley Cyrus with this epic line: "And now, back to this b---- who had a lot to say about me the other day in the press: Miley, What's good?" Minaj was referring to Cyrus' remarks that Minaj could have used the snub of Anaconda for video of the year as an opportunity to talk out about racism in the industry, rather than make it about herself. Minaj, in a New York Times interview, fired back by saying, “The fact that you feel upset about me speaking on something that affects black women makes me feel like you have some big balls,” she said. “You’re in videos with black men, and you’re bringing out black women on your stages, but you don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important? Come on, you can’t want the good without the bad. "If you want to enjoy our culture and our lifestyle, bond with us, dance with us, have fun with us, twerk with us, rap with us, then you should also want to know what affects us, what is bothering us, what we feel is unfair to us," she continued. "You shouldn’t not want to know that.” Photo: Harrison Saragossi
