A1C may refer to:
Glycated hemoglobin (hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c, A1C, or Hb1c; sometimes also HbA1c or HGBA1C) is a form of hemoglobin that is measured primarily to identify the three month average plasma glucose concentration. The test is limited to a three month average because the lifespan of a red blood cell is three months. It is formed in a non-enzymatic glycation pathway by hemoglobin's exposure to plasma glucose. HbA1c is a measure of the beta-N-1-deoxy fructosyl component of hemoglobin. Normal levels of glucose produce a normal amount of glycated hemoglobin. As the average amount of plasma glucose increases, the fraction of glycated hemoglobin increases in a predictable way. This serves as a marker for average blood glucose levels over the previous 3 months before the measurement as this is the lifespan of red blood cells.
In diabetes mellitus, higher amounts of glycated hemoglobin, indicating poorer control of blood glucose levels, have been associated with cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, neuropathy, and retinopathy. Monitoring HbA1c in type 1 diabetic patients, for the purpose of assessing glycemic control and modifying therapy, may improve outcomes.
A blood test is a laboratory analysis performed on a blood sample that is usually extracted from a vein in the arm using a needle, or via fingerprick. Multiple tests for specific blood components (such as a glucose test or a cholesterol test) are often grouped together into one test panel called a blood panel or blood work. Blood tests are often used in health care to determine physiological and biochemical states, such as disease, mineral content, pharmaceutical drug effectiveness, and organ function. Typical clinical blood panels include a basic metabolic panel or a complete blood count. Blood tests are also used in drug tests to detect drug abuse. In some of the United States, a blood test is required before marriage; historically, this was previously true in more states.
On 30 October 2015, researchers at the VUMC Cancer Center Amsterdam reported developing a blood test that, from a single drop of blood, can diagnose cancer with a probability of 97%, and about 6-8% probability of a false diagnosis, in healthy patients.

Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) Blood Test: Hemoglobin A1C evaluates long-term blood sugar control. Serum glucose sometimes reacts with important proteins in the body rendering them nonfunctional. This process is called glycation. Hemoglobin A1C is a reflection of this detrimental reaction. Doctors often follow this blood test in diabetics to monitor disease progression and the effects of treatment. However, because glycation is one of the leading theories of aging, Life Extension® believes everyone should check their A1C level. This test does not require fasting. Take all prescription medications as prescribed ... but do not take your supplements the morning of the test. It's free and very enlightening. Dr. Berg answers the question: why do I have insulin resistance but normal A1C? This has to do with the time it takes higher level of insulin to effect blood sugars. At first it is subclinical, then clinic and then a disease. In some cases, it takes 10 years for insulin resistance to turn into diabetes. The best test to identify insulin resistance is a fasting insulin test, which is different than a fasting glucose test.
