Sagar (community development block) (Bengali: সাগর সমষ্টি উন্নয়ন ব্লক) is an administrative division in Kakdwip subdivision of South 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Sagar police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is at Rudranagar.

Geography

Dhablat, a constituent panchayat of Sagar block, is located at 21°38′09″N 88°07′26″E / 21.6357°N 88.1238°E / 21.6357; 88.1238.

Gangasagar, the pilgrim centre, is located at 21°38′04″N 88°04′48″E / 21.6345°N 88.0801°E / 21.6345; 88.0801.

Sagar community development block has an area of 504.00  km².

Sagar (Anglo-Saxon name)

Sagar is a name of Anglo-Saxon origin. It is a patronymic name, hence most if not all people of this surname descend from a man (or even a number of men) known as Sagar. The name most likely derives from the diphthongal Anglo-Saxon word ‘Sægar’, meaning ‘sea-spear’. Presumably it denotes a maritime warrior of the type that either commenced invasions of Britain in the fifth century or were invited as mercenaries in the political and military vacuum created with the final departure of Roman troops. Samta (pronounced: Bengali pronunciation: [ʃaːmt̪ aː]) is a village and a gram panchayat in the Howrah district of the Indian state of West Bengal, located near villages like Ghoraghata, Mellock, Nabasan and Asaria, on the banks of the Rupnarayan River. It is the second nearest village to Deulti station, after Mellock.

History

Samta's history dates back to centuries. During British Raj Samta was ruled by the Roys, who were the Zamindars of the village. The Roys were initially Banerjee, but were later given the title of Roy. The Zamindars were subordinate to the Bardhaman Raj Estate, who were in turn subordinate to the British Empire. A memorial in the remembrance of Ishan Chandra Roy, a member of the Roy family, existed in the village but now is underwater and only a part of it is visible, peeping from the pond's water surface. The Roys still live in Samta. Goddess Shitala is the family deity of the Roys and a temple dedicated to the goddess exists in on a hill in the village. A cluster of the Roy family still lives on that hill.
