In this video I'm looking at the EPEver Tracer A MPPT charge controller. I open the box, look inside the case and fire the charge controller up for some initial testing. I also look at what parameters you can change in the menu system.

This is a fairly new MPPT charge controller on the market. A new version in the tracer range from EPSolar who have branded it under the name EPEver. The integrated screen is unique within the tracer series, but the eTracer and iTracer controllers have one too.
It comes in 10 amp (1210A), 20 amp (2210A), 30 amp (3210A) and 40 amp (4210A) versions. All of them are slightly different physical sizes as well as being designed for larger currents. All of them allow your panel open voltage to be up to 100 volts - or more accurately 92 volts at 25 degrees centigrade.

I was half expecting this controller to be real MPPT - or at least have an inductor and do a modest amount of DC/DC conversion. But no, it's an out-and-out fake, a fraud, a con, a rip-off. It looks like a PWM controller though, so it's worth checking how well it works.

Boosting MPPT solar charge controllers are pretty rare. Normally it's beneficial to have your solar panel voltage higher than your battery voltage, but that can be difficult if you need a high voltage battery system.
This cheap MPPT solar charge controller boosts the solar panel voltage up to a higher battery voltage and is sold primarily to the eBike community.

Maximum power point tracking
Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is a technique that charge controllers use for wind turbines and photovoltaic (PV) solar systems to maximize power output. PV solar systems exist in several different configurations. The most basic version sends power from collector panels directly to the DC-AC inverter, and from there directly to the electrical grid. A second version, called a hybrid inverter, might split the power at the inverter, where a percentage of the power goes to the grid and the remainder goes to a battery bank. The third version is not connected at all to the grid but employs a dedicated PV inverter that features the MPPT. In this configuration, power flows directly to a battery bank. A variation on these configurations is that instead of only one single inverter, micro inverters are deployed, one for each PV panel. This allegedly increases PV solar efficiency by up to 20%. New MPPT equipped specialty inverters now exist that serve three functions: grid-connecting wind power as well as PV, and branching off power for battery charging .

My panels output a higher voltage than standard RV solar panels. For this reason I needed to install a quality MPPT controller to take advantage of the higher voltage. A PWM controller can also be used with higher voltage panels (20 volts and higher) as long as the voltage does not exceed the maximum input voltage of the controller. However, only a portion of the power from a high voltage solar array will pass through a PWM controller to your battery bank. So, if you have high voltage panels, an MPPT controller is recommended. SOLAR PANEL WIRING TIPS - SERIES VS PARALLEL If you have an MPPT charge controller and closely matched panels, then wiring them in series or parallel should yield the same result. If you have a PWM charge controller, it will be better to wire your solar panels in parallel keeping in mind you may need thicker cable. Finally, if you have mismatched panels, using an MPPT charge controller and wiring your panels in series will give you the best result. I was half expecting this controller to be real MPPT - or at least have an inductor and do a modest amount of DC/DC conversion. But no, it's an out-and-out fake, a fraud, a con, a rip-off. It looks like a PWM controller though, so it's worth checking how well it works.

In this video I'm looking at the EPEver Tracer A MPPT charge controller. I open the box, look inside the case and fire the charge controller up for some initial testing. I also look at what parameters you can change in the menu system.

This is a fairly new MPPT charge controller on the market. A new version in the tracer range from EPSolar who have branded it under the name EPEver. The integrated screen is unique within the tracer series, but the eTracer and iTracer controllers have one too.
It comes in 10 amp (1210A), 20 amp (2210A), 30 amp (3210A) and 40 amp (4210A) versions. All of them are slightly different physical sizes as well as being designed for larger currents. All of them allow your panel open voltage to be up to 100 volts - or more accurately 92 volts at 25 degrees centigrade.

MPPT charge controllers operate more efficiently than PWM controllers, can be used with higher voltage panels, and are able to convert unused voltage to higher amperage. My panels output a higher voltage than standard RV solar panels. For this reason I needed to install a quality MPPT controller to take advantage of the higher voltage.
A PWM controller can also be used with higher voltage panels (20 volts and higher) as long as the voltage does not exceed the maximum input voltage of the controller. However, only a portion of the power from a high voltage solar array will pass through a PWM controller to your battery bank. So, if you have high voltage panels, an MPPT controller is recommended.
SOLAR PANEL WIRING TIPS - SERIES VS PARALLEL
If you have an MPPT charge controller and closely matched panels, then wiring them in series or parallel should yield the same result.
If you have a PWM charge controller, it will be better to wire your solar panels in parallel keeping in mind you may need thicker cable.
Finally, if you have mismatched panels, using an MPPT charge controller and wiring your panels in series will give you the best result.

A common situation with DIY solar systems is that someone gets a 20V or 24V solar panel, and then needs to use it to charge a 12V battery bank. We demonstrate why an MPPT solar charge controller is needed to convert the voltage down and increase the current to maximize the power out of the solar panel. While a PWM solar charge controller could be used, you will lose at least half of the potential power, so MPPT is a much better solution.
