Sunnylands, the former Annenberg Estate, located in Rancho Mirage, California, is a 200-acre (0.81 km2) estate currently run by The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands, a not-for-profit organization and Annenberg family trust. The property was owned by Walter and Leonore Annenberg until 2009 and had been used as a winter retreat by the couple from 1966, when the house was completed. The property is "rich with historical significance," according to the city of Rancho Mirage, which declared Sunnylands an historic site in 1990. Located at Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope Drives, the property has been the vacation site of numerous celebrities and public officials. Sunnylands is to some extent regarded as the "Camp David of the West."
Construction on the Sunnylands estate began in 1963. Renowned interior designer and former screen actor William Haines and assistant Ted Graber were the interior designers on the project. University of Southern California professor A. Quincy Jones. designed the 25,000-square-foot midcentury modern house known for its pink roof. At one time, the house was the largest in Riverside County. The property includes the main house, guest quarters, three guest cottages, a private 9-hole golf course, and 11 man-made lakes. When the Annenbergs were in residence, the main house hosted a significant art collection acquired by the couple, with about 50 works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Andrew Wyeth, and Monet. Many of their paintings were donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art following Walter Annenberg's death in 2002. The house is hidden from public view; a pink-brick wall surrounds the estate, as do hundreds of eucalyptus and olive trees and a thick belt of Tamarisk trees.
Leonore Cohn Annenberg (February 20, 1918 – March 12, 2009), also known as Lee Annenberg, was an American businesswoman, government official, and philanthropist, noted for serving as Chief of Protocol of the United States from 1981 to 1982. Annenberg was married to Walter Annenberg, who was an Ambassador to the United Kingdom and newspaper publishing magnate. She also served as the chairman and president of the Annenberg Foundation from 2002 until 2009.
Born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles, she graduated from Stanford University. After her first two marriages ended in divorce, she married noted businessman Walter Annenberg, who was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom in 1969 under President Richard Nixon. In her role as the ambassador's wife, Leonore directed a major renovation of the ambassador's official residence. The Annenbergs contributed to Ronald Reagan's 1980 presidential campaign and upon his inauguration, Leonore was named Chief of Protocol, placing her in charge of advising the president, vice president, and Secretary of State on matters relating to diplomatic protocol.

Sunnylands Center & Gardens in Rancho Mirage, California is an extension of the 200-acre desert retreat of publisher, diplomat, and philanthropist Ambassador Walter Annenberg and his wife Leonore. In the mid-1960s, the Annenbergs hired Los Angeles-based architect A. Quincy Jones to create a Midcentury Modern residence in Rancho Mirage. In 2006, the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands commissioned The Office of James Burnett to design the Gardens for an interpretive center that tells the story of the Annenbergs and their commitment to serving their country, to philanthropy, to education, and to the arts. Sustainability figured prominently into planning and design of the project and the Center has achieved LEED Gold Certification. In addition to the selection of regionally-a...
In the mid-1960s, Walter and Leonore Annenberg hired Los Angeles-based architect A. Quincy Jones (1913-1979) to create a midcentury modern residence in Rancho Mirage. Jones, who for many years was dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California, was known both for designs that integrated houses into the landscape and for "statement roofs." His signature style is evident at Sunnylands, where he used overhangs to shield the interiors from the direct sun, plus walls of glass to allow the climate's brightness to fill the rooms. Leonore Annenberg's deep love of flowers and nature is reflected in the cactus and rose gardens that abut the house and terrace. Interior rooms flow into each other with the same open expansiveness as the surrounding landscape.
Oh my horticultural goodness, Sunnylands is a work of modern garden art. Entering in the long, curving driveway the garden impacts you right away but then you see the Sunnylands Visitor Center at the end of the drive. It is a sleek, contemporary building with windows from floor to ceiling done in the style of Mid-Century Modern architecture. It boasts a LEED gold rating and the 53,000 plants in this garden are all low water usage and adapted to arid environments. No roses here! I'll be taking you on a tour of the garden exactly as we saw it. Walter and Leonore Annenberg owned the 200 acre property (now managed by their foundation) and set 15 acres aside for the visitor center and gardens. Although there are roughly 53,000 individual plants in this garden, there are only 70 specie...

"In the garden..." is a series for A Gardener's Notebook (http://douglasewelch.com/agn/) highlighting what is happening in my garden, my friend's gardens and California gardens throughout the seasons. We were out in the Palm Springs area visiting family as we usually do over the Thanksgiving holiday. The first time we visited Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage, California, I concentrated on the overall picture of the gardens, with its geometric plantings of succulents. On this trip, I got up close and personal with the plants, exploring the small and subtle shapes and colors of the plants. Watch the photo montage from my first visit here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWVWwUu8sHk The grounds now feature this new visitor center and beautiful gardens which act as the gateway to the tour of the...
