Oceano, California

Oceano (/oʊʃiˈɑːnoʊ/ or /oʊsiˈɑːnoʊ/; Spanish: [oˈseano]) is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 7,286 at the 2010 census, up from 7,260 at the 2000 census. "Océano" (with accent) is the Spanish word for "ocean", but the toponymic name is written without it.

Geography

Oceano is located at 35°6′10″N 120°36′41″W / 35.10278°N 120.61139°W / 35.10278; -120.61139 (35.102680, -120.611471).

Oceano is part of the 5 Cities Metropolitan Area. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km²), of which, 1.5 square miles (3.9 km²) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.052 km²) of it (0.98%) is water.

Oceano's beach is the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, a 1,500 acres (6.1 km²) coastal sand dune. As the only state park in California where visitors may drive vehicles on the beach, tourists are attracted from all over the United States. Activities on this beach include riding the sand dunes on all-terrain-vehicles, swimming, clamming, camping, surfing, surf fishing, hiking, and bird watching.

Music hall

Music hall is a type of British theatrical entertainment that was popular from the early Victorian era circa 1850 and lasting until 1960. It involved a mixture of popular songs, comedy, speciality acts and variety entertainment. The term is derived from a type of theatre or venue in which such entertainment took place. British music hall was similar to American vaudeville, featuring rousing songs and comic acts, while in the United Kingdom the term "vaudeville"' referred to more working-class types of entertainment that would have been termed "burlesque" in America.

Originating in saloon bars within public houses during the 1830s, music hall entertainment became increasingly popular with audiences, so much so, that during the 1850s, the public houses were demolished and specialized music hall theatres developed in their place. These theatres were designed chiefly so people could consume food and alcohol and smoke tobacco in the auditorium while the entertainment took place. This differed somewhat from the conventional type of theatre, which until then seated the audience in stalls with a separate bar-room. Major music halls, were based around London and included Early music halls like the Canterbury Music Hall in Lambeth, Wilton's Music Hall in Tower Hamlets and The Middlesex, in Drury Lane, otherwise known as the Old Mo.

York, New York

York is a town in western Livingston County, New York, United States. The population was 3,397 at the 2010 census.

The Abbey of the Genesee in the town's hamlet of Piffard is locally famous due to the production of Monks' Bread.

History

In 1722, the Tuscarora moved north to join other Iroquoian natives, the League of the Iroquois, and settled near modern Piffard. The town was first settled by Europeans around 1800.

The town was formed in 1819 from parts of the towns of Leicester and Caledonia before the establishment of Livingston County. More territory was added from the town of Covington in 1823.

Salt was discovered in 1883 near modern Retsof, leading to the formation of the New York Rock Salt Company. Further discoveries were made subsequently by the Empire Salt Company.

Linwood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Sunshine Building

The Sunshine Building is a historic structure in downtown Albuquerque, in the U.S. state of New Mexico, at the intersection of Central Avenue and Second Street. The six-story building was designed by the El Paso firm of Trost & Trost and built in 1924, originally housing offices and a 920-seat movie theater. It is of reinforced concrete construction, with a facade of yellow brick.

The Sunshine Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and has been designated as a Historic Landmark by the city.

F. D. Fogg and Company, Jewelers, operated a fine jewelry store in the building from 1948 until the 1970s. The store's classic neon sign and pink marble facade were recognized downtown Albuquerque landmarks throughout that period.

The TV Show In Plain Sight filmed the exterior of this location, as the fictional office of the US Marshal's Witness Protection Service.

Sunshine Theater

The Sunshine Theater, which occupies a significant portion of the building, was Albuquerque's first movie palace. The first film shown there was Scaramouche, starring Ramón Novarro and accompanied by a special orchestra for the occasion. The theater stopped showing first-run movies in 1974 and closed completely in the 1980s, but has since been remodeled into a popular live music venue. The Sunshine Theater has hosted a number of notable acts such as The Strokes, Snoop Dogg, Deltron 3030, Stone Temple Pilots, The Smashing Pumpkins, Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather, Arctic Monkeys, Modest Mouse, Rancid, Coheed and Cambria, Awolnation, Cannibal Corpse, Ratatat, Social Distortion, Pennywise, Hollywood Undead, Deftones, and Deadmau5 among others. The Sunshine Theater's set up is an open floor, a large balcony, and a bar that seats a 21 and older audience, in all they accommodate about 1,000 people. The theater is the most popular venue in the Albuquerque metro area to accommodate smaller but still notable acts, many with five or more shows in one month.
