Ming (typefaces)
Ming or Song is a category of typefaces used to display Chinese characters, which are used in the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages. They are currently the most common style of type in print for Chinese and Japanese.
Name
The names Song (or Sung) and Ming correspond to the Song Dynasty when a distinctive printed style of regular script was developed, and the Ming Dynasty during which that style developed into the Ming typeface style. In Mainland China, the most common name is Song (the Mainland Chinese standardized Ming typeface in Microsoft Windows being named SimSun). In Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea, Ming is prevalent. In Hong Kong and Taiwan, “Song typeface” (宋體) has been used but “Ming typeface” (明體) has increased currency since the advent of desktop publishing. Some type foundries use "Song" to refer to this style of typeface that follows a standard such as the Standard Form of National Characters, and “Ming” to refer to typefaces that resemble forms found in the Kangxi dictionary.

Recorded during TypeCon2018: Xx in Portland, Oregon Chinese characters, with complex structures and time-honored aesthetic features, requires font designers to have years of training. The huge number of different Chinese characters has also long been a great obstacle to designers. For these two reasons, few people have been brave enough to delve into the design of Chinese fonts. As computer comes to our aid, the huge quantity of characters is no longer a problem and the creative industry in China has welcomed its historic opportunity. Thus, Chinese font design has thrived and embarked on a separate journey away from the path followed by Western peers. This is a point call for our attention.

In August 2013, we began a quest to create playing cards fit for display at the legendary Waldorf Astoria, the gathering place for royalty and the ultra-wealthy. For the past 14 years, Cohen has performed Chamber Magic there, in a private Waldorf Towers suite, for sold-out audiences including Warren Buffett, David Rockefeller, and the Queen of Morocco. In 2012, Cohen became the first magician in a half-century to sell out Carnegie Hall.

The history of Chinese writing is, in a nutshell, the history of Chinese calligraphy. From oracle bones to bronzeware scripts, to small seal script, to clerical script, to cursive script, and finally to regular script, the history of the Chinese calligraphy has been evolving for three thousand years has been evolving for three thousand years. In China, calligraphy eventually formed a self-sustaining art, occupying an immensely respected position. The cursive, semi-cursive, and regular script especially, have become the dominant Chinese bookhand in the past 1,000 years, profoundly influencing Chinese civilization and the tradition of Han culture.
The main purpose of this study is to explore and present how traditional Chinese calligraphy becomes an industrialized, standardized font and how all of these influences are associated with contemporary Chinese society and modern civilization.

Chinese characters, with complex structures and time-honored aesthetic features, requires font designers to have years of training. The huge number of different Chinese characters has also long been a great obstacle to designers. For these two reasons, few people have been brave enough to delve into the design of Chinese fonts. As computer comes to our aid, the huge quantity of characters is no longer a problem and the creative industry in China has welcomed its historic opportunity. Thus, Chinese font design has thrived and embarked on a separate journey away from the path followed by Western peers. This is a point call for our attention.

For the past 14 years, Cohen has performed Chamber Magic there, in a private Waldorf Towers suite, for sold-out audiences including Warren Buffett, David Rockefeller, and the Queen of Morocco.
