Mithali Raj & Co. are on the cusp of creating history. For the first time in 12 years, in front of a capacity crowd at the iconic Lord's and millions more watching back home, India have earned the ultimate shot at ending their big-moment hoodoo as they take on England in the finale of the ICC Women's World Cup 2017 on Sunday (July 23).
The script couldn't have unfolded better for Raj - who will become the first captain to lead India in two World Cup finals - and pace spearhead Jhulan Goswami. Playing their final game on cricket's biggest stage, the lone survivors from the 2005 title defeat to Australia can now bank on this resurgent team to right a few wrongs in the summit clash and bring home the coveted trophy that has remained elusive in their careers spanning over 15 years.
It was by stunning the pre-tournament favourites England, courtesy a Smriti Mandhana blinder, that India laid down the marker right at the start of their campaign, about a month ago. That threat might have withered a wee bit in the face of their shock loss to South Africa, followed by a drubbing at the hands of Australia. But when push came to shove, India outwitted the other 'favourites', knocking them out of contention on their way to setting up this Lord's date. In what boiled down to a virtual quarterfinal, Veda Krishnamurthy's onslaught in the death overs gave India a total challenging enough to choke New Zealand. When most ridiculed at their chance against the mighty Australians in the semifinal, Harmanpreet Kaur's stunning assault came as a timely reminder of India's power-hitting abilities, ending the six-time champions' campaign in the process, unexpectedly. An otherwise inconsistent pace attack too came good at the penultimate step. That combined with record-breaking Raj's consistency and an unfailing, multifarious spin attack has ensured that this Indian unit wouldn't be an easy meat for the opponents, unlike what may have been the case in the past.
While India are hitting their straps at the right time, England too have not looked back since the first game loss to the now finalists. The home side is on a seven-match winning spree and boast of an envious batting line-up. On their road to the finale, England have twice posted scores in excess of 370 that feature right up there amongst the all-time tallest scores in the tournament's history, offering a glimpse into the potential of their top-five, of which four are in the 300-run club. Twice when the top order oddly flunked - on a tricky surface against Australia and in an equally delicate chase in the semifinal against South Africa - the lower-middle order, packed with experienced all-rounders, bailed them out to put them on their way to their seventh final appearance, and possibly a fourth crown. Even if India have ripped apart their bowling previously, this adept side brings forward the confidence of batting the opponents out of the contest, which makes it anything but a straightforward clash.
England have never lost a World Cup staged at home, and India haven't won any at all. History, rivalry and crowd support though will count for little on the big day. With 29 runs to go and 33 balls and five wickets in hand, history beckoned the Indian women's cricket team. Already, comparisons were being drawn with the famous triumph of the men's team in 1983 at the same historic ground of Lord's. That win had not only changed Indian cricket but also catalysed a complete shift in the game's balance of power.
Surely a victory for India's women would have a similiar transformative effect? Could a women's IPL be far behind?
Unfortunately, England, and Anya Shrubsole in particular, had other ideas. Shrubsole ran through the Indian line-up, finishing with the best ever figures in a Women's World Cup final — 6 for 46 — and the player of the match award, as the inexperienced lower order imploded. Indian supporters were left heartbroken, musing forlornly on what might have been.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, skipper Mithali Raj said she was proud of the team. Her pride is certainly justified. A generation of Indian fans has suddenly become aware of women's cricket. The team may not have won the title, but they have won a million hearts, and that could make a huge difference to the future of the sport.
The final had begun in overcast conditions but that did not dampen the spirit of the Indian fans, draped in the tricolour, who danced and sang right from the outset.
Their optimism was driven by a mixture of pride in Indian women and hope that this would not just inspire a generation of female Indian cricket players, but also elevate the position of women in India.
'Women cricketers made millions of fans today'
Mahesh Patel, 37, a Gujarati builder from Harrow, who moved to the UK 20 years ago from Kenya, was having a drink in the Lord's Food Village.
"It's the second time India has come to a final so if they win it will be another country breaking the form and women's cricket will get promoted more in India," he said beaming with optimism.
His friend Amit Patel, 35, an estate agent from Harrow, said: "There are no equal opportunities in India. If they win, it will help all women In India and encourage women to play sport."
Then a crowd of British Indians from the Bharat Army into singing and dancing of Ganpati Bappa Morya to the beats of dhol drum dancing with flags draped around them.
Riya Bhambra, 14, from Hayes, whose family is of Punjabi origin, was one of them. Despite being born in the UK, she said she supported India. "Cricket is our national sport in India. It's where our parents are from. it's our roots."
Her father Danny Bhambra, 41, added " I don't think women's cricket has ever had a following like this before. It has always been dominated by men. If India wins, more investment will come in women's cricket. I wanted to show my daughter that women can make it in a men's sport."
With Indian flags painted on her hands, a British Gujarati Keeya Patel, aged 8, who lives in Surrey, said: "At school we just played rounders I always wanted to play cricket at but it was all boys so I have never played it."
Her father Hiren Patel, 40, a business development manager, said "The fact the women's team have played so well shows they are better than men."

The West Indies is a region of the Caribbean Basin and North Atlantic Ocean that includes the many islands and island nations of the Antilles and the Lucayan Archipelago.

Between 1958 and 1962, the United Kingdom reorganised all their West Indies island territories (except the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas) into the West Indies Federation. They hoped that the Federation would coalesce into a single, independent nation. However, the Federation had limited powers, numerous practical problems, and a lack of popular support; consequently, it was dissolved by the British in 1963, with nine provinces becoming independent sovereign states and four becoming British Overseas Territories.

'Women cricketers made millions of fans today' Mahesh Patel, 37, a Gujarati builder from Harrow, who moved to the UK 20 years ago from Kenya, was having a drink in the Lord's Food Village. "It's the second time India has come to a final so if they win it will be another country breaking the form and women's cricket will get promoted more in India," he said beaming with optimism. His friend Amit Patel, 35, an estate agent from Harrow, said: "There are no equal opportunities in India. If they win, it will help all women In India and encourage women to play sport." Then a crowd of British Indians from the Bharat Army into singing and dancing of Ganpati Bappa Morya to the beats of dhol drum dancing with flags draped around them. Riya Bhambra, 14, from Hayes, whose family is of Punjabi origin, was one of them. Despite being born in the UK, she said she supported India. "Cricket is our national sport in India. It's where our parents are from. it's our roots." Her father Danny Bhambra, 41, added " I don't think women's cricket has ever had a following like this before. It has always been dominated by men. If India wins, more investment will come in women's cricket. I wanted to show my daughter that women can make it in a men's sport." With Indian flags painted on her hands, a British Gujarati Keeya Patel, aged 8, who lives in Surrey, said: "At school we just played rounders I always wanted to play cricket at but it was all boys so I have never played it." But when push came to shove, India outwitted the other 'favourites', knocking them out of contention on their way to setting up this Lord's date. In what boiled down to a virtual quarterfinal, Veda Krishnamurthy's onslaught in the death overs gave India a total challenging enough to choke New Zealand. When most ridiculed at their chance against the mighty Australians in the semifinal, Harmanpreet Kaur's stunning assault came as a timely reminder of India's power-hitting abilities, ending the six-time champions' campaign in the process, unexpectedly. An otherwise inconsistent pace attack too came good at the penultimate step. That combined with record-breaking Raj's consistency and an unfailing, multifarious spin attack has ensured that this Indian unit wouldn't be an easy meat for the opponents, unlike what may have been the case in the past.
While India are hitting their straps at the right time, England too have not looked back since the first game loss to the now finalists. The home side is on a seven-match winning spree and boast of an envious batting line-up. On their road to the finale, England have twice posted scores in excess of 370 that feature right up there amongst the all-time tallest scores in the tournament's history, offering a glimpse into the potential of their top-five, of which four are in the 300-run club. Twice when the top order oddly flunked - on a tricky surface against Australia and in an equally delicate chase in the semifinal against South Africa - the lower-middle order, packed with experienced all-rounders, bailed them out to put them on their way to their seventh final appearance, and possibly a fourth crown. Even if India have ripped apart their bowling previously, this adept side brings forward the confidence of batting the opponents out of the contest, which makes it anything but a straightforward clash.
England have never lost a World Cup staged at home, and India haven't won any at all. History, rivalry and crowd support though will count for little on the big day. The event is organised by the sport's governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), every four years, with preliminary qualification rounds leading up to a finals tournament. ►The first World Cup was organised in England in June 1975, with the first ODI cricket match having been played only four years earlier. However, a separate Women's Cricket World Cup had been held two years before the first men's tournament, and a tournament involving multiple international teams had been held as early as 1912, when a triangular tournament of Test matches was played between Australia, England and South Africa. The first three World Cups were held in England. From the 1987 tournament onwards, hosting has been shared between countries under an unofficial rotation system, with fourteen ICC members having hosted at least one match in the tournament.
►The finals of the World Cup are contested by the ten full members of the ICC (all of which are Test-playing teams) and a number of teams made up from associate and affiliate members of the ICC, selected via the World Cricket League and a later qualifying tournament. A total of twenty teams have competed in the eleven editions of the tournament, with fourteen competing in the 2015 tournament. Australia has won the tournament five times, with the West Indies, India (twice each), Pakistan and Sri Lanka (once each) also having won the tournament. The best performance by a non-full-member team came when Kenya made
the semi-finals of the 2003 tournament.

With 29 runs to go and 33 balls and five wickets in hand, history beckoned the Indian women's cricket team. Already, comparisons were being drawn with the famous triumph of the men's team in 1983 at the same historic ground of Lord's. That win had not only changed Indian cricket but also catalysed a complete shift in the game's balance of power.
Surely a victory for India's women would have a similiar transformative effect? Could a women's IPL be far behind?
Unfortunately, England, and Anya Shrubsole in particular, had other ideas. Shrubsole ran through the Indian line-up, finishing with the best ever figures in a Women's World Cup final — 6 for 46 — and the player of the match award, as the inexperienced lower order imploded. Indian supporters were left heartbroken, musing forlornly on what might have been.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, skipper Mithali Raj said she was proud of the team. Her pride is certainly justified. A generation of Indian fans has suddenly become aware of women's cricket. The team may not have won the title, but they have won a million hearts, and that could make a huge difference to the future of the sport.
The final had begun in overcast conditions but that did not dampen the spirit of the Indian fans, draped in the tricolour, who danced and sang right from the outset.
Their optimism was driven by a mixture of pride in Indian women and hope that this would not just inspire a generation of female Indian cricket players, but also elevate the position of women in India.
'Women cricketers made millions of fans today'
Mahesh Patel, 37, a Gujarati builder from Harrow, who moved to the UK 20 years ago from Kenya, was having a drink in the Lord's Food Village.
"It's the second time India has come to a final so if they win it will be another country breaking the form and women's cricket will get promoted more in India," he said beaming with optimism.
His friend Amit Patel, 35, an estate agent from Harrow, said: "There are no equal opportunities in India. If they win, it will help all women In India and encourage women to play sport."
Then a crowd of British Indians from the Bharat Army into singing and dancing of Ganpati Bappa Morya to the beats of dhol drum dancing with flags draped around them.
Riya Bhambra, 14, from Hayes, whose family is of Punjabi origin, was one of them. Despite being born in the UK, she said she supported India. "Cricket is our national sport in India. It's where our parents are from. it's our roots."
Her father Danny Bhambra, 41, added " I don't think women's cricket has ever had a following like this before. It has always been dominated by men. If India wins, more investment will come in women's cricket. I wanted to show my daughter that women can make it in a men's sport."
With Indian flags painted on her hands, a British Gujarati Keeya Patel, aged 8, who lives in Surrey, said: "At school we just played rounders I always wanted to play cricket at but it was all boys so I have never played it."
Her father Hiren Patel, 40, a business development manager, said "The fact the women's team have played so well shows they are better than men."

Playing their final game on cricket's biggest stage, the lone survivors from the 2005 title defeat to Australia can now bank on this resurgent team to right a few wrongs in the summit clash and bring home the coveted trophy that has remained elusive in their careers spanning over 15 years.
It was by stunning the pre-tournament favourites England, courtesy a Smriti Mandhana blinder, that India laid down the marker right at the start of their campaign, about a month ago. That threat might have withered a wee bit in the face of their shock loss to South Africa, followed by a drubbing at the hands of Australia. But when push came to shove, India outwitted the other 'favourites', knocking them out of contention on their way to setting up this Lord's date. In what boiled down to a virtual quarterfinal, Veda Krishnamurthy's onslaught in the death overs gave India a total challenging enough to choke New Zealand. When most ridiculed at their chance against the mighty Australians in the semifinal, Harmanpreet Kaur's stunning assault came as a timely reminder of India's power-hitting abilities, ending the six-time champions' campaign in the process, unexpectedly. An otherwise inconsistent pace attack too came good at the penultimate step. That combined with record-breaking Raj's consistency and an unfailing, multifarious spin attack has ensured that this Indian unit wouldn't be an easy meat for the opponents, unlike what may have been the case in the past.
While India are hitting their straps at the right time, England too have not looked back since the first game loss to the now finalists. The home side is on a seven-match winning spree and boast of an envious batting line-up. On their road to the finale, England have twice posted scores in excess of 370 that feature right up there amongst the all-time tallest scores in the tournament's history, offering a glimpse into the potential of their top-five, of which four are in the 300-run club. Twice when the top order oddly flunked - on a tricky surface against Australia and in an equally delicate chase in the semifinal against South Africa - the lower-middle order, packed with experienced all-rounders, bailed them out to put them on their way to their seventh final appearance, and possibly a fourth crown. Even if India have ripped apart their bowling previously, this adept side brings forward the confidence of batting the opponents out of the contest, which makes it anything but a straightforward clash.
England have never lost a World Cup staged at home, and India haven't won any at all. History, rivalry and crowd support though will count for little on the big day. Interestingly, the edition comes to full circle on Sunday, and once again, the bunch that can hold their nerve better will go on a victory lap in front of an unprecedented audience in women's cricket history. Sure, no pressure then.

Mithali Raj & Co. are on the cusp of creating history. For the first time in 12 years, in front of a capacity crowd at the iconic Lord's and millions more watching back home, India have earned the ultimate shot at ending their big-moment hoodoo as they take on England in the finale of the ICC Women's World Cup 2017 on Sunday (July 23).
The script couldn't have unfolded better for Raj - who will become the first captain to lead India in two World Cup finals - and pace spearhead Jhulan Goswami. Playing their final game on cricket's biggest stage, the lone survivors from the 2005 title defeat to Australia can now bank on this resurgent team to right a few wrongs in the summit clash and bring home the coveted trophy that has remained elusive in their careers spanning over 15 years.
It was by stunning the pre-tournament favourites England, courtesy a Smriti Mandhana blinder, that India laid down the marker right at the start of their campaign, about a month ago. That threat might have withered a wee bit in the face of their shock loss to South Africa, followed by a drubbing at the hands of Australia. But when push came to shove, India outwitted the other 'favourites', knocking them out of contention on their way to setting up this Lord's date. In what boiled down to a virtual quarterfinal, Veda Krishnamurthy's onslaught in the death overs gave India a total challenging enough to choke New Zealand. When most ridiculed at their chance against the mighty Australians in the semifinal, Harmanpreet Kaur's stunning assault came as a timely reminder of India's power-hitting abilities, ending the six-time champions' campaign in the process, unexpectedly. An otherwise inconsistent pace attack too came good at the penultimate step. That combined with record-breaking Raj's consistency and an unfailing, multifarious spin attack has ensured that this Indian unit wouldn't be an easy meat for the opponents, unlike what may have been the case in the past.
While India are hitting their straps at the right time, England too have not looked back since the first game loss to the now finalists. The home side is on a seven-match winning spree and boast of an envious batting line-up. On their road to the finale, England have twice posted scores in excess of 370 that feature right up there amongst the all-time tallest scores in the tournament's history, offering a glimpse into the potential of their top-five, of which four are in the 300-run club. Twice when the top order oddly flunked - on a tricky surface against Australia and in an equally delicate chase in the semifinal against South Africa - the lower-middle order, packed with experienced all-rounders, bailed them out to put them on their way to their seventh final appearance, and possibly a fourth crown. Even if India have ripped apart their bowling previously, this adept side brings forward the confidence of batting the opponents out of the contest, which makes it anything but a straightforward clash.
England have never lost a World Cup staged at home, and India haven't won any at all. History, rivalry and crowd support though will count for little on the big day. Interestingly, the edition comes to full circle on Sunday, and once again, the bunch that can hold their nerve better will go on a victory lap in front of an unprecedented audience in women's cricket history. Sure, no pressure then.

With 29 runs to go and 33 balls and five wickets in hand, history beckoned the Indian women's cricket team. Already, comparisons were being drawn with the famous triumph of the men's team in 1983 at the same historic ground of Lord's. That win had not only changed Indian cricket but also catalysed a complete shift in the game's balance of power.
Surely a victory for India's women would have a similiar transformative effect? Could a women's IPL be far behind?
Unfortunately, England, and Anya Shrubsole in particular, had other ideas. Shrubsole ran through the Indian line-up, finishing with the best ever figures in a Women's World Cup final — 6 for 46 — and the player of the match award, as the inexperienced lower order imploded. Indian supporters were left heartbroken, musing forlornly on what might have been.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, skipper Mithali Raj said she was proud of the team. Her pride is certainly justified. A generation of Indian fans has suddenly become aware of women's cricket. The team may not have won the title, but they have won a million hearts, and that could make a huge difference to the future of the sport.
The final had begun in overcast conditions but that did not dampen the spirit of the Indian fans, draped in the tricolour, who danced and sang right from the outset.
Their optimism was driven by a mixture of pride in Indian women and hope that this would not just inspire a generation of female Indian cricket players, but also elevate the position of women in India.
'Women cricketers made millions of fans today'
Mahesh Patel, 37, a Gujarati builder from Harrow, who moved to the UK 20 years ago from Kenya, was having a drink in the Lord's Food Village.
"It's the second time India has come to a final so if they win it will be another country breaking the form and women's cricket will get promoted more in India," he said beaming with optimism.
His friend Amit Patel, 35, an estate agent from Harrow, said: "There are no equal opportunities in India. If they win, it will help all women In India and encourage women to play sport."
Then a crowd of British Indians from the Bharat Army into singing and dancing of Ganpati Bappa Morya to the beats of dhol drum dancing with flags draped around them.
Riya Bhambra, 14, from Hayes, whose family is of Punjabi origin, was one of them. Despite being born in the UK, she said she supported India. "Cricket is our national sport in India. It's where our parents are from. it's our roots."
Her father Danny Bhambra, 41, added " I don't think women's cricket has ever had a following like this before. It has always been dominated by men. If India wins, more investment will come in women's cricket. I wanted to show my daughter that women can make it in a men's sport."
With Indian flags painted on her hands, a British Gujarati Keeya Patel, aged 8, who lives in Surrey, said: "At school we just played rounders I always wanted to play cricket at but it was all boys so I have never played it."
Her father Hiren Patel, 40, a business development manager, said "The fact the women's team have played so well shows they are better than men."
