Ritsurin Garden (栗林公園, Ritsurin Kōen, lit. chestnut grove garden) is one of the most famous historical gardens in Japan. The garden is situated in the city of Takamatsu and is considered one of its main attractions. The garden contains a tea house, various folk art and craft exhibits (including the Sanuki Folk Craft Museum), as well as various folk art and craft items for sale.
A tour through the garden generally takes one to two hours. There are various bridges, footpaths and small hills which offer a beautiful view of the garden and the surrounding scenery, most notably Mt. Shiun (紫雲山, Shiun-zan) at the western border of the garden.
The buildings in the Garden date back to the early 17th century. In 1625, the feudal lord of Takamatsu in Sanuki Province, Ikoma Takatoshi (生駒高俊), began construction of Ritsurin, specifically the building of a garden around the South Pond using the beautiful greenery of Mt. Shiun (Purple Cloud Mountain) as a backdrop. Beginning in 1642, Matsudaira Yorishige (松平頼重) took over the area and continued its construction. The work was completed by the Fifth Lord Yoritaka in 1745 after 100 years of improvements and extensions made by the successive lords. After the new Meiji government requisitioned the garden, it was designated a prefectural garden and opened to the public on 16 March 1875. In 1953, the garden was designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty (日本の特別名勝, Nihon no Tokubetsu Meishō).
On the second day of our trip we explored Takamatsu City, the capital of Kagawa Prefecture. The biggest attraction of the city is Ritsurin Koen, one of Japan's most beautiful gardens. It was founded during Edo Period by the feudal lord Ikoma Takatoshi. After a stroll in a garden we took a break at park's restaurant to cool with Zaru udon.

This park got three stars from Michelin Guide in 2009 as a worth visiting place. The large park features many ponds, hills, historic trees and beautiful pavilions divided into a Japanese style garden in the south and western style garden in the north. Trip to Japan's 4th largest island, Shikoku. Includes stops at Himeji Castle, train trip on the Marine Liner from Okayama to Takamatsu, Ritsurin Garden, Yakuri Temple, and traveling by car up the Iya Valley, which is known for being one of the last few vestiges of old world Japan with its dramatic mountain valleys, thatched roof farmhouses and historic vine bridges. We spent one night at Chiiori, a 300 year-old farmhouse (restored with modern conveniences) located high up in the mountains of Iya Valley.

However, Japan too was a nation of castle-builders. In its feudal days, you could find multiple castles in nearly every prefecture. Original Castles Because of bombings in WWII, fires, edicts to tear down castles, etc. only twelve of Japan's castles are considered to be originals, which have donjons that date bac...

This is part of a series of 1080p High Definition videos I shot while vacationing in Japan. I wanted to capture a sense of the real sights and sounds of Japan. There are so many beautiful places to go in Japan, just schedule your flight and take a journey to visit Japan and see for yourself. These videos will give you a small tour of what you can expect to see when you go to Japan, the sites, sounds and the people. This can be your video travel guide to Japan in the south. Tokyo is more crowded and hectic. This clip is of Ritsurin Japanese Garden on Kagawa island in Takamatsu Japan. It's one of the most beautiful and oldest gardens in Japan. I shot this with my canon 7d and the opteka steadicam and 10-22mm canon wide angle lens.
