Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺), officially Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera (音羽山清水寺) is an independent Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. The temple is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji and Otsu Cities) UNESCO World Heritage site. It should not be confused with Kiyomizu-dera in Yasugi, Shimane, which is part of the 33-temple route of the Chūgoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage through western Japan.
Kiyomizu-dera was founded in the early Heian period. The temple was founded in 778, and its present buildings were constructed in 1633, ordered by the Tokugawa Iemitsu. There is not a single nail used in the entire structure. It takes its name from the waterfall within the complex, which runs off the nearby hills. Kiyomizu means clear water, or pure water.
It was originally affiliated with the old and influential Hossō sect dating from Nara times. However, in 1965 it severed that affiliation, and its present custodians call themselves members of the "Kitahossō" sect.
The main hall has a large veranda, supported by tall pillars, that juts out over the hillside and offers impressive views of the city. Large verandas and main halls were constructed at many popular sites during the Edo period to accommodate large numbers of pilgrims.
Kyoto (京都市, Kyōto-shi, pronounced [kʲjoːꜜto.ɕi]; UK /kɪˈoʊtoʊ/, US /kiˈoʊ-/, or /ˈkjoʊ-/) is a city located in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. Formerly the Imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture located in the Kansai region, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. Kyoto is also known as the thousand-year capital.
In Japanese, the city has been called Kyō (京), Miyako (都), or Kyō no Miyako (京の都). In the 11th century, the city was renamed Kyoto ("capital city"), after the Chinese word for capital city, jingdu (京都). After the city of Edo was renamed Tokyo (meaning "Eastern Capital") in 1868, and the seat of the Emperor was transferred there, Kyoto was known for a short time as Saikyō (西京, meaning "Western Capital").
Obsolete spellings for the city's name include Kioto and Meaco. Another term commonly used to refer to the city in the pre-modern period was Keishi (京師), meaning "metropolis" or "capital".

Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) or "Kiyomizu Temple" is located on the side of the Higashiyama Mountains in eastern Kyoto City. Kiyomizudera is a very famous temple, not only in Kyoto city but throughout Japan. This temple is known for it's large hanging platform from a mountain edge. Hence the expression "take the plunge at Kiyomizudera" that this temple is famously known for. It does not mean that people should be jumping off the temple's platform but it urges people to follow their dreams and goals. This temple is close to the city center and is very popular with tourists both foreign and Japanese. Enjoy.
A morning visit to the most visited attraction in Kyoto: Kiyomizu-dera Temple. It is an independent Buddhist temple and is famous for its wooden verandas. Many of the iconic postcard camera shots from Kyoto are taken from here. There is lots of nice scenery and gardens nearby. Regardless of the season - snow, cherry blossom, or autumn - it is always nice to stroll around Kiyomizu.
The Kiyomizu-dera Temple is located in easter Kyoto. If you’re coming directly from Kyoto station, the best way is to take the number 206 or 100 bus - then get off at either the Gojozaka or Kiyomizu-michi bus stops. If you’re coming from Osaka or north Kyoto, you could take the Keihan line to the Gion Shijo station. From there, take bus number 85 to Higashiyama Yasui, Kiyomizu-mich, or Gojozaka stations. ✩ TEMPLES, SHRINES & ALL SORTS OF FOOD ✩ Day 2, saw and ate so much I’m not even kidding. Visited the Ginkakuji (Silver Pavilion), Kiyomizudera, Yasaka Shrine; made a peaceful stroll down the Philosopher's Walk, frolicked in the Pontocho district, and made a tad too many trips to the convenience store. Kiyomizu-dera is the most popular temple in all of Kyoto, Japan. The main hall is the most spectacular single item here. It’s up on large wooden stilts and designated as a national treasure. Large verandas and main halls like this were constructed at many popular sites in the past to accommodate large numbers of pilgrims. And then we have the views looking out across from the main hall into downtown. Looking up towards the temple which is up on the hillside. An old tradition that held that if you could survive a 13 meter jump from the stage, your wish would be granted. Over 200 people jumped, most of them surviving, but that practice is now prohibited. You can also buy good luck charms and various kiosks here and omikugi which are the paper fortunes, and incense and various other t...
