Kamigamo Shrine (上賀茂神社, Kamigamo Jinja) is an important Shinto sanctuary on the banks of the Kamo River in north Kyoto, first founded in 678. Its formal name is the Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine (賀茂別雷神社, Kamo-wakeikazuchi jinja).
It is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan and is one of the seventeen Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which have been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The term Kamo-jinja in Japanese is a general reference to Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine, the traditionally linked Kamo shrines of Kyoto. The Kamo-jinja serve the function of protecting Kyoto from malign influences.
The jinja name identifies the Kamo family of kami or deities who are venerated. The name also refers to the ambit of shrine's nearby woods, which are vestiges of the primeval forest of Tadasu no Mori. In addition, the shrine name references the area's early inhabitants, the Kamo clan, many of whom continue to live near the shrine their ancestors traditionally served.

Performed at Kamigamo Shrine in October, Kasagake Archery is one of the three original styles of archery performed for the entertainment of shrine deities in Japan. The nature of the shooting at this event harkens back to the practice drills performed by archers in the days of Japan’s warring period, recreated today as part of a religious offering. This ritual is performed by participants from the Takeda-ryu school of mounted archery, which has a long and interesting history. As opposed to the more commonly performed yabusame ritual where the archers shoot only at one fixed target, the archers at this event take aim at five targets- three at shoulder-height and two closer to the ground to simulate more realistic military maneuvers on the battlefield. Scores and hits are announced after...
In the style of lavish poetry parties held during the Heian period, Kamigamo Shrine is host to the Kamo Kyokusui no En each year at 13:00 on the second Sunday in April. Based on a particular event from the shrine's history, hosted by Priest Shigeyasu in 1182, the Kamo Kyokusui no En is held in a winding stream garden in the shrine's southeast grounds, the vibrant spring moss and shrine hall decorated with crimson umbrellas and sprigs of flowers. These days, the event is presided over by the Saiō-dai, a woman representing unmarried imperial princesses who historically served as honorary shrine priestesses. Five poets, four from the Reizei-ke Shigure-tei Bunko organization and one selected by contest submission, arrange themselves along the stream and receive the poetry theme, 2016's bein...
The Kasagake Festival is an amazing mounted archery demonstration held every year at the Kamigamo Shrine, in Kyoto, Japan. This is one of the few events where you can see the ancient Samurai horseback archery skills in practice. The participants from the Japan Equestrian Archery Association; members of the Takeda School of Horseback Archery, wear traditional outfits from the Kamakura period. The difference between Kasagake and Yabusame is than in Kasagake the archers aim at small targets called ko-kasagake, located near ground level on both sides of the horse. Another peculiarity of this event is the participation of female archers. Archery in Japan is an ancient tradition that was practiced by the Samurai warriors during the feudal times. In the present, it is still performed in different ways; as a martial art in disciplines like Kyudo and Equestrian Archery (Kyuba-Jutsu) and within special ceremonies around the year in Shinto Shrines. On January 16, in the north side of Kyoto, in the Kamigamo Shrine, a ceremony called Musha Jinji (Mu means warrior/samurai and sha means shoot) is hold to sweep away the evil or the bad spirits and bring good fortune in the New Year. The event was conducted by the Ogasawara-Ryu, and ancient Archery school with more than 800 years of history. This school was established in the year 1187 and in the present still continues to teach and preserve the art of archery at it was practiced in...

However, visitors may be surprised by how much work they will have to do to see Kyoto's beautiful side. Most first impressions of the city will be of the urban sprawl of central Kyoto, around the ultra-modern glass-and-steel train station, which is itself an example of a city steeped in tradition colliding with the modern world. Nonetheless, the persistent visitor will soon discover Kyoto's hidden beauty in the temples and parks which ring the city center, and find that the city has much...

The Kamigamo and Shimogao Shrines (上鴨神社 下鴨神社), known as the Kamo Shrines are designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of ancient Kyoto. They are located in Kyoto City, Japan. While Kamigamo Shrine (known as upper shrine), is located further north of the Shimogamo Shrine (known as the lower shrine), both shrines are located around northeast of Kyoto City. Both Kamo shrines are founded by Kamo Clan of ancient Japan in the 8th century. Enshrined here are the god Kamotakatsunemino Mikoto and his daughter Tamayorihime-no Mikoto, who is said to have been impregnated by an arrow that floated down by the Kamo River, subsequently giving birth to Kamo-wakeikazuchi, the god who is enshrined at Kamigamo Shrine. Since the founding of Kyoto as the capital of Japan in 794, this shrine played an...
