Japan is scrambling fighter jets at a rate not seen since the height of the Cold War to ward off incursions from a newly assertive Russia and from China's aggressive exertion of sovereignty in the East China Sea.
Instances of fighters scrambled by Japan have jumped 16 percent in the past year, a Japan's Self Defence Force spokesman said at a press briefing on Wednesday, according to Reuters. Japanese fighters scrambled 944 times in the year ending March 31, the second-highest number since records began in 1958.
Both Russia and China's defense budgets have increased aggressively in recent years. Chinese defense spending rose 167 percent from 2005 to 2014. Russia's rose 97 percent over the same period, while Japan's decreased by 3.7 percent, according to the Stockholm International Peace Institute.
Japan is planning a slight increase in defense spending, with plans to buy more long-range patrol aircraft, cargo jets and helicopter carriers as well as V-22 Ospreys and F-35 stealth fighters.
Russian combat planes frequently stage incursions near Hokkaido and the disputed Kuril Islands, and also commonly fly around the Japanese mainland.
Chinese incursions have been focused on the East China Sea, near the disputed Senkaku islands, which China claims as the Diaoyu Islands. The past year has seen flights by Chinese military planes over Japanese airspace and into the western Pacific.

Four Chinese military aircraft have flown over Japan's Okinawa Islands and Miyako Island for the past three days in a row. In response, Japan also scrambled fighter jets on Sunday (October 27) for a third consecutive day.
It was reported that two Chinese early warning planes and two bombers were spotted over the area between Okinawa's mainland and Miyako Island on Sunday. The aircraft flew over the Pacific Ocean several hundred kilometres south of Okinawa before returning to the East China Sea.
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had reportedly approved the use of air force planes to shoot down unmanned Chinese aircraft in Japanese airspace.
According to Reuters, "Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also told his troops on Sunday that Japan would not tolerate the use of force to change the region's status quo, an expression used by Japanese politicians and security experts to refer to what they see as China's aggressive maritime expansion.
"Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, asked about Abe's comments, said Japanese leaders had been repeatedly making "provocative" remarks.
"This once again shows that Japanese politicians are deceiving themselves with their arrogance and guilty conscience," she told a daily news briefing.
"Ties between Asia's two largest economies deteriorated sharply after Japan bought three of the disputed East China Sea islets from a private owner in September 2012, sparking protests and boycotts of Japanese goods across China."

War Thunder is a World War II-inspired massively multiplayer online combat game developed by Gaijin Entertainment for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4 and Shield Android TV.

Japan Self-Defense Forces
The Japan Self-Defense Forces (自衛隊, Jieitai), or JSDF, occasionally referred to as JSF, JDF, or SDF, are the unified military forces of Japan that were established in 1954. In recent years they have been engaged in international peacekeeping operations. Recent tensions, particularly with North Korea, have reignited the debate over the status of the JSDF and its relation to Japanese society. New military guidelines, announced in December 2010, will direct the Jieitai away from its Cold War focus on the former Soviet Union to a focus on China, especially regarding the dispute over the Senkaku Islands.
History
Early development
Deprived of any military capability after 1945, Japan had only the U.S. occupation forces and a minor domestic police force on which to rely for security. Rising Cold War tensions in Europe and Asia, coupled with leftist-inspired strikes and demonstrations in Japan, prompted some conservative leaders to question the unilateral renunciation of all military capabilities. These sentiments were intensified in 1950 as occupation troops began to be moved to the Korean War (1950–53) theater. This left Japan virtually defenseless and vulnerable, and very much aware of the need to enter into a mutual defense relationship with the United States to guarantee the nation's external security. Encouraged by the American occupation authorities, the Japanese government in July 1950 authorized the establishment of a National Police Reserve, consisting of 75,000 men equipped with light infantry weapons.

Sea of Japan
The Sea of Japan is a marginal sea between the Japanese archipelago, Sakhalin, and the Asian mainland. The Japanese archipelago separates the sea from the Pacific Ocean. It is bordered by Japan, North Korea, Russia and South Korea. Like the Mediterranean Sea, it has almost no tides due to its nearly complete enclosure from the Pacific Ocean. This isolation also reflects in the fauna species and in the water salinity, which is lower than in the ocean. The sea has no large islands, bays or capes. Its water balance is mostly determined by the inflow and outflow through the straits connecting it to the neighboring seas and Pacific Ocean. Few rivers discharge into the sea and their total contribution to the water exchange is within 1%.
The seawater has an elevated concentration of dissolved oxygen that results in high biological productivity. Therefore, fishing is the dominant economic activity in the region. The intensity of shipments across the sea has been moderate owing to political issues, but it is steadily increasing as a result of the growth of East Asian economies.

Four Chinese military aircraft have flown over Japan's Okinawa Islands and Miyako Island for the past three days in a row. In response, Japan also scrambled fighter jets on Sunday (October 27) for a third consecutive day.
It was reported that two Chinese early warning planes and two bombers were spotted over the area between Okinawa's mainland and Miyako Island on Sunday. The aircraft flew over the Pacific Ocean several hundred kilometres south of Okinawa before returning to the East China Sea.
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had reportedly approved the use of air force planes to shoot down unmanned Chinese aircraft in Japanese airspace.
According to Reuters, "Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also told his troops on Sunday that Japan would not tolerate the use of force to change the region's status quo, an expression used by Japanese politicians and security experts to refer to what they see as China's aggressive maritime expansion.
"Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, asked about Abe's comments, said Japanese leaders had been repeatedly making "provocative" remarks.
"This once again shows that Japanese politicians are deceiving themselves with their arrogance and guilty conscience," she told a daily news briefing.
"Ties between Asia's two largest economies deteriorated sharply after Japan bought three of the disputed East China Sea islets from a private owner in September 2012, sparking protests and boycotts of Japanese goods across China."

Japanese fighters scrambled 944 times in the year ending March 31, the second-highest number since records began in 1958.
Both Russia and China's defense budgets have increased aggressively in recent years. Chinese defense spending rose 167 percent from 2005 to 2014. Russia's rose 97 percent over the same period, while Japan's decreased by 3.7 percent, according to the Stockholm International Peace Institute.
Japan is planning a slight increase in defense spending, with plans to buy more long-range patrol aircraft, cargo jets and helicopter carriers as well as V-22 Ospreys and F-35 stealth fighters.
Russian combat planes frequently stage incursions near Hokkaido and the disputed Kuril Islands, and also commonly fly around the Japanese mainland.
Chinese incursions have been focused on the East China Sea, near the disputed Senkaku islands, which China claims as the Diaoyu Islands. The past year has seen flights by Chinese military planes over Japanese airspace and into the western Pacific.

American Airlines Flight 587 was a regularly scheduled passenger flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City to Santo Domingo's Las Américas International Airport in the Dominican Republic. On November 12, 2001, the Airbus A300-600 flying the route crashed into the Belle Harbor neighborhood of Queens, a borough of New York City, shortly after takeoff. All 260 people on board the flight were killed, along with five people on the ground. It is the second-deadliest aviation incident involving an Airbus A300, after Iran Air Flight 655 and the second-deadliest aviation incident to occur on U.S. soil, after American Airlines Flight 191. To date, no single-airplane crash incident that was ruled accidental and not criminal since then has surpassed that death toll, though before 2001 there had been deadlier incidents of this type.
The location of the accident and the fact that it took place two months and one day after the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in Manhattan initially spawned fears of another terrorist attack. However, terrorism was officially ruled out as the cause by the National Transportation Safety Board, which instead attributed the disaster to the first officer's overuse of rudder controls in response to wake turbulence or jet wash from a Japan Airlines Boeing 747-400 that took off minutes before it. According to the NTSB, this aggressive use of the rudder controls by the co-pilot caused the vertical stabilizer to snap off the plane. The plane's two engines also separated from the aircraft before it hit the ground.
The A300-600 took off immediately after a Japan Airlines Boeing 747-400 on the same runway. It flew into the larger jet's wake, an area of turbulent air. The first officer attempted to stabilize the aircraft with alternating aggressive rudder inputs. The strength of the air flowing against the moving rudder stressed the aircraft's vertical stabilizer, and eventually snapped it off entirely, causing the aircraft to lose control and crash. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concluded that the enormous stress on the rudder was due to the first officer's "unnecessary and excessive" rudder inputs, and not the wake turbulence caused by the 747. The NTSB further stated "if the first officer had stopped making additional inputs, the aircraft would have stabilized". Contributing to these rudder pedal inputs were characteristics of the Airbus A300-600 sensitive rudder system design and elements of the American Airlines Advanced Aircraft Maneuvering Training Program.
The manner in which the vertical stabilizer separated concerned investigators. The vertical stabilizer is connected to the fuselage with six attaching points. Each point has two sets of attachment lugs, one made of composite material, another of aluminum, all connected by a titanium bolt; damage analysis showed that the bolts and aluminum lugs were intact, but not the composite lugs. This, coupled with two events earlier in the life of the aircraft, namely delamination in part of the vertical stabilizer prior to its delivery from Airbus's Toulouse factory, and an encounter with heavy turbulence in 1994, caused investigators to examine the use of composites. The possibility that the composite materials might not be as strong as previously supposed was a cause of concern because they are used in other areas of the plane, including the engine mounting and the wings. Tests carried out on the vertical stabilizers from the accident aircraft, and from another similar aircraft, found that the strength of the composite material had not been compromised, and the NTSB concluded that the material had failed because it had been stressed beyond its design limit, despite ten previous recorded incidents where A300 tail fins had been stressed beyond their design limitation in which none resulted in the separation of the vertical stabilizer in-flight.
The official NTSB report of October 26, 2004, stated that the cause of the crash was the overuse of the rudder to counter wake turbulence.
The crash was witnessed by hundreds of people, 349 of whom gave accounts of what they saw to the NTSB. About half (52%) reported a fire or explosion before the plane hit the ground. Others stated that they saw a wing detach from the aircraft, when in fact it was the vertical stabilizer. Some witnesses reported seeing one of the engines burst into flames and break off the plane, and others reported hearing a loud sound like a sonic boom.
After the crash, Floyd Bennett Field's empty hangars were used as a makeshift morgue for the identification of crash victims.

Some very nice surprises this day, without even realising it, this day was the first day Finnair operated their brand new A350 into Heathrow so when I found out that was due at around 17:45 I figured I'd wait and see it!
In the mean time though a great variety of other heavies, lots of variants of A380's and a unexpected arrival from the Royal Brunei Government Airbus A340!
