The University of Salamanca, which was founded in 1134, is the oldest university in Spain and the fourth oldest western university, but the first to be given its status by the Pope Alexander IV who gave universal validity to its degrees. With its 30,000 students, the university is, together with tourism, a primary source of income in Salamanca.

Travel Guide Spain /// Salamanca http://maartenkuijken.tumblr.com/ Whether floodlit by night or bathed in the light of sunset, there's something magical about Salamanca. This is a city of rare beauty, awash with golden sandstone overlaid with ochre-tinted Latin inscriptions, an extraordinary virtuosity of plateresque and Renaissance styles. The monumental highlights are many, with the exceptional Plaza Mayor (illuminated to stunning effect at night) an unforgettable highlight. But this is also Castile's liveliest city; home to a massive Spanish and international student population that throngs the streets at night and provides the city with so much youth and vitality. Salamanca is a city in northwestern Spain, the capital of the Province of Salamanca in the community of Castile and León. The Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque monuments in Salamanca's historic centre were added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 1988. The city lies by the Tormes river on a plateau and is considered to be one of the most spectacular Renaissance cities in Europe. The buildings are constructed of sandstone mined from the nearby Villamayor quarry, and, as the sun begins to set, they glow gold, orange and pink. It is this radiant quality of the stones that has given Salamanca the nickname La Dorada, the golden city. It is one of the most important university cities in Spain and supplies 16% of Spain's market for the teaching of the Spanish language. Sala...
Open for more info ✼ I have put together a video from my week in Salamanca, visiting my friends there. I met them in an Erasmus+ exchange that I was a part of fall 2014, and spring 2016. I made friends for life, and I had to visit them again. I took a train from Alicante, after two weeks on holidays with my family in Albir, directly to visit them. Me and my friend Jonas from Norway spent a week living with them, form the 11th of July to the 17th of July. I had an amazing time and we made some unforgettable memories. I will forever remember our good times and our friendship. I hope to see you again soon! Take a tour of Plaza Mayor of Salamanca in Spain -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. The city of Salamanca is home to one of the biggest plazas in Spain. The Plaza Mayor is a large, open, baroque space in the center of the city. A covered, arched walkway along the outside of the plaza provides shelter from the elements. However, the usually lovely weather in Salamanca makes the open plaza the place to be. From its completion in 1755 until the mid-1800s, Plaza Mayor was the scene of bullfights. The four-story sandstone buildings surrounding the plaza usually see more relaxed gatherings these days. The immense popularity of this plaza means that people are here until late at night.
Hobart Town, winter time grey buildings look like icebergs by the ocean
Summer time a cool south wind, keeps a mind from melting
Ships roll in through the entrance of the river,
Back in 1830 with a convict cargo to deliver
Fingerprints are in the sandstone, from a prisoner that remains unknown
Gypsies come from miles around, to sell sell their art to the town
On a Saturday, public forum marketplace
Everyone can have their say, all the people have their say
Salamanca in Hobart Town, bohemians and the gypsies are dancing
Hackysack and a joint's goin around
Social conscience, hear all the people sing
Oh - power to our people they sing
Oh - fight the good fight while you can
All the left wing, dreadlocks on the lawn but they don't sing
They're too serious, too many issues to be discussed
I hear you say, everything's gunna be OK, to fight the good fight
