The Cult are a British rock band formed in 1983. They gained a dedicated following in the UK in the mid-1980s as a post-punk/gothic rock band with singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary", before breaking mainstream in the US in the late 1980s as a hard rock band with singles such as "Love Removal Machine" and "Fire Woman". The band fuse a "heavy metal revivalist" sound with the "pseudo-mysticism ... of the Doors [and] the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin ... while adding touches of post-punk goth rock". Since their earliest form in Bradford during 1981, the band have had various line-ups; the longest-serving members are vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, the band's two songwriters.
After moving to London, the band released the album Love in 1985, which charted at No. 4 in the UK, and which included singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary" and "Rain". In the late 1980s, the band supplemented their post-punk sound with hard rock in their third album, Electric; the polish on this new sound was facilitated by Rick Rubin, who produced the record. Their fourth album, Sonic Temple, proceeded in a similar vein, and these two LPs enabled them to break into the North American market.
The rock classic, recorded at Olympic studios in Barnes and produced by Steve Brown. This was recorded and released as a stand-alone single but it was included on the band's next album, 'Love'. Though it spent months in the UK charts, and was one of the best selling tracks of the year, it actually never reached the top ten. It was the last release to feature the original Cult drummer Nigel Preston.

Narrated by Devendra Banhart. (Support Tim Maia on iTunes - http://bit.ly/PUzVgr) This is the story of Tim Maia, possibly the greatest (and craziest) soul singer you never heard of. Infamous in Brazil, Tim was a soul grenade that exploded in the 70s. He single handedly revolutionized Brazilian popular music and had the best time ever doing it. His story is one of humourous excess in every way imaginable and there’s something for all the family: drugs, women, money, guns and even a UFO cult thrown in. He REALLY lived the dream, always with a smile. This animated film has been created in a close collaboration between SuperHeroes Amsterdam, ShopAround and record label Luaka Bop, to celebrate Tim’s album launch and introduce the world to a soul superstar. After a decade of legal wrangling, L...

There is gravity to a good bit of bread—it carries a sort of sacramental heft that doesn’t fool around. The way the outside shatters like a mosaic as you take a carnal rip off the crust, or the way it springs forth like a cloud into your mouth, swirled with a slug of olive oil. Great bread tethers you to your mortal coil—to your teeth and tongue and bones and blood and the all the things and conversations going on around you. It keeps you from floating away into the zeitgeist and leaving nothing but status updates to show for it. Pair it with nice beer, friendly people and some amicable herbs and vegetables and you pretty much have another reason to live. This is why we have vaulted Sonoma’s Mike [the bejkr] Zakowski to the echelon of artisanal god. What can we say? He maketh good loaves,...
John Carpenter's cult classic THEY LIVE (1988) was certainly a movie for its moment. - from 2006 - source: www.article19.co.uk company: www.hofesh.co.uk 'Cult' is the second work we have featured from the Shechter stable of choreography. A quick browse of the archive reveals a solo piece called 'Untitled' by Barebones Dance Company a piece, like 'Cult' that demonstrates this dance makers ability to create superb movement and get the very best from his dancers. The press info tell us this much; "Cult is an explosive, electric piece that delivers physical, virtuoso dance, embraced by elegant stage compositions and an overall gripping atmosphere. This stylistic work presents a dark, ironic view of the powers that steer our society and ourselves. Values tumble over each other, leaving the 6 dancers with the naked truth of their existence - struggling for a purpose they do ...
The first major exhibition dedicated to Aestheticism highlights the spectacular work produced by the artists, designers and architects of the late 19th-century, including James McNeill Whistler, William Morris and Thomas Jeckyll. Lead curator Stephen Calloway and other experts lead us through 'A world of beauty, flamboyance and faint danger ...' via the work of Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Oscar Wilde. TRANSCRIPT: Stephen Calloway: The way in which the aesthetic movement emerged is really fascinating and complicated. You have to think back to the Great Exhibition in 1851 and a lot of people at that time felt that what was on show there was somehow ugly and meretricious. A lot of goods made by machinery. Artists somehow felt that beauty had got lost. The prime move...

Beyond Good and Evil is the seventh studio album by English rock band The Cult. Released in 2001, it marked their first new recording in six and a half years. However Beyond Good and Evil was not the comeback record the band had hoped for.Despite reaching No. 37 in the US, No. 22 in Canada, and No. 25 in Spain, sales quickly dropped, only selling roughly 500,000 copies worldwide. The first single "Rise", reached No. 41 in the US, and No. 2 on the mainstream rock charts, but Atlantic Records quickly pulled the song from radio playlists, and stopping all promotion of the record. This is one of my favorite albums from The Cult, and it has been criminally underrated,I'm guessing probably because of the problems with Atlantic records like said above.Anyway this is my first video.ENJOY this grea...

Tracing the group back to its roots in the 1970s, the film describes how its leader Aravindan Balakrishnan, a student of Indian origin, believed in an international communist revolution and created a tiny political sect that followed the teachings of China's Chairman Mao. The film features exclusive interviews with two of the women who escaped - Aish...

How do you make used coffee filters, old shopping bags, disposed drinking straws, discarded turkey inseminators and tin cans more flashy than trashy? You commission a talented group of artists and designers to create haute couture from the refuse. The Sonoma Community Center did just that and the event culminated in their first annual Trashion Show and Accessory exhibit. For this video, we followed the process of some of the resourceful artists from concept to runway. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Cult Sonoma http://www.cultsonoma.com Sonoma Community Center http://www.sonomacommunitycenter.org
The Measure of Things: typographer Erik Spiekermann designs an edition for unamono and explains his design work in this interview. “The idea behind the designs was to make the syntax of the work visible. When I see an image by a constructivist, I know how it has come about. In this case, the same applies: the unusual format naturally inspires you to make something of it. That’s why I decided simply to measure the thing out.”: So claims Erik Spiekermann, according to Monocle Magazin “the world's most celebrated living typographer”, whose talents have won him an almost cult-like following in design circles and among his over 300.000 followers on twitter. In light of this, it seems only natural that the first line of men’s scarves and pocket squares designed by Erik for unamono would be based...
A new format for Cult TV. How to condense a movie talent in 1 minute and make a simple interview look great! Basically, how to get the best out of necessity... It all started with a question: what can we do with all the interviews we made, to make them shorter and look great, despite the fact they were shot on location, sometimes outdoor, not on nice set, with grainy or flat quality and without nice lights or movie footage to insert? And still let their content value to stick out at its best? Most of them were not in Italian, so we needed subtitling. So we thought that had we been forced to put some words on the video, the best way to do it was to dubb them with oversound, letting the keywords come out like gfx and playing with editing that sums up the best lines of each interview so to tu...
