In this segment of On Location, Coyote visits the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum for Stingray feeding time!
The middle of the desert is not typically the place one would think to visit for an up close Stingray encounter but that’s all about to change. While visiting one of their favorite places in Arizona, the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, the Brave Wilderness team learned about an exciting new exhibit where visitors can actually touch and feed Cownose Stingrays. So on their day off from filming the team decided to give it a try for themselves and oh boy was it incredible!

The Story: For the past few weeks it was pouring down with rain, so it wasn't the best filming weather!! So I decided that the next day that it was Sunny, I would go out and try to get some (Luckily it Was A School Day, So I Missed Out On Maths) - Ahah, Nah (Maths Is Good, kids - Stay in School haha) - But I went down to my favourite Stingray viewing Spot, and within a few hours of searching and 7 Bull Shark Attacks Later.. I had spotted 1 cruising around In the shallows!! So I dived off the kayak, And managed to get him, study him, chat about him and let him go!! But he wasn't that big, So I kept searching... And after going for a 30 minute walk up the beach, I came back to find a Stingray lying next to my Kayak!! So after thinking that there was something wrong with her, I found out that she was pregnant... and I ended up witnessing the delivery of 12 Baby Stingrays!!
Although It looks like there was only 10, Big Mama gave birth to 2 more off camera, (The Ones Swimming Off At The End)

There's a lot of examples of wild marine creatures and humans coming together in friendship. But one of the most pleasurable encounters for a regular tourist like me and you, is with Stingrays in the Cayman Islands.
Today, I'm joining a tour group heading out to meet with wild stingrays in a place called - what else - Stingray City. There are many tour operators that make daily trips to see the stingrays but I went with Moby Dick Tours because they seemed to provide more time and interaction with the stingrays...
As it turns out the water here at Stingray City is perfect for this kind of thing. It's over 80 degrees fahrenheit, very clear, and only about three feet deep. And as soon as you get in the water, the stingrays appear all around you like magic.
Stingrays are actually a relative of the Shark, but unlike sharks, show very little aggressive behavior...The eyes are very reptillian looking and those holes behind the eyes? They are called spiracles - they use these to take in water and then pump that water out through holes on their bottom when hunting
These Stingrays we find here at Stingray City are Southern Atlantic Stingrays. They are not dangerous to humans. Yes, they do have a barb on their tale that is venomous, but the stingrays only use them for defensive purposes. Here at Stingray City the stingrays are extra calm because they are used to human interaction.
This encounter between humans and stingrays actually started right here on the sandbar almost fifty years ago. Fisherman on their way back to port would stop to clean their catch here and discard buckets of fish guts over the side. Every since then, the relationship between human and stingray has only grown more affectionate.
Kissing a stingray turns out to be a lot easier than I thought. First you learn how to hold a stingray and be calm because they pick up on your energy and emotions. If you are calm, they are calm. They you just lift them up and give them a big kiss.
After spending an hour or so with the stingrays it's time to leave Stingray City and head back to port. The guys running Moby Dick tours have been doing this trip for over 10 years but say they still get a thrill seeing people interact with stingrays.

Stingrays are a group of rays, which are cartilaginous fishes related to sharks. They are classified in the suborder Myliobatoidei of the order Myliobatiformes and consist of eight families: Hexatrygonidae (sixgill stingray), Plesiobatidae (deep water stingray), Urolophidae (stingarees), Urotrygonidae (round rays), Dasyatidae (whiptail stingrays), Potamotrygonidae (river stingrays), Gymnuridae (butterfly rays), and Myliobatidae (eagle rays).[1][2]
Most stingrays have one or more barbed stingers (modified from dermal denticles) on the tail, which are used exclusively in self-defense. The stinger may reach a length of approximately 35 cm (14 in), and its underside has two grooves with venom glands.[3] The stinger is covered with a thin layer of skin, the integumentary sheath, in which the venom is concentrated.[4] A few members of the suborder, such as the manta rays and the porcupine ray, do not have stingers.[5]
Stingrays are common in coastal tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world, and also includes species found in warmer temperate oceans, such as Dasyatis thetidis, and those found in the deep ocean, such as Plesiobatis daviesi. The river stingrays, and a number of whiptail stingrays (such as the Niger stingray), are restricted to fresh water. Most myliobatoids are demersal (next to lowest zone), but some, such as the pelagic stingray and the eagle rays, are pelagic.[6]
While most stingrays are relatively widespread and not currently threatened, for several species (for example Taeniura meyeni, D. colarensis, D. garouaensis, and D. laosensis), the conservation status is more problematic, leading to them being listed as vulnerable or endangered by IUCN. The status of several other species are poorly known, leading to them being listed as Data Deficient.[7]

Death by stingray is extremely rare, but getting hit with their barb still hurts like hell — which is why you need to learn how to play footsie safely with these sea creatures.
Step 1:
Know where stingrays like to hang out – in shallow water along the ocean shoreline and near the mouth of a bayou.
Step 2:
Do The Stingray Shuffle. Slide your feet along the ocean floor rather than lifting them; it will prevent you from stepping down hard on a stingray – the most common way of getting stuck by the serrated stinger on its tail. Plus, the movement warns stingrays that you're in the area.
Step 3:
Consider wearing water shoes. If you do step on a stingray, your footwear may prevent the barb from penetrating.
Step 4:
If you're stepping into murky water from a boat, poke around with a stick before you set down your foot.
Tip
Invest in stingray guards or leggings if you do a lot of wade fishing.
Step 5:
If you do get stung and are bleeding, apply pressure to stem the bleeding and seek immediate medical care.
Step 6:
If the injury is minor, remove the stinger with tweezers, being careful not to squeeze it further into the skin. Clean the area with soap and water, and plunge it the hottest water you can tolerate for 30 minutes. Or, apply a chemical heat pack. The heat kills the venom that causes the intense pain.
Tip
Test the water with a thermometer before immersing the wounded area so you don't burn yourself. The water shouldn't be above 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 7:
Have a doctor clean out the wound to make sure none of the barb remains in your body. Left-behind pieces will cause infection.

History and profile
Launched in 1991 by Jake Winebaum,FamilyFun is written for parents with children aged 3 to 12, and focuses on family cooking, vacations, parties, holidays, crafts, and learning. The magazine was purchased by Disney Publishing Worldwide in 1992 and Meredith acquired FamilyFun from Disney in 2012.Disney Interactive relaunched its FamilyFun.go.com site as Spoonful.com in 2012. Stingray City, Grand Cayman
Stingray City is a series of shallow sandbars found in the North Sound of Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. It is a tourist attraction, where southern stingrays are found in abundance and visitors can pet and interact with the animals.
Location
Stingray City is in the shallow waters of the northwest corner of Grand Cayman's North Sound. It is just inside a natural channel that passes through the barrier reef and consists of a string of sandbars crossing the North Sound from Morgan Harbour to Rum Point.
History
It may be that stingrays began gathering in the area decades ago when fisherman returning from an excursion, navigated behind a reef into the sound, and cleaned their fish in the calm water of the shallows and sandbar area. The fish guts and squid were thrown overboard and the stingrays eventually congregated to feast there. Soon the stingrays associated the sound of a boat engine with food. As this practice turned into a tradition, divers realized that the stingrays could be fed by hand.

There's a lot of examples of wild marine creatures and humans coming together in friendship. But one of the most pleasurable encounters for a regular tourist like me and you, is with Stingrays in the Cayman Islands. Today, I'm joining a tour group heading out to meet with wild stingrays in a place called - what else - Stingray City. There are many tour operators that make daily trips to see the stingrays but I went with Moby Dick Tours because they seemed to provide more time and interaction with the stingrays... As it turns out the water here at Stingray City is perfect for this kind of thing. It's over 80 degrees fahrenheit, very clear, and only about three feet deep. And as soon as you get in the water, the stingrays appear all around you like magic. Stingrays are actually a relative of the Shark, but unlike sharks, show very little aggressive behavior...The eyes are very reptillian looking and those holes behind the eyes? They are called spiracles - they use these to take in water and then pump that water out through holes on their bottom when hunting These Stingrays we find here at Stingray City are Southern Atlantic Stingrays. They are not dangerous to humans. Yes, they do have a barb on their tale that is venomous, but the stingrays only use them for defensive purposes. Here at Stingray City the stingrays are extra calm because they are used to human interaction. This encounter between humans and stingrays actually started right here on the sandbar almost fifty years ago. Fisherman on their way back to port would stop to clean their catch here and discard buckets of fish guts over the side. Every since then, the relationship between human and stingray has only grown more affectionate. Kissing a stingray turns out to be a lot easier than I thought. First you learn how to hold a stingray and be calm because they pick up on your energy and emotions. If you are calm, they are calm. They you just lift them up and give them a big kiss. After spending an hour or so with the stingrays it's time to leave Stingray City and head back to port. The guys running Moby Dick tours have been doing this trip for over 10 years but say they still get a thrill seeing people interact with stingrays. They are classified in the suborder Myliobatoidei of the order Myliobatiformes and consist of eight families: Hexatrygonidae (sixgill stingray), Plesiobatidae (deep water stingray), Urolophidae (stingarees), Urotrygonidae (round rays), Dasyatidae (whiptail stingrays), Potamotrygonidae (river stingrays), Gymnuridae (butterfly rays), and Myliobatidae (eagle rays).[1][2] Most stingrays have one or more barbed stingers (modified from dermal denticles) on the tail, which are used exclusively in self-defense. The stinger may reach a length of approximately 35 cm (14 in), and its underside has two grooves with venom glands.[3] The stinger is covered with a thin layer of skin, the integumentary sheath, in which the venom is concentrated.[4] A few members of the suborder, such as the manta rays and the porcupine ray, do not have stingers.[5] Stingrays are common in coastal tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world, and also includes species found in warmer temperate oceans, such as Dasyatis thetidis, and those found in the deep ocean, such as Plesiobatis daviesi. The river stingrays, and a number of whiptail stingrays (such as the Niger stingray), are restricted to fresh water. Most myliobatoids are demersal (next to lowest zone), but some, such as the pelagic stingray and the eagle rays, are pelagic.[6] While most stingrays are relatively widespread and not currently threatened, for several species (for example Taeniura meyeni, D. colarensis, D. garouaensis, and D. laosensis), the conservation status is more problematic, leading to them being listed as vulnerable or endangered by IUCN. Step 1: Know where stingrays like to hang out – in shallow water along the ocean shoreline and near the mouth of a bayou. Step 2: Do The Stingray Shuffle. Slide your feet along the ocean floor rather than lifting them; it will prevent you from stepping down hard on a stingray – the most common way of getting stuck by the serrated stinger on its tail. Plus, the movement warns stingrays that you're in the area. Step 3: Consider wearing water shoes. If you do step on a stingray, your footwear may prevent the barb from penetrating. Step 4: If you're stepping into murky water from a boat, poke around with a stick before you set down your foot. Tip Invest in stingray guards or leggings if you do a lot of wade fishing. Step 5: If you do get stung and are bleeding, apply pressure to stem the bleeding and seek immediate medical care. Step 6: If the injury is minor, remove the stinger with tweezers, being careful not to squeeze it further into the skin. Clean the area with soap and water, and plunge it the hottest water you can tolerate for 30 minutes. Or, apply a chemical heat pack. The heat kills the venom that causes the intense pain. Tip Test the water with a thermometer before immersing the wounded area so you don't burn yourself. The water shouldn't be above 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Step 7: Have a doctor clean out the wound to make sure none of the barb remains in your body. Left-behind pieces will cause infection. Did You Know? About 1,500 Americans are injured by stingrays every year. -

[the kid nods] You sure?::Robber #1 with gun: [to the cashier] Money!::Nick DiMarco: [to the robbers] So... do I get mine on the house too?::Robber #1 with gun: No way asshole! You gotta pay!::Nick DiMarco: Now that's not fair. You gave the kid his for free... or maybe you're just too much of a chicken-shit to pick on someone your own size?::Robber #2 with knife: He's right, you shouldn't play favors. Save it for the station. [they scuffle a bit] Kristi, I was worried about you. You stormed out of the morgue on me... Where have you been?::Kristi Jones: I just needed some time to be alone.::Nick DiMarco: [Disappointed] Just get in the car.
Stingray
Ray is a shadowy character with a mysterious 'secret agent' past. People in trouble often come to him for help, since he has a lot of important and powerful contacts. He refuses to be paid for his services; however, those seeking his assistance must promise him a favor. Some time in the future, Ray will come to them and ask to collect on that favor, giving them some task that is often arduous and/or dangerous. The title of the show comes from the vintage Corvette Stingray that Ray drives.

Stingray
Gerry Anderson's third SF supermarionation saga told the adventures of the WASPs (the World Aquanaut Security Patrol) as they explored the oceans and kept the world safe from a variety of perils. The WASP's main weapon was Stingray, a super-sub under the command of Troy Tempest. Troy's copilot was Phones, and they were often joined on missions by Marina, a princess of the undersea kingdom of Pacifica. Marina could breathe under water, but was unable to speak. In charge of the WASPs was gruff Commander Shore, whose daughter Atlanta was both a member of his staff and Marina's rival for Troy's affection.

Southern California playing with the kids on the beach when I stepped directly on a Stingray. I happend to have the the Gopro rolling and caught it all on video. Yes it hurt. There's a lot of examples of wild marine creatures and humans coming together in friendship. But one of the most pleasurable encounters for a regular tourist like me and you, is with Stingrays in the Cayman Islands. Today, I'm joining a tour group heading out to meet with wild stingrays in a place called - what else - Stingray City. There are many tour operators that make daily trips to see the stingrays but I went with Moby Dick Tours because they seemed to provide more time and interaction with the stingrays... As it turns out the water here at Stingray City is perfect for this kind of thing. It's over 80 degrees fahrenheit, very clear, and only about three feet deep. So I decided that the next day that it was Sunny, I would go out and try to get some (Luckily it Was A School Day, So I Missed Out On Maths) - Ahah, Nah (Maths Is Good, kids - Stay in School haha) - But I went down to my favourite Stingray viewing Spot, and within a few hours of searching and 7 Bull Shark Attacks Later.. I had spotted 1 cruising around In the shallows!! So I dived off the kayak, And managed to get him, study him, chat about him and let him go!! But he wasn't that big, So I kept searching... And after going for a 30 minute walk up the beach, I came back to find a Stingray lying next to my Kayak!! So after thinking that there was something wrong with her, I found out that she was pregnant... and I ended up witnessing the delivery of 12 Baby Stingrays!!
Although It looks like there was only 10, Big Mama gave birth to 2 more off camera, (The Ones Swimming Off At The End)

There's a lot of examples of wild marine creatures and humans coming together in friendship. But one of the most pleasurable encounters for a regular tourist like me and you, is with Stingrays in the Cayman Islands.
Today, I'm joining a tour group heading out to meet with wild stingrays in a place called - what else - Stingray City. There are many tour operators that make daily trips to see the stingrays but I went with Moby Dick Tours because they seemed to provide more time and interaction with the stingrays...
As it turns out the water here at Stingray City is perfect for this kind of thing. It's over 80 degrees fahrenheit, very clear, and only about three feet deep. And as soon as you get in the water, the stingrays appear all around you like magic.
Stingrays are actually a relative of the Shark, but unlike sharks, show very little aggressive behavior...The eyes are very reptillian looking and those holes behind the eyes? They are called spiracles - they use these to take in water and then pump that water out through holes on their bottom when hunting
These Stingrays we find here at Stingray City are Southern Atlantic Stingrays. They are not dangerous to humans. Yes, they do have a barb on their tale that is venomous, but the stingrays only use them for defensive purposes. Here at Stingray City the stingrays are extra calm because they are used to human interaction.
This encounter between humans and stingrays actually started right here on the sandbar almost fifty years ago. Fisherman on their way back to port would stop to clean their catch here and discard buckets of fish guts over the side. Every since then, the relationship between human and stingray has only grown more affectionate.
Kissing a stingray turns out to be a lot easier than I thought. First you learn how to hold a stingray and be calm because they pick up on your energy and emotions. If you are calm, they are calm. They you just lift them up and give them a big kiss.
After spending an hour or so with the stingrays it's time to leave Stingray City and head back to port. The guys running Moby Dick tours have been doing this trip for over 10 years but say they still get a thrill seeing people interact with stingrays.

Stingrays are a group of rays, which are cartilaginous fishes related to sharks. They are classified in the suborder Myliobatoidei of the order Myliobatiformes and consist of eight families: Hexatrygonidae (sixgill stingray), Plesiobatidae (deep water stingray), Urolophidae (stingarees), Urotrygonidae (round rays), Dasyatidae (whiptail stingrays), Potamotrygonidae (river stingrays), Gymnuridae (butterfly rays), and Myliobatidae (eagle rays).[1][2]
Most stingrays have one or more barbed stingers (modified from dermal denticles) on the tail, which are used exclusively in self-defense. The stinger may reach a length of approximately 35 cm (14 in), and its underside has two grooves with venom glands.[3] The stinger is covered with a thin layer of skin, the integumentary sheath, in which the venom is concentrated.[4] A few members of the suborder, such as the manta rays and the porcupine ray, do not have stingers.[5]
Stingrays are common in coastal tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world, and also includes species found in warmer temperate oceans, such as Dasyatis thetidis, and those found in the deep ocean, such as Plesiobatis daviesi. The river stingrays, and a number of whiptail stingrays (such as the Niger stingray), are restricted to fresh water. Most myliobatoids are demersal (next to lowest zone), but some, such as the pelagic stingray and the eagle rays, are pelagic.[6]
While most stingrays are relatively widespread and not currently threatened, for several species (for example Taeniura meyeni, D. colarensis, D. garouaensis, and D. laosensis), the conservation status is more problematic, leading to them being listed as vulnerable or endangered by IUCN. The status of several other species are poorly known, leading to them being listed as Data Deficient.[7]

Kissing a stingray turns out to be a lot easier than I thought. First you learn how to hold a stingray and be calm because they pick up on your energy and emotions. If you are calm, they are calm. They you just lift them up and give them a big kiss.
After spending an hour or so with the stingrays it's time to leave Stingray City and head back to port. The guys running Moby Dick tours have been doing this trip for over 10 years but say they still get a thrill seeing people interact with stingrays.

Stingrays are a group of rays, which are cartilaginous fishes related to sharks. They are classified in the suborder Myliobatoidei of the order Myliobatiformes and consist of eight families: Hexatrygonidae (sixgill stingray), Plesiobatidae (deep water stingray), Urolophidae (stingarees), Urotrygonidae (round rays), Dasyatidae (whiptail stingrays), Potamotrygonidae (river stingrays), Gymnuridae (butterfly rays), and Myliobatidae (eagle rays).[1][2]
Most stingrays have one or more barbed stingers (modified from dermal denticles) on the tail, which are used exclusively in self-defense. The stinger may reach a length of approximately 35 cm (14 in), and its underside has two grooves with venom glands.[3] The stinger is covered with a thin layer of skin, the integumentary sheath, in which the venom is concentrated.[4] A few members of the suborder, such as the manta rays and the porcupine ray, do not have stingers.[5]
Stingrays are common in coastal tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world, and also includes species found in warmer temperate oceans, such as Dasyatis thetidis, and those found in the deep ocean, such as Plesiobatis daviesi. The river stingrays, and a number of whiptail stingrays (such as the Niger stingray), are restricted to fresh water. Most myliobatoids are demersal (next to lowest zone), but some, such as the pelagic stingray and the eagle rays, are pelagic.[6]
While most stingrays are relatively widespread and not currently threatened, for several species (for example Taeniura meyeni, D. colarensis, D. garouaensis, and D. laosensis), the conservation status is more problematic, leading to them being listed as vulnerable or endangered by IUCN. The status of several other species are poorly known, leading to them being listed as Data Deficient.[7]

Death by stingray is extremely rare, but getting hit with their barb still hurts like hell — which is why you need to learn how to play footsie safely with these sea creatures.
Step 1:
Know where stingrays like to hang out – in shallow water along the ocean shoreline and near the mouth of a bayou.
Step 2:
Do The Stingray Shuffle. Slide your feet along the ocean floor rather than lifting them; it will prevent you from stepping down hard on a stingray – the most common way of getting stuck by the serrated stinger on its tail. Plus, the movement warns stingrays that you're in the area.
Step 3:
Consider wearing water shoes. If you do step on a stingray, your footwear may prevent the barb from penetrating.
Step 4:
If you're stepping into murky water from a boat, poke around with a stick before you set down your foot.
Tip
Invest in stingray guards or leggings if you do a lot of wade fishing.
Step 5:
If you do get stung and are bleeding, apply pressure to stem the bleeding and seek immediate medical care.
Step 6:
If the injury is minor, remove the stinger with tweezers, being careful not to squeeze it further into the skin. Clean the area with soap and water, and plunge it the hottest water you can tolerate for 30 minutes. Or, apply a chemical heat pack. The heat kills the venom that causes the intense pain.
Tip
Test the water with a thermometer before immersing the wounded area so you don't burn yourself. The water shouldn't be above 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 7:
Have a doctor clean out the wound to make sure none of the barb remains in your body. Left-behind pieces will cause infection.
