Thousands of Australians are driving cars that could be time bombs.

Honda Australia has reassured owners caught up in the world's biggest safety recall that is replacing potentially fatal airbag detonators with upgraded parts.

Speaking to media at the launch of the new CR-V SUV in Canberra, two weeks after a Sydney man died when the airbag in his earlier-generation CR-V ruptured during an accident and a day after the ACCC demanded car makers provide transparent information to owners having their car repaired, Honda Australia Director Stephen Collins ensured the Japanese car maker is replacing faulty parts with the latest design inflators.

While he was adamant the new parts contain desiccant designed to absorb moisture to prevent degradation and confirmed they are no longer produced by the Takata company, which earlier this year filed for bankruptcy in Japan as a result of the crippling scandal, he could not offer an iron-clad guarantee they would not need to be replaced again in the long term.

Collins claimed that Honda is running ahead of other brands involved in the recall, which totals more than 2.3million cars in Australia alone, and has repaired more than 70 percent of the 650,379 Honda vehicles affected locally so far.

He said his company has sent out more than one million pieces of communication to known owners of the vehicles and has set-up a dedicated customer hotline serviced by 25 staff capable of speaking 160 languages to help repair the vehicles as quickly as possible.

But he cautioned that, with 145,000 Honda vehicles on the road that have still yet to be repaired, "we have a job to do" and urged customers to check if their vehicle is among those affected and, if so, to arrange to have the 30-minute free-of-charge process carried out immediately.

Collins denied the attention raised by the fatal accident in Sydney on July 13, which came just months after a Darwin woman was seriously injured in a low-speed incident, has forced Honda to accelerate its rectification plan.

"The events of the last week or two has brought this to the fore, but we haven't done anything different to what we were already doing, " he said "We have been working hard on this issue for some time and we're running ahead of the rest of the industry when it comes to our completion rate.

"We still have a job to do and we're urging customers to check their vehicle and have it repaired."

Collins said Honda has more than 105,000 new airbag inflators in stock around the country with another 30,000 due to arrive soon, and claimed Honda dealerships are repairing an average of 5000 vehicles per week with the capacity to double that at peak times.

He conceded, however, that the age of some vehicles, with models dating back to 2003, is proving difficult to make contact with current owners as they may be a second or third owner.

He also admitted Honda has contacted the family of the deceased Sydney man, who was sent five official recall notifications, but would not comment on whether the Japanese car maker has offered any form of compensation.
