John Peel's Festive 50's
For those who were never fortunate enough to hear his show, John Peel was a
highly respected DJ with BBC Radio One from 1967 until his sudden death in
October 2004.
John broadcasted a listener’s poll of favourite records each year for as
long as I can remember. Each year, before the end of November, you send in
your three favourite tracks for the year and through the wonders of science,
and other arcane acts, the festive fifty is born. Peel described the inner
workings of fifty compilation in an Observer articles in 1986 and 1987.
There are also articles that appeared in NME from 1988 and 1989.
In June 1998 John Peel was honoured for services to broadcasting with an
OBE.
Lee Thacker is currently putting a book together based on the Festive Fifty
number ones.
