More of Kurosawa’s Unfilmed Screenplays to be Made into Films

  21 May 2017 Kurosawa Production and the Chinese production company Jinke Entertainment have signed a deal that gives the latter production rights to all of Akira Kurosawa’s unfilmed screenplays. The deal excludes only The Mask of the Black Death which is already in production at another Chinese company. Read »

Other Topical Issues

Gendai no noo (Modern Noh) - As part of a project to celebrate his centenary, Kurosawa's unfinished 1983 documentary on Noh theatre was to be completed and released sometime in 2010. Current status unknown.

The Masque of Black Death - Also related to AK100, Kurosawa's unfilmed script for Edgar Allan Poe's Masque of Red Death was to be turned into an animated film. Current status unknown.

High and Low remake - Since at least the early 1990s, Martin Scorsese has reportedly been working to get Kurosawa's High and Low remade in Hollywood. The last we heard was in 2010, when Mike Nichols was set to direct and comedian Chris Rock was working on the script.

Seven Samurai Hollywood remake - The Weinstein Company and Kurosawa Production are working on a contemporary remake of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. Here's the latest, from 2011.

Another Seven Samurai project - Christopher McQuarrie has announced a multi-platform project about US Navy SEALs, inspired by Seven Samurai. See here for the latest.

The Magnificent Seven remake - A remake of the Magnificent Seven, itself an adaptation of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, is under production. See here for the latest.

Ni-oh - Koei is working on a video game that at least at some point was based on an unfilmed Kurosawa script. See here for the latest news.
