I wasn't going to do a playlist this week. Too much listening to Fad Gadget, Diesel Park West and Billy Childish adds up to a limited choice for a playlist, but what with Steve Coleman's 10/10/82 talk falling into my lap late last night, I thought I would conjure up a playlist from the charts from that particular week.
I can't say with any authority that SPGB members back in '82 were listening to the songs selected, but I know that I was.

Apparently, if you hit play on the cassette you can hear a few of the tracks from this week's playlist. By accident, the tracks selected seem to have a sixties theme. That just happens to be the sort of music that I've been listening to this week.

From The West Coast With Love

Looking for a jpeg for The Jam album, Sound Affects*, allowed me to stumble across this excellent early eighties mixtape selection from somebody working or interning or squatting (I don't know) at a Seattle based FM station called KEXP Radio.

Don't know if it's some sort of college radio station. If they're playing stuff like this, I'll have to check it out online sometime.

Of the 21 tracks listed, I have 12 of them and wouldn't mind adding at another 4 of them. One quibble I might have is that the original demo of The Jam's 'That's Entertainment' is better than the version that ended up on Sound Affects. But it's a minor point; it's like saying Charlie Nicholas was better than Lubo Moravcik. They were both brilliant for Celtic,so it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

So much easier snaffling someone else's playlist/mixtape than coming up with your own.

*Arguably one of my favourite album covers of all time. I think it's the contrasting colours.

Pardon the pun, but it was wreckless of me to inadvertently leave two songs on permanent repeat on iTunes overnight whilst the volume was down. I mean, I love both versions of the song, but the play count is now lying to me about how much I love the song.

Sadly, this wee entry doesn't even have a happy ending. Another 30 minutes of not discovering the musical mistake would have finally displaced Cheap Trick's 'Surrender' from the Top 25 Most Played folder, but it wasn't to be. Maybe next time.

On second thoughts, with choices 1 through 7 I was doing so well, as well.

A wee bit muso . . . a wee bit obscure. The recent announcement of the one-off reunion tour affording me the opportunity to splice in a solo song from the most talented Spice Girl to come off as oh so ironic (but secretly liking the song . . . the cynics can take a running jump off of Ger's old platform shoes). Throw in a bit of revolutionary hip hop from The Coup to impress any passing American student r-r-r-revolutionary politico who stumbles across the blog on their way to the next cute agit-prop event, but I fuck it all up by revealing my true colours in choices 8, 9 and 10: Laminated Smash Hits magazines parked neatly in the back of the wardrobe alongside my K-Tel compilation albums.
