Social Seen: Rachael Finch horses about

Show comments

Commuters did a double-take on Tuesday morning when Rachael Finch rode into Martin Place on horseback holding aloft the Emirates Melbourne Cup.

Miss Universe Australia 2009 certainly caught the eye, clad in a red show jacket and sitting on top of a Clydesdale, in a bid to amp up excitement ahead of this year's "race that stops a nation" on Tuesday, November 7.

Finch was part of an all-girl team to promote the highly anticipated annual carnival that also included Victorian Racing Club's first female chairman, Amanda Elliott, and Flemington ambassador, Georgia Connolly.

"Yay, girl power," Sunrise news reader, Natalie Barr, shouted as they stopped by Seven's studios for a chat.

While Connolly offered up ideas on how Sydneysiders could get on the racing action with special events taking place in Barangaroo, Myer ambassador Finch offered up some fashion advice.

"I think it will be all about the exaggerated bell sleeves this year," she said.

"What is she talking about?" David "Kochie" Koch replied, playing up to his angry dad persona, which left Edwina Bartholomew to explain.

It was a completely different scene over at Westfield Paramatta, where 500 sneakerheads lined up for JD Sports' long-awaited NSW store opening.

Never ones to do things by halves, the self-titled "Undisputed King of Trainers" transformed the store into a sporting celebration with DJ Brizz on the decks, street dancers and special guests, the Western Sydney Wanderers.

The British retailer, with over 800 shops worldwide, infiltrated the Australian active wear market in April much to the consternation of locals, Hype and Rebel Sports.

With three Australian shops already under its belt in less than three months, JD Sports shows no signs of slowing down. Next stop, Miranda.

While it was all about the latest trainers over at JD, VIPs couldn't get enough of the cocktails on offer at The Star's launch of their Studios at The Star on Tuesday evening.

Guests got a chance to enjoy their three new spaces – part penthouse, part suite – each with its own unique theme.

Miss World Australia 2013 Erin Holland hosted the 1970s Glam room; presenter of The Loop on Eleven, Scott Tweedie, showed guests around the gamer's sci-fi utopia Cyberpunk studio; while Home and Away's Nic Westaway entertained in the sultry love nest, the Dark Romance suite.

Westaway was spotted wasting no time showing Miss Universe Australia 2014 and I'm a Celebrity â€Ĥ star Tegan Martin the boudoir in the Dark Romance suite.

But Martin didn't seem to take any notice, saying the night was the "most fun" she has had but "especially in the '70s room" that comes complete with a karaoke lounge.

Also in attendance were Miss Universe Australia 2015 Monika Radulovic and her fiance Alesandro Ljubicic, and fashion stylists Fleur Egan and Donny Galella.

As seen on Sundays in The Sun-Herald's S liftout.
