DEMICS: New York City @ VBR

The Demics were a Canadian punk rock band, active in the late 1970s. Originally formed in London, Ontario in 1977, the band consisted of vocalist Keith Whittaker, guitarist Rob Brent, bassist Iain Atkinson and drummer J. D. Weatherstone. Through 1978, the band were rising stars in the Canadian punk scene. They recorded their debut EP in the fall of that year, and subsequently moved to Toronto to be closer to the centre of the punk scene. The EP's single, "New York City", was the band's breakthrough hit on CFNY in 1979. Brent left the band and was replaced by Steve Koch. The band released a self-titled full-length album in 1980, but subsequently broke up due to internal tensions. In 1996, a new CD compiling both of the band's original albums was released. Also that year, "New York City" was named the greatest Canadian song of all time in a reader poll by the music magazine Chart. Vocalist Keith Whittaker died of cancer in July 1996.
Bullseye Records of Canada released singer Keith Whittaker's final recordings on a twelve song CD called Drink To Me in August 2007.

VICE SQUAD: Defiant @ VBR

The band's prevailing themes are still very much old school punk rock, revolving heavily around political rebellion and personal expression. This comes out right up front. The album opens up with the driving "Voice Of The People" and it's pointed line "Freedom of speech is against the law. Now we're all Criminals." It's quickly followed by the catchy "Britain Is Still Burning," which calls out the fact that even though punk rock may have made it into the mainstream, there is still a stronghold of "true punk rockers" that follow the rebellious ideas of the political side of punk rock. The music, however, is much tighter than in the old days. This latest incarnation of Vice Squad is tight, and while they flirt with metal riffs and guitar solos, there is never any way you would hear a song and think for a moment this was anything but a punk band. There are tons of great songs on this album. The melodic anthem, "Don't Let the B***ards Grind You Down" has all of the qualities of a true old school anthem, with all of its message and energy, paired with a chorus that will easily get a crowd pumping its collective fist. "Defiant" has a catchy riff that reminds me a bit of "Summertime Blues" for a moment, and then digs deep into an '80s-era punk hook and yet-another fist-pumping chorus.
And I'll take this moment to admit that when I saw this album had a song with the title "The Story Of My Life," I was mildly apprehensive at hearing yet another cover of the Social Distortion song. It's not that song. Instead, the song is a driving dark tune described by the band as "almost a Christmas song but without the goodwill". Indeed, it's a dark powerful tune, that offers a nice tempo change, and is then quickly followed up by the fast rocker "You Can't Do That," a song with a... questionable chorus... let's just say that one wonders if you're hearing a blatant four-letter word or simply Beki Bondage's accent. It's nice to hear that time hasn't mellowed Beki Bondage, but has made her a better singer teamed up with better musicians who can keep it together as they hammer out tight thrash riffs. While she occasionally sounds like more than a few different '80s icons, the band always lets you know this is old school British hardcore punk - played a lot better than many of the bands did it when they were first trying it.

D.O.A.: Punk Rock Singles 1978-1999 @ VBR

Besides re-releasing a completely different kind of 'best of' record -- 1984's Bloodied but Unbowed -- this year D.O.A.'s Sudden Death Records also unleashes what can often be the best kind of compilation: a singles anthology, with a name that says it all.
At the time of the punk explosion, the Bee Gees were the biggest selling act since the Beatles. Of course, because of its ethics and original motives conflicted this style of music and the "lifestyle" that accompanied it, disco had become one of punk's primary target. The following year, Vancouver's D.O.A. put out "Disco Sucks" as their first single, and could arguably be the most memorable attack against the genre. On top of that, the rest of the 7" dared to defy forms of authority outside the music industry, with anthems such as "Nazi Training Camp", "Royal Police", and "I Woke Up Screaming".
While the punk explosion had led to the formation and success of countless groups, many had abandoned the ethics that motivated the genre in the first place. From the start, D.O.A. were undeniably a real punk band; they had minimal training and a minimal line-up, and what they said and sounded like expressed their skepticism and discontent for what was going on around them. It is also worth stressing that the band was D.I.Y., having created their own label to release their music.

SIN DIOS --- 3 ALBUMS....

SIN DIOS: (1997) Guerra a La Guerra [VBR]

Sin Dios (English: Godless) is a hardcore/anarcho-punk band from Spain that formed in 1988 in Madrid. Their first gigs were held in squatted houses (in Spanish Casa Okupa). In 1990 they released their first demo "...Ni amo" which contained 13 tracks and took them to their first tour across Spain always playing within autonomous and libertarian surroundings. In 1991 they recorded with another band a split L.P., "Ruido Anticapitalista" (Anticapitalist Noise), produced by the band's Potential Hardcore (alternative label). Since then, they have produced five albums and many eps and complitaions. Also been to numerous concert tours across Europe, Latin America and Japan.
On the 30th of July 2006 the band announced that they would "cease its musical activity". The announcement was followed among other things by "TO OUR ENEMIES: WE CONTINUE ON OTHER FRONTS" and by denunciations to the Israeli aggression, American imperialism and the like.

EDDIE & THE HOT RODS: (1996) Doing Anything They Wanna Do @ VBR

Arriving during the waning days of pub rock, Eddie & the Hot Rods helped usher in punk rock in the United Kingdom. Working from the same bluesy, Stonesy three-chord foundation as contemporaries like Dr. Feelgood, the Hot Rods were faster, tougher, wilder and louder than any other pub-rock band. They also celebrated adolescent abandon, unlike their peers, who usually concentrated on working-class subjects. Developing a substantial cult following by touring the pub circuit relentlessly, Eddie & the Hot Rods, with their fast, tough rock & roll, made the pub-rock taverns more willing to book wilder acts like the Damned and the Sex Pistols, thereby firing the first shot in the U.K. punk revolution. They also made some inroads on the pop charts with their 1976 debut EP Live at the Marquee and the singles "Teenage Depression" and "Do Anything You Wanna Do," but by the time the latter reached the Top Ten in the summer of 1977, Eddie & the Hot Rods and their bar-band demeanor had already begun to appear outdated. The group's following declined sharply over the next two years, and they disbanded in 1980. Although they never wound up as stars, the band undeniably made an impact in the birth of punk rock.

EDDIE & THE HOT RODS: Better Late Than Never @ VBR

Despite popular belief to the contrary, Eddie and the Hot Rods were never a punk rock band -- they were solidly in the "fast and loud" division of the rock-revivalist pub rock school, alongside the Count Bishops and the 101'ers, and they were a lot more interested in playing old-school rock & roll with plenty of swagger than bad-mouthing the Queen or fermenting anarchy. In short, what made Eddie and the Hot Rods a good band has never dated or gone out of style, which may be why, of the bands from the U.K.'s class of 1977, they're one of the few who can serve up a new album today that doesn't sound like a pale shadow of their former selves -- or at least vocalist Barry Masters still can, since he's the only member of the Hot Rods' classic lineup who appears on 2003's Better Late Than Never. Still, Masters doesn't tarnish the name of his band with Better Late; he's in great voice, sounding like a tougher and more attitudinal Roger Daltrey these days, and if the band doesn't match the manic energy of the Live at the Marquee edition of the Hot Rods, they're tight, they play with heart and soul, and they do a great job of helping Masters serve up a dozen examples of no-nonsense rock & roll, with the nose-thumbing "High Society," the classic car reminiscences of "Deep Blue Interceptor," and the cracking Ian Hunter cover of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" leading the pack. Masters remains a first-rate rock singer who knows how to get a band to make with the boogie, and Better Late Than Never proves there's plenty of life in him yet. A-BONES: (1991) The Life of Riley @ VBR

The A-Bones were the "band" side of KICKS Magazine/Norton Records folks Billy Miller and Miriam Linna, husband and wife, rocking down the highway of record-collecting life, creating tonal mayhem wherever and whenever they strike. Miriam did time as the original drummer for the Cramps and both of them cut some pretty wild sides with some identical twin guitarists as the Zantees, but the A-Bones sides are another matter entirely. This ain't no rockabilly cover rehash, The A's can write their own pieces of nonsense, not caring if they sound just like the record or not, unless it's sounding like some totally obscure vulgar piece of wax like "Marlene" by the Sonics.
But that's the whole point of this band; playing the bejesus out of this stuff, with a true American gum-chewing perspicacity, not some reverential/nostalgic tear rolling down its cheek. With Miller's go-for-broke vocals, Bruce Bennett's drenched in reverb guitar manglings, Marcus the Carcass' zoom bass combining with Linna's simple, kick-ass drumming and the new addition of horn-tootin' fool Lars Espensen, this is a noise combo to be reckoned with, the kind of band that Jon Bon Jovi sees in his nightmares. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide

THE SELECTER: (1995) Hairspray (320 cbr)

Despite being the band that got the least press during the ska revival of the early '80s, the Selecter, while only recording one undeniably fine record, deserved better than they got. Hailing from Coventry, England, the same hometown as ska pals the Specials, the Selecter's secret weapon was lead singer Pauline Black, arguably the best lead singer of the ska revival, who gave the jumpy and jittery songs an edge that veered into haunting drama. Although they got off to a roaring start with their debut record, 1980's Too Much Pressure, the second record, Celebrate the Bullet, was a strained follow-up that led to the band's rapid demise. Black spent some time singing solo and eventually re-joined guitarist Neol Davis in a Selecter reunion in the early '90s that has seen them become dance club favorites. According to those attending Selecter shows, the vibe is strong and the music great.

THE DICKIES: (1995) Idjit Savant (320 cbr)

Dickies LPs are like comets: rarely sighted, always great. The fourth LP over a 16-year career and first since 1989's Second Coming is another humorous punk-pop LP that brings huge smiles. If a little more spotty than Second Coming, there's still plenty of lip-smacking tunes highlighted by the band's obvious strength all these years, singer Leonard Phillips. His cartoonish delivery has sometimes obfuscated what a fine singer he actually is. You see that here on "Toxic Avenger," guitarist Stan Lee's Motörhead/Kiss/Queen/Ozzy parody (complete with MOR keyboards/guitars) that contains the LP's biggest hooks, thanks to Phillips' consummate singing. "Out of the rust and into the slime/Everyone thinks that he's out of his
mind" is a big hook, a scream of a superhero sendup. Many missed "Just Say Yes" on the previous year's "Roadkill" single, but it's the hottest Dickies-pop since the song it openly rips off, the Dawn of the Dickies single "Manny, Moe & Jack." "Zeppelina" is good goofy-gas, and "Elevator" and "Pretty Ballerina" are the sort of great '60s radio pop the band moved into in the late '80s, both done so well they should've been splashed all over the radio. And to revisit another old theme, "Stuck in a pagoda with Tricia Toyota" is updated to "Stuck in a condo with Mr. Marlon Brando": "He's big and hairy/He's really scaring me." Prepare to burst out laughing, thinking of obese Marlon in the New York Post, when that comes on. Once upon a time, the Dickies were about the only U.S. punk band that sold records anywhere, with six straight U.K. hit singles. A decade and a half later it was "the year that punk broke," and no one seemed to want to know the Dickies not only still existed, but that they were killer and comic as ever.

THE DICKIES: Locked 'N' Loaded (320 cbr) Link Update!!

Featuring the late-'80 lineup of the group at a London 1990 show, the well-recorded Locked 'n' Loaded is no more or no less what it is -- and why not? If We Aren't the World! is the better live album thanks to its career retrospective feel and many highlights from the first version of the group, Locked 'n' Loaded is still a fine enough aural document of the demi-legends having a blast in the land of its greatest successes. A few then-recent cuts surface -- "Cross-Eyed Tammy" and "Goin' Homo," from Second Coming, and the theme song from the Killer Klowns EP, which makes for a fine start. One then hard to find track also surfaced: "Just Say Yes," the group's nutty indulgence anthem, which wouldn't get a proper studio release in America for a few more years. Otherwise it's nostalgia galore from the band's early days, with a merry inclusion of various Stukas Over Disneyland highlights as well, like the glorious pop fun of "Pretty Please Me" and "She's a Hunch Back." "If Stewart Could Talk" always works best if one actually sees Leonard Graves Phillips talking to his sock-puppet penis, admittedly, but such points are quibbling. The hilarious, bizarro cover versions with which the band helped make its name all surface -- "Eve of Destruction," "Paranoid," "Gigantor," "Banana Splits" -- but it's the originals that really showcase the band's continuing appeal. The Dawn of the Dickies classics "(Stuck in a Pagoda) With Tricia Toyota" and "Manny, Moe & Jack" still are godly power pop punk of the best kind, and who could resist other winners like "Curb Job" and "Give It Back"? Add in Phillips' between-song patter and jokes, and the Dickies yet rule their roost. --- by Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

THE DICKIES: Road Kill (320cbr)

Resurfacing to an extent in 1993 with new and slightly older material, the Dickies were more or less killing a bit of time with Roadkill, though with its usual humor. The title track, regarding an alcohol-swilling animal killing machine, is notable for having Phillips sounding a bit more lower-pitched than usual, but it's still him, while Lee rocks out with the usual fire and the band rips along. It's not quite a new Dickies classic, but it's fun enough. The giddy "Just Say Yes," originally surfacing on a European single in previous years, finally appears domestically here, its views on the drug problem not the most orthodox, as one might guess (though rumors of the band's own struggles with such things cast a slightly unfortunate light on the situation). "Dead Heat" rocks and riffs along pleasantly enough to conclude it -- there's some nice Lee guitar work here and there, but otherwise this is more of a throwaway.--- by Ned Raggett, All Music Guide.

Das Klown is a street/hardcore/punk band formed in 1989. Das Klown is known for their "In Your Face" punk style. Singer AJ Ransdell is often seen performing in clown make-up and a red nose. Das Klown, one of the most original bands to come out of Los Angeles in the last decade. Raw and to the point, Das Klown's music is melodic, hard-core Southern California punk. True to their own strong vision, they are one of a kind. "We aren't like that copycat bullshit", says front man A.J. "We refuse to change our sound to conform to what's expected by average-minded idiots". Tough-spirited and independent, Das Klown doesn't sound like any other band. "We're old school.
