Frank Zappa - Burnt Weeny Sandwich

Burnt Weeny Sandwich is the first of two albums by the Mothers of Invention that Frank Zappa released in 1970, after he had disbanded the original lineup. While Weasels Ripped My Flesh focuses on complex material and improvised stage madness, this collection of studio and live recordings summarizes the leader's various interests and influences at the time. It opens and closes on '50s pop covers, "WPLJ" and "Valarie." "Aybe Sea" is a Zappafied sea shanty, while "Igor's Boogie" is named after composer Igor Stravinsky, the closest thing to a hero Zappa ever worshipped. But the best material is represented by "Holiday in Berlin," a theme that would become central to the music of 200 Motels, and "The Little House I Used to Live In," including a virtuoso piano solo by Ian Underwood. Presented as an extended set of theme and variations, the latter does not reach the same heights as "King Kong." In many places, and with the two aforementioned exceptions in mind, Burnt Weeny Sandwich sounds like a set of outtakes from Uncle Meat, which already summarized to an extent the adventures of the early Mothers. It lacks some direction, but those allergic to the group's grunts and free-form playing will prefer it to the wacky Weasels Ripped My Flesh.

Einstürzende Neubauten - Five on the open-Ended Richter-Scale

Along with Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, Germany's Einstürzende Neubauten ("collapsing new buildings") helped pioneer industrial music with an avant-garde mix of white-noise guitar drones, vocals verging on the unlistenable at times, and a clanging, rhythmic din produced by a percussion section consisting of construction materials, power tools, and various metal objects. Einstürzende Neubauten was founded by vocalist/guitarist Blixa Bargeld and percussionist/American expatriate N.U. Unruh in Berlin as a performance art collective; their early activities included a seemingly inexplicable half-naked appearance on the Berlin autobahn, where the duo spent some time beating on the sides of a hole in an overpass. The group's early lineup also included percussionists Beate Bartel and Gudrun Gut, plus contributor and sound engineer Alexander Van Borsig

Einstürzende Neubauten's earliest recordings are mostly unstructured, free-form noise issued on various cassettes and singles, including their first single "Fuer den Untergang," the 1981 EP Schwarz, and the 1982 album Kollaps. Some of these recordings are compiled on the Strategies Against Architecture '80-'83 collection, with live shows on the cassette-only 2x4. Bartel and Gut were replaced by ex-Abwräts member F.M. Einheit (who served as Neubauten's chief machinery operator) in 1983, when guitarist and electronics expert Alexander Hacke and Abwräts bassist Mark Chung also joined. A tour of England opening for the Birthday Party resulted in a contract with Some Bizarre Records, which released the slightly more structured Zeichnungen des Patienten O.T., as well as consternation from club owners and journalists over Neubauten's stage demolitions and frequent ensuing violence.

Like watching a stalker cleverly follow its prey for miles, only to watch it shy away just short of lodging a knife into the back of the followed, Fünf Auf der Nach Oben Offenen Richterskala (Five on the Open-Ended Richter-Scale) is Einstürzende Neubauten at their unsettling, gripping, and tension-ridden best. It was also the group's most subdued and measured work to that point, organic dark ambient that rarely utilized the chaos and cacaphony for which they had become known. You expect the big release during the closer, "Kein Bestandteil Sein," but you don't get it.

Tom Waits - Heartattack and Vine

Heartattack and Vine, Tom Waits' first album in two years and his last of seven for Asylum Records, is a transitional album, with tracks like the rhythm-heavy title song and "'Til the Money Runs Out" foreshadowing the sonic experiments of the Island albums, while piano-with-orchestra tracks like "Saving All My Love for You" and "On the Nickel" (written as a motion-picture title tune) hark back to Waits' Randy Newman-influenced early days. It is just as well that Waits never entirely gave up on the ballad material; "Jersey Girl," a Drifters-style song, is a winner, and it was appropriated by Bruce Springsteen on his 1981 tour. Also, at least at this point, the rougher tunes all tended to sound the same.

Thomas Alan "Tom" Waits (born December 7, 1949) is an American singer-songwriter, composer and actor. Waits has a distinctive voice, described by critic Daniel Durchholz as sounding "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car." With this trademark growl, his incorporation of pre-rock music styles such as blues, jazz, and vaudeville, and experimental tendencies verging on industrial music, Waits has built up a distinctive musical persona. He has worked as a composer for movies and musical plays and as a supporting actor in films, including Down By Law and Bram Stoker's Dracula. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his soundtrack work on One from the Heart.

Lyrically, Waits' songs frequently present atmospheric portrayals of grotesque, often seedy characters and places – although he has also shown a penchant for more conventional ballads. He has a cult following and has influenced subsequent songwriters despite having little radio or music video support. His songs are best-known to the general public in the form of cover versions by more visible artists, "Jersey Girl," performed by Bruce Springsteen and "Downtown Train," performed by Rod Stewart. Although Waits' albums have met with mixed commercial success in his native United States, they have occasionally achieved gold album sales status in other countries. He has been nominated for a number of major music awards and has won Grammy Awards for two albums, Bone Machine and Mule Variations.

Tom Waits grew steadily less prolific after redefining himself as a junkyard noise poet with Swordfishtrombones, but the five-year wait between The Black Rider and 1999's Mule Variations was the longest yet. Given the fact that Waits decided to abandon major labels for the California indie Epitaph, Mule Variations would seem like a golden opportunity to redefine himself and begin a new phase of his career. However, it plays like a revue of highlights from every album he's made since Swordfishtrombones. Of course, that's hardly a criticism; the album uses the ragged cacophony of Bone Machine as a starting point, and proceeds to bring in the songwriterly aspects of Rain Dogs, along with its affection for backstreet and backwoods blues, plus a hint of the beatnik qualities of Swordfish. So Mule Variations delivers what fans want, in terms of both songs and sonics. But that also explains why it sounds terrific on initial spins, only to reveal itself as slightly dissatisfying with subsequent plays. All of Waits' Island records felt like fully conceived albums with genuine themes. Mule Variations, in contrast, is a collection of moments, and while each of those moments is very good (some even bordering on excellent), ultimately the whole doesn't equal the sum of its parts. While that may seem like nitpicking, some may have wanted a masterpiece after five years, and Mule Variations falls short of that mark. Nevertheless, this is a hell of a record by any other standard. Waits is still writing terrific songs and matching them with wildly evocative productions; furthermore, it's his lightest record in years — it's actually fun to listen to, even with a murder ballad here and a psycho blues there. In that sense, it's a unique item in his post-Swordfish catalog, and that may make up for it not being the masterpiece it seemed like it could have been.

The Velvet Underground - Peel Slowly and See (Box Set)

The Velvet Underground was an American experimental rock band formed in New York City, New York. First active from 1965 to 1973, their best-known members were Lou Reed and John Cale, who both went on to find success as solo artists. Although never commercially successful while together, the band is often cited by many critics as one of the most important and influential groups of their era and to many future musicians.

Conformed by: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); John Cale (vocals, acoustic & electric violas, sarinda, piano, organ, celeste, bass); Doug Yule (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, bass); Sterling Morrison (vocals, guitar, bass); Maureen "Moe" Tucker (vocals, percussion); Billy Yule (drums).


The Velvet Underground first gained a degree of fame and notoriety in New York City in 1966 when they were selected as the house band for Andy Warhol's Factory and his Exploding Plastic Inevitable events. The band's music and lyrics challenged conventional societal standards of the time, and broke ground for other musicians to do the same. The band favored experimentation, and also introduced a nihilistic outlook through some of their music. Their outsider attitude and experimentation has since been cited as pivotal to the rise of punk rock and, later, alternative rock.This box set includes complete and digitally remastered versions of all four of the band's studio albums released by the Lou Reed-led lineup, and a wealth of previously unreleased goodies.


Most serious Velvet fans have all four of the core studio albums already (although the third, self-titled LP is presented in its muffled, so-called "closet" mix), and will be most interested in the previously unavailable recordings, which do hold considerable fascination. The entire first disc is devoted to a drummer-less 1965 rehearsal tape in John Cale's loft, with radically different, almost folky run-throughs of most of the important songs from their classic debut, as well as a song that only made it onto Nico's first LP ("Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams"), and one which makes its first appearance anywhere (the Dylanesque "Prominent Men"). Other big bonuses include no less than seven outtakes from Loaded and other songs re-done by Reed on his early solo albums. And there are sundry other unreleased live and studio items, highlighted by a scorching live 1967 "Guess I'm Falling in Love" and the 1969 demo "Countess From Hong Kong."

There are also highlights from VU and Another View, longer versions of Loaded's "Sweet Jane" and "New Age," and an 80-page booklet. The thing is, though, that virtually everyone who's interested in this material has already bought the four studio albums, sometimes several times over. A separate release of the two discs or so of truly new material would have been welcomed by the many fans who aren't interested in paying for a five-CD box of stuff when they already have well over half of it.

Nico - The Marble Index

One of the most fascinating figures of rock's fringes, Nico hobnobbed, worked, and was romantically linked with an incredible assortment of the most legendary entertainers of the '60s.
The paradox of her career was that she herself never attained the fame of her peers, pursuing a distinctly individualistic and uncompromising musical career that was uncommercial, but wholly admirable and influential.

In 1965, she attracted the attention of Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who gave her a chance to record for his Immediate label, though the resulting single, which also featured Brian Jones and Jimmy Page on guitars, flopped. Shortly afterward, she moved to New York, where Andy Warhol installed her as a vestigial presence and occasional lead singer for the Velvet Underground. The band never really accepted her as a bona fide member and she departed in 1967, but not before contributing unforgettable deadpan vocals to three of the songs on their classic 1967 debut album.

Nico embarked on a solo career, recording folk-rock-flavored songs for her debut Chelsea Girl album with assistance from Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, and John Cale. Her 1969 follow-up, The Marble Index, was a dramatic departure that unveiled her doom-laden, gothic persona, produced by Cale and prominently featuring her deep vocals, impenetrable lyrics, and ghostly harmonium.

In The Nursery - A page of madness

Formed in Sheffield, England by brothers Klive and Nigel Humberstone in 1981, In the Nursery explored a strange fusion of industrialized military rhythms and classical and film soundtrack music. Devoted more to the former in their early years, the band debuted in 1983 with the mini-album When Cherished Dreams Come True, also contributing to several compilations over the next two years. After the 1985 Temper EP, the group's initial lineup had evaporated, leaving only the Humberstone brothers to record their first full-length effort, 1986's Twins, which began to explore classical influences in greater depth. Percussionist Q and French bilingual vocalist Dolores Marguerite C were added for 1987's Stormhorse, which was intended to resemble the soundtrack to an imaginary film.

The fifth in In the Nursery's series of silent film soundtracks, A Page of Madness itself is perhaps both the most obscure and most striking of the movies the Humberstone brothers have worked with so far. The liner notes describe a mid-'20s film depicting the life of a man who works as a janitor in an insane asylum to be near his wife, committed there for having trying to kill their child -- a strong subject no matter what the time or place. Combined with film techniques that suggest parallels to Man With a Movie Camera, earlier scored by In the Nursery, it gave the Humberstones a rich palette to work with.

Tuxedomoon - Ten Years in one night

Tuxedomoon es un grupo de música de vanguardia estadounidense, de estilo inclasificable, capaces de instrumentar temas new wave, jazz fussion o puramente experimentales, utilizando instrumentos tradicionales y sintetizadores. Creado en San Francisco, Estados Unidos, en 1977 por dos estudiantes de música electrónica, Blaine Reininger y Steven Brown. Otros músicos importantes que participaron en algún momento en la formación son Peter Principle y Winston Tong.

En 1980 publican su primer LP, Half Mute. En 1982, el coreógrafo Maurice Béjart les encarga la música para el ballet Divine, tributo a Greta Garbo. En 1983 Reininger deja el grupo para seguir su carrera en solitario. En 1985 publican Holy Wars, que se convierte en su mayor éxito comercial. Wim Wenders utiliza el tema Some Guys en las escenas iniciales de su película El cielo sobre Berlín.

Su último disco de estudio fue You, publicado en 1987.

Thomas Alan Waits, nació en Pomona, California en diciembre de 1949; pianista, cantante, compositor y actor estadounidense, famoso por sus canciones de tono áspero, inspiradas en escritores como Charles Bukowski y otros de la generación Beat, en especial Jack Kerouac.

En 1967 comenzó a trabajar en los cabarés de Los Ángeles, ambiente que le influyó mucho para las canciones de su primer disco, Closing Time (1973), aunque este álbum se vio eclipsado por The Eagles y Tim Buckley, pero fue con el álbum Heart of Saturday Night (1974) el que dio a conocer su personal estilo. Más tarde en 1975 con el disco en directo Nighthawks at the Diner combina canciones muy personales (entre ellas Better off without a wife) con entretenidos monólogos introductorios.

Also it participated in films as 'Under the weight of the law' (1986, of Jim Jarmusch), Drácula (1992, of Coppola) and 'Lives crossed' (1993, of Robert Altman) papers of more importance than in his previous incursions in the cinema. Also, 1991 composed music of the film 'Night in the Earth' (, of Jim Jarmusch) and the following year, it records Bone Machine (1992). A year later collaborated with William S. Grupo alemán conformado en 1991 por Olaf Parusel (compositor y arreglista), que en conjunción con Conny Levrow (voz) dió luz a su proyecto.

En esta ocasión te presentamos la primera producción del grupo, Urthona, realizada en 1992 con la disquera alemana Hyperium. Canciones melodiosas, voces muy estilizadas que nos llevan de la mano a una región de parajes efímeros y poco transitados.

Disfruten de éste excelente disco, un must have en cualquier repertorio gótico.

Kirlian Camera - Coroner's sun

Con más de 30 producciones en su haber, en esta ocasión Elena Fossi y Angelo Bergamini presentan 'Coroner's Sun', producción de 2006, albúm doble limitado a 3000 copias.
Excelente trabajo de la banda donde predomina el género electro industrial y el atmosférico, diferente a sus trabajos anteriores (puedes bajar el concierto de Berlin del 2000 en este mismo blog para comprobarlo).

Son tracks a destacar 'Ilegal apollogy of a crime', 'Kaczynski code' y 'Beauty as sin'.

Sopor Aeternus - Ich tote mich jedesmal

Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows (del Latín 'Sueño Eterno'), se le conoce en el argot solo como Sopor, es un proyecto Darkwave creado en 1989 por Anna-Varney Cantodea. Desde el inicio de su proyecto , la música de Varney ganó notoriedad debido al sentido de extremo individualismo, melancolía y pesimismo que rodea su música. Interpretando una variedad de estilos musicales y visuales a su persona.

En varias entrevistas realizadas a Cantodea (en la cual nunca aparece de frente al entrevistador ya que evita a toda costa la interacción hombre - hombre) ha comentado que cerca de tres décadas de su vida estuvo transitando en estados de depresión, desesperación y soledad, las cuales le provocaron muchas experiencias y enfermedad. Así, esos periodos de su vida la llevaron a descubir 'El ensamble de las Sombras', un grupo de espíritus que Cantodea ha dicho que llegan a ella en sueños y le proveen de inspiración musical.

'Ich tote mich jedesmal' ('I kill myself every time again') es la primera producción de Sopor Aeternus realizada en 1994. Consistente en música neo medieval y barroca, a la que se le agregan beats electrónicos y órganos de aire. Mucha de la instrumentación fué hecha en sintetizador debido al bajo presupuesto, pero a pesar de ello, es uno de las producciones más auténticas de Cantodea. El álbum incluye intervenciones al final de los tracks del guitarrista Gerrit Fischer. Sopor Aeternus no regresaría a ésta línea sino hasta 2004, 'La Chambre d'Echo'.

Throbbing Gristle - The Third And Final Report

Throbbing Gristle es una banda británica de música experimental e industrial que evolucionó del grupo performance COUM Trnasmissions. Los miembros fundadores de Throbbing Gristle fueron Chris Carter, Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti y Peter Christopherson.

Sus presentaciones en vivo, altamente confrontacionales, solían usar imágenes perturbadoras (incluyendo pornografía y fotos de campos de concentración nazi, dándole al grupo una reputación notable. Sin embargo, el grupo siempre sostuvo que su misión era retar y explorar los lados más oscuros y obsesivos de la condición humana (en vez de hacer música atractiva). Throbbing Gristle fue pionero en el uso de samples pre-grabados y uso de efectos especiales para producir un trasfondo distintivo y altamente distorsionado, usualmente acompañado por letras cantadas o habladas por Genesis P-Orridge.

En 1977 lanzaron su grabación debut, "2nd Annual Report". Aunque inicialmente solo se fabricaron 786 copias en la disquera de la banda, Industrial Records, el álbum tuvo suficiente demanda como para relanzarlo posteriormente. Throbbing Gristle se separó en 1981.

En 2006 la banda terminó la grabación de su primer álbum de estudio en casi 25 años, titulado "Part Two". (Próximamente en línea).

Cabaret Voltaire - Red Mecca

El grupo se formó en Sheffield en 1973. Dedicados a la experimentación en la creación y el procesamiento de sonidos, parecían interesarse más en el sonido en sí mismo que en las propias canciones. Estos tempranos experimentos están documentados en una edición de tres discos compactos llamada "Methodology" (Mute, 2002). En aquella época, ofrecían algunas actuaciones en directo que atraían, generalmente, la hostilidad de las audiencias proletarias de Sheffield. En uno de estos incidentes, Mallinder fue hospitalizado con vértebra astillada después de que el público lanzara objetos contra la banda. Sin embargo, la llegada del Punk rock trajo una audiencia más tolerante y abierta al sonido electrónico e industrial que ellos hacían.


En 1978, Cabaret Voltaire firmaron con la discográfica Rough Trade Records. Con este sello editaron numerosos sencillos musicalmente experimentales que fueron muy aclamados, incluyendo "Extended Play", "Nag Nag Nag", "Three Mantras" y "3 Crepuscule Tracks", y álbumes tales como "The Voice Of America" (1980) y el aclamado "Red Mecca" (1981).

Kirlian Camera - Live in Berlin 2000

El grupo fue fundado en 1980 por Angelo Bergamini, pionero del la escena synthpop Italiana, eventualmente fue él primero grupo italiano en firmar con la casa discográfica Virgin Records.
Entre 1982 y 1984, Bergamini también participó en el grupo italiano Hipnosis, orientado a los géneros spacesynth/italodisco, el cual ganó un disco de platino por ventas en Alemania, tuvieron un éxito número 10 en las listas de popularidad europeas con su sencillo -Pulstar-.

Durante los ochentas, el sonido de Kirlian Camera se volvió progresivamente más obscuro, y evolucionando de el synthpop de sus primeras producciones discográficas.

En 1993, firmaron con la disquera alemana Discordia. En 1995 colaboraron con disqueras más pequeñas como Dive con el EP Obsession. En cuanto a los demás integrantes de la banda, su alineación ha cambiado a lo largo de los años, entrando y saliendo nuevos miembros, pero a partir de 1999 ha sido relativamente estable la mancuerna de Angelo Bergamini como letrista y compositor y la cantante Elena Fossi.
