(That Cigarette)" is a Western swing novelty song written by Merle Travis and Tex Williams, for Williams and his talking blues style of singing. Travis wrote the bulk of the song. The original Williams version went to number one for sixteen, non-consecutive weeks on the Hot Country Songs chart. Recorded on March 27, 1947 at Radio Recorders in Hollywood, "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)" was produced by Lee Gillette, and featured Deuce Spriggens, bass fiddle, harmony vocal; Larry "Pedro" DePaul, accordion; Johnny Weis, lead guitar; Cactus Soldi, Rex Call, Harry Sims, fiddler; Ossie Godson, piano; Spike Featherstone, harp; Earl "Joaquin" Murphey, steel guitar; Manny Klein, trumpet; Smokey Rogers, guitar, harmony vocal; Muddy Berry, drums. The song can be heard in the opening of the 2006 film, Thank You for Smoking, as well as in the 2011 video game, L.A. Noire, which was set in late 1940s Los Angeles. Tex Williams
Sollie Paul Williams (August 23, 1917 – October 11, 1985), known professionally as Tex Williams, was an American Western swing musician from Ramsey, Illinois. He is best known for his talking blues style; his biggest hit was the novelty song, "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)", which held the number one position on the Billboard charts for sixteen weeks in 1947. "Smoke" was the No. 5 song on Billboard's Top 100 list for 1947, and was No. 1 on the country chart that year. It can be heard during the opening credits of the 2006 movie Thank You for Smoking.
Life and career
Williams started out in the early 1940s as vocalist for the band of Western Swing king Spade Cooley, based in Venice, California.
Williams' backing band The Western Caravan numbered about a dozen members. They attained an enviable level of fluid interplay between electric and steel guitars, fiddles, bass, accordion, trumpet, and other instruments (even an occasional harp). At first they recorded polkas for Capitol Records with limited success. That was changed by the success of "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke" written in large part by Merle Travis.

Smoke
Smoke is a collection of airborne solid and liquid particulates and gases emitted when a material undergoes combustion or pyrolysis, together with the quantity of air that is entrained or otherwise mixed into the mass. It is commonly an unwanted by-product of fires (including stoves, candles, oil lamps, and fireplaces), but may also be used for pest control (fumigation), communication (smoke signals), defensive and offensive capabilities in the military (smoke-screen), cooking, or smoking (tobacco, cannabis, etc.). Smoke is used in rituals where incense, sage, or resin is burned to produce a smell for spiritual purposes. Smoke is sometimes used as a flavoring agent, and preservative for various foodstuffs. Smoke is also a component of internal combustion engine exhaust gas, particularly diesel exhaust.
Smoke inhalation is the primary cause of death in victims of indoor fires. The smoke kills by a combination of thermal damage, poisoning and pulmonary irritation caused by carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and other combustion products.

Spade Cooley
Donnell Clyde Cooley (December 17, 1910 – November 23, 1969), better known as Spade Cooley, was an American Western swing musician, big band leader, actor, and television personality. His career ended in 1961 when he was arrested and convicted for the murder of his second wife, Ella Mae Evans.
Biography
"Spade" Cooley was born Donnell Clyde Cooley on December 17, 1910, in Grand, Oklahoma. Being part Cherokee, he was sent to the Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon to be educated. Around 1930 his family fled the Dust Bowl for California.
Music career
One of the groups which played at the Venice Pier Ballroom in Venice, California, was led by Jimmy Wakely with Spade Cooley on fiddle. Several thousand dancers would turn out on Saturday night to swing and hop. "The hoards (sic) of people and jitterbuggers loved him." When Wakely got a movie contract at Universal, Cooley replaced him as bandleader.
To capitalize on the pioneering success of the Bob Wills–Tommy Duncan pairing, Cooley hired vocalist Tex Williams who was capable of the mellow deep baritone sound made popular by Duncan. Cooley's 18-month engagement at Santa Monica's Venice Pier Ballroom was record-breaking for the early half of the 1940s. His "Shame on You", released on Columbia's Okeh label, was recorded in December 1944, and was No. 1 on the country charts for two months. A Red Foley / Lawrence Welk collaboration issued by Decca (18698) was No. 4 to Cooley's No. 5 on Billboard's "Most Played Juke Box Folk Records" listing in September 1945. Soundies Distributing Corp. of America issued one of their "music video like" film shorts of Cooley's band titled "Shame on You" in the fall of 1945. "Shame on You" was the first in an unbroken string of six Top Ten singles including "Detour" and "You Can't Break My Heart".

He performed "Hey Good Lookin'" and joined in with the rest of the cast singing his own "I Saw The Light". The Kinescope from this show would provide the footage for the "There's A Tear In My Beer" video some 37 years later.

Joaquin Murphey 1976 solo Steel Guitar LP
This is one of Joaquin's solo LPs recorded Aug 24 1976.His playing here is quite different from his Spade Cooley or Tex Williams days in the mid to late 1940s.He is still able to play some nice things but is not the virtuoso that he once was.He did write several of these songs and they are pretty good.Overall I found this LP takes some getting use too, but is very enjoyable after you hear it a few times.The sound is "very 1976 Nashville sounding" which is not the best way to listen to music. This is one of Joaquin's solo LPs recorded Aug 24 1976.His playing here is quite different from his Spade Cooley or Tex Williams days in the mid to late 1940s.He is still able to play some nice things but is not the virtuoso that he once was.He did write several of these songs and they are pretty good.Overall I found this LP takes some getting use too, but is very enjoyable after you hear it a few times.The sound is "very 1976 Nashville sounding" which is not the best way to listen to music.

“Singing cowboys didn’t make all of the music in the ‘B’ westerns of the 1930s and 1940s. Top Western Swing artists such as Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, Spade Cooley, the Light Crust Doughboys, Patsy Montana, Carolina Cotton, Tex Williams, Andy Parker and the Plainsmen, the Texas Rangers and others were regularly featured as added attractions in such films and turned in many classic performances. In this way, without even trying to, Hollywood documented the golden age of Western Swing for future generations to enjoy, and preserved many songs and band line-ups that went unrecorded during the two ‘Petrillo Bans’ of the 1940s. This presentation features rare film clips all of the artists named above and more.”
MATTHEW BARTON has worked at the Library of Congress since 2003, first as a sound engineer and archivist, and since 2008, as the Curator of Recorded Sound at the Library’s Packard Campus for Audiovisual Conservation in Culpeper, Virginia. From 1996 to 2003, he was the production coordinator of the Alan Lomax Collection compact disc series issued by Rounder Records. He has written extensively on recorded music and sound, and is a contributor to the book The Ballad Collectors of North America: How Gathering Folksong Transformed Academic Thought and American Identity, published in 2012 by Scarecrow Press. Barton currently serves as President of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections.
