Nation Seeking Student Writing Fellows

The Nation is accepting applications for two Student Writing Fellows. This year-long program will give two college students the opportunity to regularly write for TheNation.com and to work with Nation staff members to sharpen the skills needed for a successful career in journalism.

Fellows should be familiar with The Nation and have a passion for politics. They will contribute 2-3 articles per month, and will be expected to both pitch ideas and write on assignment. Fellows will write on a range of subjects covered by The Nation, with an emphasis on how young people are navigating and combating new and unprecedented obstacles in the age of Donald Trump. Coverage of social movements and protest is always essential–especially now–and the perspective and analysis of the next generation of independent thinkers is more critical than ever.

REQUIREMENTS
The fellowship will run from May 15, 2017 to April 30, 2018. In addition to contributing 2-3 articles each month, fellows will consult on Nation student conferences and contests and act as Nation ambassadors. Fellows work remotely from their own campuses. Fellows will receive a $10,000 annual stipend, paid in 12 equal monthly payments.

APPLICATION
Applicants must submit the following:
1. A cover letter of not-more-than 500 words telling us why you want to become a StudentNation Writing Fellow.
2. A resume.
3. One published piece of journalism. A link is fine.
4. Two references. (We just want contact info, no letters necessary.)
5. Two 1-2 paragraph story ideas. What would you write about this month if you were a Fellow?

Applications will be accepted until noon EST on Friday, April 7. Application materials should be in Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) format and should be emailed to studentfellow@thenation.com.  Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants will be informed of their status by May 1. 

ELIGIBILITY
All matriculating undergraduate students at all two and four year schools in the US due to graduate in 2018 or after. (Current juniors and younger.)  Email studentfellow@thenation.com with questions.
