SPGB 2008 Summer School: On Religion

Did socialists assume that the progress science has made in explaining our world would push out religious beliefs? Instead the 21st century has seen religion become even more of a prominent issue.Whether it is the role of Islam in Britain, sectarian conflicts in the Middle East, or the ongoing battle between creationism and evolutionary theory, religion is always in the news.

Our weekend of talks and discussion will explore socialist views on the impact of religion in society.

How does faith relate to other aspects of capitalism, such as laws and relations between countries?

How does a religious outlook differ from a socialst or humanist one?

Can you be a socialist and have religious beliefs?

As always the venue for Summer School is Fircroft College, which offers excellent facilities within easy reach of Birmingham city centre.

Karl Kautsky and the Socialist Critique of Religion

Another talk in the 1982 'Socialist Thinkers – People Who History Made' lecture series. Once again, the speaker/lecturer is Steve Coleman.

Don't mind the accompanying picture for the post. Thought I'd indulge myself by using the front cover of Dick Geary's 1987 biography of Kautsky that was published as part of the 'Lives of the Left' series.

Those were the days . . . when I used to read books.

The Little Black Book of Religion

Via Alan J's blog - who got it from someone else - a wee factoid about the wrath of that bloke who looks like Jerry Garcia.

Also looks like Satan is misunderstood (or just crap at his job). Maybe he can get Matthew Freud to do some PR for him to turn around his image.
