A Literary Auction to Benefit Planned Parenthood

Feeling hopeless? Helpless? Frustrated and furious at the way women’s health care is under attack?

So are we.

So we decided to get some of our writer friends together to raise some money for an organization that is very close to our hearts: Planned Parenthood of the Mid-Hudson Valley.

What: Books. Good books. Books which – let’s be honest – you wanted to read anyway. But these books…these books are special. In honor of Planned Parenthood’s 101st year of operation, we’ve asked our authors to do a little something special on page 101. Cartoons, writing tips, behind-the-scenes thoughts: nowhere else but at WH101. (there are a few exceptions – noted in the item descriptions.)

Anthony Bourdain’s ‘Parts Unknown’ at Squirrel Hill Cafe

Ms. Oliverio, who owns the Squirrel Hill Cafe with her husband Rod, said that Mr. Bourdain was there from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. She said the filming mostly consisted of Mr. Bourdain talking with local author Stewart O’Nan, who apparently recommended that Mr. Bourdain check out the Squirrel Hill institution.

“He was trying to get into iconic Pittsburgh,” Ms. Oliverio said. “So [O’Nan] said, ‘You have to go to the Squirrel Hill Café. It’s my favorite bar.’”

Join us on June 8 at 6:30 pm for Meet the Author with Stewart O’Nan. Stewart O’Nan’s award-winning fiction includes Snow Angels, A Prayer for the Dying, Last Night at the Lobster, and Emily, Alone. He lives in Pittsburgh.

Stewart O’Nan’s most recent publication, City of Secrets, is a timely moral thriller of the Jewish underground resistance in Jerusalem after the Second World War. In 1945, with no homes to return to, Jewish refugees by the tens of thousands set out for Palestine. Those who made it were hunted as illegals by the British mandatory authorities there and relied on the underground to shelter them; taking fake names, they blended with the population, joining the wildly different factions fighting for the independence of Israel.
