From GIANT Buddhas to giant library heads to Peter the Great to many more...these are the 15 BIGGEST Statues in the world.
This surreal statue looks like a giant bust of a man that has a block instead of a face, and although it looks just like a stunning piece of public art, there is actually more to this statue than meets the eye. The 81 foot tall La Tete Carrée is also a functioning library. Inside that big old blockhead is three floors of books that anyone can get inside and check out! To visit the square head library, you just have to make it out to Nice, France.
At the foot of the Batu Caves in Selangor, Malaysia stands one of the tallest statues of a Hindu deity in the world. It stands 140 feet tall and was made from more than 1550 pounds of concrete, 350 tons of steel and 300 liters of gold paint.

This statue was built in the Henan province to the honor of the Chinese Emperors Yan and Huang. Construction was started in 1987 and took 20 years to complete. The Chinese Government spent the equivalent of $22.5 million US dollars on the construction of this 347-foot tall statue.

6 - The Travellers
These Bronze statues are the sculpted works of French artist Bruno Catalano who says the missing sections of their bodies represent a world citizen who travels to different places and leaves a portion of themselves wherever they go. These unique sculptures will often cause double takes and invite the viewers to literally fill in the blanks. Bruno's work has been hailed as existential and a masterful play on negative space. The introspective often uncertain expressions lingering on those bronze facial features as well as the usual suitcase drifting on a weathered extended hand all tie into his theme of a traveller gathering perspective on the places he has visited and left. The missing mid sections make these statutes appear to be suspended in mid air which is both eye catching as well as thought provoking. Bruno has been sculpting for over 20 years, ten of these life sized statues can be found in Marseilles France, with many more artistic creations available on his personal website.
5 - Digital Orca
From the the creative mind of Douglas Coupland this beautiful yet bizarre sculpture meant to look digital was commissioned by the city of Vancouver Canada to overlook the harbor and mountains of the Cypress Provincial Park. This unique piece of water street art is comprised of steel armature with aluminum cladding and black and white cubes the piece is meant to represent Douglas's vision of life in our digitized times.
4 - Fading Literacy
The state library is a historical landmark located inside the heart of Victoria in Melbourne Australia. This curious sculpture was commissioned by the local council to help expand the city's art programs. Some say this conceptual sculpture is meant to represent the crushing weight of knowledge which college students are expected to learn. Others contend this piece represents the fact that no one reads anymore and libraries are quickly becoming a fading fad from the past. Several smirking students now say the books were too heavy which caused the library to sink.
3 - Metalmorphosis
This strikingly beautiful conceptual sculpture was commissioned by the American Asset Corporation and sculpted by David Cerny. The 14-ton piece of permanant art was created using stainless steel layers grouped into seven segments which all independently rotate 360 degrees which occasionally align to create this massive looking head which squirts water from its massive mouth into the pool below. The artist has called this work, a psychological self-portrait, the whole crazy cool sculpture can be found in Charlotte North Carolina. The sculpture has a webcam attached to it, many believe that this camera is meant to provide social commentary against the constant surveillance of our modern culture.
2 - Nelson Mandela
You can find this dazzling sculpture near Howick in South Africa, the piece was commissioned by Cultural Mechanics and sculpted by artist Marco Cianfanelli. The stunning interconnecting piece of street art is positioned along R103 road, where Mandela was arrested and held captive for 27 years in 1962. Nelson Mandela has worn many hats, he has been called a revolutionary, worked as a politician, made fame as a philanthropist and even served as President of South Africa, he was a well known nationalist and socialist who deeply cared about his country and the people who lived within it, he even earned the Nobel Peace prize. The front of the sculpture is a literal portrait of Mandela, the vertical bars represent his imprisonment. When you pass through the structure the light is said to project and radiate as it travels through the shadows creating bursts of bright reflections, this is meant to symbolize political uprisings and solidarity.
1 - Shoes on the Danube Bank
Conceived by Hungarian film director Can Togay and sculpted by Hungarian artist Gyula Pauer this haunting collection of statues of shoes is a memorial to honor all who were killed on this river bank, mostly Budapest Jews, during World War II. Most of these unfortunates were ordered to take off their shoes before being executed at the edge of the Danube river, in all, the 60 cast in iron pairs of shoe statues are meant to honor 3,500 people, 800 of them Jews who lost their lives to the Arrow Cross fascist reign of terror. The shoes are attached to a stone embankment and a sign behind them reads, to the memory of the victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944-1945. April 2005. The monument is located on the Pest side of the Danube Promenade inside Budapest Hungary.

Fun

These unique sculptures will often cause double takes and invite the viewers to literally fill in the blanks. Bruno's work has been hailed as existential and a masterful play on negative space. The introspective often uncertain expressions lingering on those bronze facial features as well as the usual suitcase drifting on a weathered extended hand all tie into his theme of a traveller gathering perspective on the places he has visited and left. The missing mid sections make these statutes appear to be suspended in mid air which is both eye catching as well as thought provoking. Bruno has been sculpting for over 20 years, ten of these life sized statues can be found in Marseilles France, with many more artistic creations available on his personal website. 5 - Digital Orca From the the creative mind of Douglas Coupland this beautiful yet bizarre sculpture meant to look digital was commissioned by the city of Vancouver Canada to overlook the harbor and mountains of the Cypress Provincial Park. This unique piece of water street art is comprised of steel armature with aluminum cladding and black and white cubes the piece is meant to represent Douglas's vision of life in our digitized times. 4 - Fading Literacy The state library is a historical landmark located inside the heart of Victoria in Melbourne Australia. This curious sculpture was commissioned by the local council to help expand the city's art programs. Some say this conceptual sculpture is meant to represent the crushing weight of knowledge which college students are expected to learn. Others contend this piece represents the fact that no one reads anymore and libraries are quickly becoming a fading fad from the past. Several smirking students now say the books were too heavy which caused the library to sink. 3 - Metalmorphosis This strikingly beautiful conceptual sculpture was commissioned by the American Asset Corporation and sculpted by David Cerny. The 14-ton piece of permanant art was created using stainless steel layers grouped into seven segments which all independently rotate 360 degrees which occasionally align to create this massive looking head which squirts water from its massive mouth into the pool below. The artist has called this work, a psychological self-portrait, the whole crazy cool sculpture can be found in Charlotte North Carolina. The sculpture has a webcam attached to it, many believe that this camera is meant to provide social commentary against the constant surveillance of our modern culture. 2 - Nelson Mandela You can find this dazzling sculpture near Howick in South Africa, the piece was commissioned by Cultural Mechanics and sculpted by artist Marco Cianfanelli. The stunning interconnecting piece of street art is positioned along R103 road, where Mandela was arrested and held captive for 27 years in 1962. Nelson Mandela has worn many hats, he has been called a revolutionary, worked as a politician, made fame as a philanthropist and even served as President of South Africa, he was a well known nationalist and socialist who deeply cared about his country and the people who lived within it, he even earned the Nobel Peace prize. The front of the sculpture is a literal portrait of Mandela, the vertical bars represent his imprisonment. When you pass through the structure the light is said to project and radiate as it travels through the shadows creating bursts of bright reflections, this is meant to symbolize political uprisings and solidarity. 1 - Shoes on the Danube Bank Conceived by Hungarian film director Can Togay and sculpted by Hungarian artist Gyula Pauer this haunting collection of statues of shoes is a memorial to honor all who were killed on this river bank, mostly Budapest Jews, during World War II. Most of these unfortunates were ordered to take off their shoes before being executed at the edge of the Danube river, in all, the 60 cast in iron pairs of shoe statues are meant to honor 3,500 people, 800 of them Jews who lost their lives to the Arrow Cross fascist reign of terror. The shoes are attached to a stone embankment and a sign behind them reads, to the memory of the victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944-1945. April 2005. The monument is located on the Pest side of the Danube Promenade inside Budapest Hungary. -

The Statue of Liberty is an iconic statue sitting on Liberty Island right outside New York City. That name is actually a nickname, it’s official name is Liberty Enlightening the World. It was built by the French and given to the United States in 1886 to celebrate American Independence from the British.
This dynamic statue stands above a cliff in Manado City, Indonesia. It was thought up by Ciputra, an Indian real estate developer. It took over 3 years and $540,000 US dollars to build this huge statue. It stands at a total of 158 feet including its steel pedestal. It is one of the tallest statue of Jesus in the world.
The African Renaissance Monument is a 49-meter tall bronze statue situated on top of a hill known as Collines des Mamelles right outside Dakar, Senegal. It was built overlooking at the Atlantic Ocean and designed by Senegalese resident Pierre Goudiaby and the president Abdoulaye Wade but was actually constructed by North Korean company Mansudae Overseas Projects. It was completed in 2010 and celebrated the 50th anniversary of Senegal gaining independence from France. It is currently the tallest statue in Africa.
The Motherland Calls statue was built to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II. It’s built in the city of Volgograd in Russia. It was built using more than 7900 metric tonnes of concrete and was presented in 1967.
The Great Buddha of Thailand is the tallest statue in the country, standing at 302 feet high and 210 feet wide. It is completely constructed out of concrete and covered in gold paint. It took 18 years to build and the temple it’s connected to is home to “Hell Park” which is a group of statues that graphically depict the hellish fate that awaits any sinners in the afterlife.
This is tall statue appropriately commemorating one of the tallest rulers in history. Peter the Great stood at around 6’6” and this statue stands at 321 feet. The 1,000-ton statue was erected in 1997 to commemorate 300 years of the Russian Navy which Peter the Great established. 6 - The Travellers
These Bronze statues are the sculpted works of French artist Bruno Catalano who says the missing sections of their bodies represent a world citizen who travels to different places and leaves a portion of themselves wherever they go. These unique sculptures will often cause double takes and invite the viewers to literally fill in the blanks. Bruno's work has been hailed as existential and a masterful play on negative space. The introspective often uncertain expressions lingering on those bronze facial features as well as the usual suitcase drifting on a weathered extended hand all tie into his theme of a traveller gathering perspective on the places he has visited and left. The missing mid sections make these statutes appear to be suspended in mid air which is both eye catching as well as thought provoking. Bruno has been sculpting for over 20 years, ten of these life sized statues can be found in Marseilles France, with many more artistic creations available on his personal website.
5 - Digital Orca
From the the creative mind of Douglas Coupland this beautiful yet bizarre sculpture meant to look digital was commissioned by the city of Vancouver Canada to overlook the harbor and mountains of the Cypress Provincial Park. This unique piece of water street art is comprised of steel armature with aluminum cladding and black and white cubes the piece is meant to represent Douglas's vision of life in our digitized times.
4 - Fading Literacy
The state library is a historical landmark located inside the heart of Victoria in Melbourne Australia. This curious sculpture was commissioned by the local council to help expand the city's art programs. Some say this conceptual sculpture is meant to represent the crushing weight of knowledge which college students are expected to learn. Others contend this piece represents the fact that no one reads anymore and libraries are quickly becoming a fading fad from the past. Several smirking students now say the books were too heavy which caused the library to sink.
3 - Metalmorphosis
This strikingly beautiful conceptual sculpture was commissioned by the American Asset Corporation and sculpted by David Cerny. The 14-ton piece of permanant art was created using stainless steel layers grouped into seven segments which all independently rotate 360 degrees which occasionally align to create this massive looking head which squirts water from its massive mouth into the pool below. The artist has called this work, a psychological self-portrait, the whole crazy cool sculpture can be found in Charlotte North Carolina. The sculpture has a webcam attached to it, many believe that this camera is meant to provide social commentary against the constant surveillance of our modern culture.
2 - Nelson Mandela
You can find this dazzling sculpture near Howick in South Africa, the piece was commissioned by Cultural Mechanics and sculpted by artist Marco Cianfanelli. The stunning interconnecting piece of street art is positioned along R103 road, where Mandela was arrested and held captive for 27 years in 1962. Nelson Mandela has worn many hats, he has been called a revolutionary, worked as a politician, made fame as a philanthropist and even served as President of South Africa, he was a well known nationalist and socialist who deeply cared about his country and the people who lived within it, he even earned the Nobel Peace prize. The front of the sculpture is a literal portrait of Mandela, the vertical bars represent his imprisonment. When you pass through the structure the light is said to project and radiate as it travels through the shadows creating bursts of bright reflections, this is meant to symbolize political uprisings and solidarity.

Conceived by Hungarian film director Can Togay and sculpted by Hungarian artist Gyula Pauer this haunting collection of statues of shoes is a memorial to honor all who were killed on this river bank, mostly Budapest Jews, during World War II. Most of these unfortunates were ordered to take off their shoes before being executed at the edge of the Danube river, in all, the 60 cast in iron pairs of shoe statues are meant to honor 3,500 people, 800 of them Jews who lost their lives to the Arrow Cross fascist reign of terror. The shoes are attached to a stone embankment and a sign behind them reads, to the memory of the victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944-1945. April 2005. The monument is located on the Pest side of the Danube Promenade inside Budapest Hungary.
