Part of my day 1 adventures with Yuosef Awyani, we went to the Temple of Abu Sir. It was an awesome experience to have the whole place to ourselves after dark.
Sadly my camera died shortly after we got there. We followed this up with a stroll across the desert to Abu Ghourab. I highly recommend both places, you will very much enjoy being there!

Profane and sacred: on landscape properties, symbolical monumental architecture and social change of Abusir and Saqara necropoleis during the Old Kingdom
The main purpose of this contribution will be to show the close relationship and ways of interaction of profane landscape and symbolical aspects of ancient Egyptian kingship, symbolical monumental architecture, administration and religion. By using several examples based on the evidence provided by the Abusir excavations, I will indicate how ancient Egyptians used the landscape properties, historical and sacred places imbued with symbolical meaning for the kingship to achieve politically motivated objectives.
The chosen examples will focus on the location of the Lake of Abusir as a sacred gate to the Abusir-Saqqara necropolis associated with the notion of rebirth and resurrection and architectural features characterizing pyramid fields that were designed to ensure (not only, however) explicit manifestation of political goals of the current ruling elite.

Delicately brushing away the dust and then hoisting off a heavy limestone cover, archaeologists in Egypt on Friday uncovered the mummified body of a Pharaonic palace chief thought to be more than 2,400 years old.
The encased mummy was found at the end of a long tunnel at Abu Sir, 12 miles (20 kilometres) south of Cairo.
It's only the third sealed tomb uncovered in Egypt and while no treasures were found with the sarcophagus, the find is thought to be important.
It's believed it could shed light on burial practices and religious beliefs in the early Persian period of Egyptian history,
Beneath the sands and the Saqqara pyramids at Abu Sir lies the tomb of Iufaa.
It was discovered in 1996 by a team from the Czech Institute of Egyptology but the sarcophagus inside has lain untouched - until now..
On hand to witness the unveiling were the Egyptian Minister of Culture, as well as senior antiquities officials.
The sarcophagus was discovered when the tomb was unearthed, but it was left alone because conditions in the shaft were dangerous.
Now the walls of the 28 metre tunnel into the sands have been reinforced, letting Egyptian and Czech archaeologists uncover the hidden treasures of Abu Sir.
Gently brushing away sand and dirt so the lid could be lifted, the 2,400 year old mummy was finally revealed.
While no treasures were with the coffin, the find is thought to be important because of the details it could yield about a little known period in Egyptian history.

The tomb is also important because it's 50 years since a similar intact burial of this type has been discovered and only the third in Egypt's history.
The walls of the tomb and the sarcophagus are of special interest, because they are covered with hieroglyphs which repeat the spells and invocation prayers of the ancient pyramid texts that earlier had been reserved only for the tombs of Old Kingdom rulers.

Abusir (Egyptian pr wsjr; busiri, the House or Temple of Osiris; Greek: Βούσιρις; Arabic: ابوصير) is the name given to an Egyptian archaeological locality -- specifically, an extensive necropolis of the Old Kingdom period, together with later additions -- in the vicinity of the modern capital Cairo. The name is also that of a neighbouring village in the Nile Valley, from whence the site takes its name. Abusir is located several kilometres north of Saqqara and, like it, served as one of the main elite cemeteries for the ancient Egyptian capital city of Memphis. Several other villages in northern and southern Egypt are named Abusir or Busiri.
Abusir is one relatively small segment of the extensive "pyramid field" that extends from north of Giza to below Saqqara, the locality of Abusir took its turn as the focus of the prestigious western burial rites operating out of the then-capital of Memphis during the Old Kingdom 5th Dynasty. As an elite cemetery, neighbouring Giza had by then "filled up" with the massive pyramids and other monuments of the 4th Dynasty, leading the 5th Dynasty pharaohs to seek sites elsewhere for their own funerary monuments.
Abusir was the origin of the largest find of Old Kingdom papyri to date — the Abusir Papyri. In the late nineteenth century, a number of Western museums acquired collections of fragmentary papyri from the administrative (temple) records of one Abusir funerary cult, that of king Neferirkare Kakai. This discovery was supplemented in the late twentieth century when excavations by a Czech expedition to the site revealed papyri from two other cult complexes, that of the pharaoh Neferefre (also read Raneferef) and for the king's mother Khentkaus II.
There are considerable catacombs near the ancient town of Busiris (Pliny xxxvi. 12. s. 16). To the south of Busiris one great cemetery appears to have stretched over the plain. The Heptanomite Busiris was in fact a hamlet standing at one extremity of the necropolis of Memphis.
There are a total of 14 pyramids at this site, which served as the main royal necropolis during the Fifth dynasty. The quality of construction of the Abusir pyramids is inferior to those of the Fourth Dynasty; perhaps signalling a decrease in royal power or a less vibrant economy. They are smaller than their predecessors, and are built of low quality local stone.
The three major pyramids are those of Nyuserre Ini (which is also the most intact), Neferirkare and Sahure. The site is also home to the incomplete Pyramid of Neferefre. All of the major pyramids at Abusir were built as step pyramids, although the largest of them — the Pyramid of Neferirkare — is believed to have originally been built as a step pyramid some seventy metres in height and then later transformed into a "true" pyramid by having its steps filled in with loose masonry.

Fifth Dynasty of Egypt
The Fifth Dynasty of ancient Egypt (notated Dynasty V) is often combined with Dynasties III, IV and VI under the group title the Old Kingdom. The Fifth Dynasty dates approximately from 2494 to 2345 BC.
Rulers
Known rulers in the Fifth Dynasty are listed below. The pharaohs of this dynasty ruled for approximately 150 years. The Horus names and most names of the Queens are taken from Dodson and Hilton.
Manetho writes that the Dynasty V kings ruled from Elephantine, but archeologists have found evidence clearly showing that their palaces were still located at Ineb-hedj ("White Walls").
As before, expeditions were sent to Wadi Maghareh and Wadi Kharit in the Sinai to mine for turquoise and copper, and to quarries northwest of Abu Simbel for gneiss. Trade expeditions were sent south to Punt to obtain malachite, myrrh, and electrum, and archeological finds at Byblos attest to diplomatic expeditions sent to that Phoenician city. Finds bearing the names of several Dynasty V kings at the site of Dorak, near the Sea of Marmara, may be evidence of trade but remain a mystery.

Old Kingdom of Egypt
The Old Kingdom is the name given to the period in the 3rd millennium BC when Egypt attained its first continuous peak of civilization – the first of three so-called "Kingdom" periods, which mark the high points of civilization in the lower Nile Valley (the others being Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom). The term itself was coined by eighteenth-century historians and the distinction between the Old Kingdom and the Early Dynastic Period is not one which would have been recognized by Ancient Egyptians. Not only was the last king of the Early Dynastic Period related to the first two kings of the Old Kingdom, but the 'capital', the royal residence, remained at Ineb-Hedg, the Ancient Egyptian name for Memphis. The basic justification for a separation between the two periods is the revolutionary change in architecture accompanied by the effects on Egyptian society and economy of large-scale building projects.
The Old Kingdom is most commonly regarded as the period from the Third Dynasty through to the Sixth Dynasty (2686–2181 BC). Many Egyptologists also include the Memphite Seventh and Eighth Dynasties in the Old Kingdom as a continuation of the administration centralized at Memphis. While the Old Kingdom was a period of internal security and prosperity, it was followed by a period of disunity and relative cultural decline referred to by Egyptologists as the First Intermediate Period. During the Old Kingdom, the king of Egypt (not called the Pharaoh until the New Kingdom) became a living god who ruled absolutely and could demand the services and wealth of his subjects. The numerous references to the Old Kingdom kings as pharaohs in this article stems from the ubiquitous use of the term "pharaoh" to describe any and all Ancient Egyptian Kings.

Sadly my camera died shortly after we got there. We followed this up with a stroll across the desert to Abu Ghourab. I highly recommend both places, you will very much enjoy being there!

Profane and sacred: on landscape properties, symbolical monumental architecture and social change of Abusir and Saqara necropoleis during the Old Kingdom
The main purpose of this contribution will be to show the close relationship and ways of interaction of profane landscape and symbolical aspects of ancient Egyptian kingship, symbolical monumental architecture, administration and religion. By using several examples based on the evidence provided by the Abusir excavations, I will indicate how ancient Egyptians used the landscape properties, historical and sacred places imbued with symbolical meaning for the kingship to achieve politically motivated objectives.
The chosen examples will focus on the location of the Lake of Abusir as a sacred gate to the Abusir-Saqqara necropolis associated with the notion of rebirth and resurrection and architectural features characterizing pyramid fields that were designed to ensure (not only, however) explicit manifestation of political goals of the current ruling elite.

It's only the third sealed tomb uncovered in Egypt and while no treasures were found with the sarcophagus, the find is thought to be important.
It's believed it could shed light on burial practices and religious beliefs in the early Persian period of Egyptian history,
Beneath the sands and the Saqqara pyramids at Abu Sir lies the tomb of Iufaa.
It was discovered in 1996 by a team from the Czech Institute of Egyptology but the sarcophagus inside has lain untouched - until now..
On hand to witness the unveiling were the Egyptian Minister of Culture, as well as senior antiquities officials.
The sarcophagus was discovered when the tomb was unearthed, but it was left alone because conditions in the shaft were dangerous.
Now the walls of the 28 metre tunnel into the sands have been reinforced, letting Egyptian and Czech archaeologists uncover the hidden treasures of Abu Sir.
Gently brushing away sand and dirt so the lid could be lifted, the 2,400 year old mummy was finally revealed.
While no treasures were with the coffin, the find is thought to be important because of the details it could yield about a little known period in Egyptian history.

Iufaa that really is one of the tombs in the cemetery of the 26th
dynasty with the rebirth of Egyptian civilization, because this
period they imitated art of the old kingdom, the middle kingdom and
the new kingdom; and this person was an important person, was the
one in charge of the palace of the king and this is why we always
believe that we never know what the sands of Egypt might hide of
secrets; this is the most new secret that has been discovered in
Egypt."

The tomb is also important because it's 50 years since a similar intact burial of this type has been discovered and only the third in Egypt's history.
The walls of the tomb and the sarcophagus are of special interest, because they are covered with hieroglyphs which repeat the spells and invocation prayers of the ancient pyramid texts that earlier had been reserved only for the tombs of Old Kingdom rulers.

The name is also that of a neighbouring village in the Nile Valley, from whence the site takes its name. Abusir is located several kilometres north of Saqqara and, like it, served as one of the main elite cemeteries for the ancient Egyptian capital city of Memphis. Several other villages in northern and southern Egypt are named Abusir or Busiri.
Abusir is one relatively small segment of the extensive "pyramid field" that extends from north of Giza to below Saqqara, the locality of Abusir took its turn as the focus of the prestigious western burial rites operating out of the then-capital of Memphis during the Old Kingdom 5th Dynasty. As an elite cemetery, neighbouring Giza had by then "filled up" with the massive pyramids and other monuments of the 4th Dynasty, leading the 5th Dynasty pharaohs to seek sites elsewhere for their own funerary monuments.
Abusir was the origin of the largest find of Old Kingdom papyri to date — the Abusir Papyri. In the late nineteenth century, a number of Western museums acquired collections of fragmentary papyri from the administrative (temple) records of one Abusir funerary cult, that of king Neferirkare Kakai. This discovery was supplemented in the late twentieth century when excavations by a Czech expedition to the site revealed papyri from two other cult complexes, that of the pharaoh Neferefre (also read Raneferef) and for the king's mother Khentkaus II.
There are considerable catacombs near the ancient town of Busiris (Pliny xxxvi. 12. s. 16). To the south of Busiris one great cemetery appears to have stretched over the plain. The Heptanomite Busiris was in fact a hamlet standing at one extremity of the necropolis of Memphis.
There are a total of 14 pyramids at this site, which served as the main royal necropolis during the Fifth dynasty. The quality of construction of the Abusir pyramids is inferior to those of the Fourth Dynasty; perhaps signalling a decrease in royal power or a less vibrant economy. They are smaller than their predecessors, and are built of low quality local stone.
The three major pyramids are those of Nyuserre Ini (which is also the most intact), Neferirkare and Sahure. The site is also home to the incomplete Pyramid of Neferefre. All of the major pyramids at Abusir were built as step pyramids, although the largest of them — the Pyramid of Neferirkare — is believed to have originally been built as a step pyramid some seventy metres in height and then later transformed into a "true" pyramid by having its steps filled in with loose masonry.

NASA has announced that “portals” do indeed appear to be hidden within the Earth’s magnetic field, making some wonder if the legends of stargates, portals and wormholes may have some degree of truth to them.
10. Gate Of The Gods, Hayu Marca, Peru
In 1996, it was discovered by Jose Luis Delgado Mamani while he was trying to learn the layout of the area for a job he had recently taken as a tour guide. The “Gate of the Gods” at Hayu Marca in Peru is said by native tribes to have once acted as a “gateway to the land of the Gods.”
Mamani even claims that he had dreams of the doorway for years before he had accidentally found it. In his dream, Mamani stated that the pathway leading to the doorway was made of pink marble, and had also witnessed a smaller door that was open with a “brilliant blue light coming from what looked like a shimmering tunnel.”
The “doorway” is actually two doorways, almost in a “T” shape. The larger doorway measures seven meters wide and seven meters high (22 ft by 22 ft) while the smaller one stands two meters high (6.5 ft) in the middle of the base. Legends state that the larger door is for the gods, themselves. The smaller door is for mortals to pass through, and some heroic mortals did, becoming immortal themselves to live among the gods.
One legend of a mortal passing through the doorway appears to lend a little credibility to Mamani’s alleged dream. The story says that when Spanish explorers arrived in Peru in the 16th century, looting Inca riches as they went, an Incan priest named Amaru Maru fled his temple with a valuable golden disk—“The Key of the Gods of the Seven Rays.” Amaru Maru found the doorway and saw it was guarded by Shaman priests.
He presented to them the golden disk, and following a ritual performed by the priests, the smaller doorway opened. Behind it was a tunnel that shone with great blue light. Amaru Maru passed into the doorway, left the disk with the Shaman priests, and vanished from Earth to the land of the gods.
Interestingly, investigators did discover a small, round, indention in the rock on the right hand column of the smaller doorway. The examinations led them to believe that should a disk shaped object be “inserted” into the indention, it would be held in place by the surrounding rock.
9. Abu Ghurab, Egypt, The Place Of The Gods
The Abu Sir Pyramids, site of Abu Ghurab, has claimed to be one of the oldest sites on the planet. Within Abu Ghurab, lies an ancient platform made of alabaster (Egyptian crystal) and is said to be in tune with the “vibration” of Earth. It can also “open the senses” in order for a person to communicate and “be one” with higher, sacred energies of the Universe. Essentially, it is a stargate and the sacred energies were the Neters (gods).
Interestingly, legends of their communication and way of travel between their world and ours almost mirrors the legends of the Cherokee Native Americans. The Cherokee tell of how “thought beings”—who are formless—would travel on a “wave of sound” from their home in the Pleiades Star System to Earth.
As the legends of Abu Ghurab being a stargate, there are also signs of what some would perceive to be advanced technology having been used to create the site. One example is the perfectly precise circular markings that have been drilled into the alabaster.

The story says that when Spanish explorers arrived in Peru in the 16th century, looting Inca riches as they went, an Incan priest named Amaru Maru fled his temple with a valuable golden disk—“The Key of the Gods of the Seven Rays.” Amaru Maru found the doorway and saw it was guarded by Shaman priests.
He presented to them the golden disk, and following a ritual performed by the priests, the smaller doorway opened. Behind it was a tunnel that shone with great blue light. Amaru Maru passed into the doorway, left the disk with the Shaman priests, and vanished from Earth to the land of the gods.
Interestingly, investigators did discover a small, round, indention in the rock on the right hand column of the smaller doorway. The examinations led them to believe that should a disk shaped object be “inserted” into the indention, it would be held in place by the surrounding rock.
9. Abu Ghurab, Egypt, The Place Of The Gods
The Abu Sir Pyramids, site of Abu Ghurab, has claimed to be one of the oldest sites on the planet. Within Abu Ghurab, lies an ancient platform made of alabaster (Egyptian crystal) and is said to be in tune with the “vibration” of Earth. It can also “open the senses” in order for a person to communicate and “be one” with higher, sacred energies of the Universe. Essentially, it is a stargate and the sacred energies were the Neters (gods).
Interestingly, legends of their communication and way of travel between their world and ours almost mirrors the legends of the Cherokee Native Americans. The Cherokee tell of how “thought beings”—who are formless—would travel on a “wave of sound” from their home in the Pleiades Star System to Earth.
As the legends of Abu Ghurab being a stargate, there are also signs of what some would perceive to be advanced technology having been used to create the site. One example is the perfectly precise circular markings that have been drilled into the alabaster.
