Ancient Egyptian mummification was so effective that some recently unwrapped specimens, dating back 3,000 years, still had skin and even a full head of hair on them! The ancient Egyptians mummified many different species of animals, which typically represented different gods. The process used on animals was even as elaborate as those employed on a human. In this video, you see a cat that lived in Egypt over 2,000 years ago! Mummified in resin, this cat lived a life of luxury in the royal temple at Bubastis, the city devoted to Bast, the cat goddess of pleasure, dancing, and music. Believe it or not, archeologists have found 30 catacombs in Egypt, each one dedicated to a single animal and each packed floor to ceiling with mummies, for a total numbering in the millions! The mummified remains of the Egyptian falcon are over 3,000 years old! Falcons were often mummified and buried with their masters because they represented the god of the sky, war, and hunting—Horus. You likely recognize the Eye of Horus, —it’s the ancient Egyptian symbol of protection. Another highly revered bird in Egypt was the Ibis. Held sacred, the Ibis was not only mummified but also often given elaborate funerals. Just as the falcon represented Horus, the Ibis represented Thoth — thought to be the originator of writing, math, and magic! The embalming technique of mummification began around 2600 B.C. and preserved the deceased for the life after death.
