Enrico Nicola "Henry" Mancini (April 16, 1924 – June 14, 1994) was an American composer, conductor and arranger, who is best remembered for his film and television scores. Often cited as one of the greatest composers in the history of film, he won four Academy Awards, a Golden Globe, and twenty Grammy Awards, plus a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.
His best known works include the jazz-idiom theme to The Pink Panther film series ("The Pink Panther Theme") and the theme to the Peter Gunn television series. The Peter Gunn theme won the first Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Mancini also had a long collaboration on film scores with the film director Blake Edwards.
Mancini was born in the Little Italy neighborhood of Cleveland, and was raised near Pittsburgh, in the steel town of West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. His parents immigrated from the Abruzzo region of Italy. Mancini's father, Quinto (born March 13, 1893, Scanno, Italy) was a steelworker, who made his only child begin piccolo lessons at the age of eight. When Mancini was 12 years old, he began piano lessons. Quinto and Henry played flute together in the Aliquippa Italian immigrant band, "Sons of Italy". After graduating from Aliquippa High School in 1942, Mancini attended the renowned Juilliard School of Music in New York. In 1943, after roughly one year at Juilliard, his studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army. He initially served in the infantry, later transferring to an Army band. In 1945, he participated in the liberation of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp in Austria.
Mancini (Italian pronunciation: [maŋˈtʃini]) is a surname of Italian origin which, etymologically, comes from the Italian noun mancino, literally meaning "left handed". It may refer to:
Sound recording and reproduction is an electrical or mechanical inscription and re-creation of sound waves, such as spoken voice, singing, instrumental music, or sound effects. The two main classes of sound recording technology are analog recording and digital recording. Acoustic analog recording is achieved by a small microphone diaphragm that can detect changes in atmospheric pressure (acoustic sound waves) and record them as a graphic representation of the sound waves on a medium such as a phonograph (in which a stylus senses grooves on a record). In magnetic tape recording, the sound waves vibrate the microphone diaphragm and are converted into a varying electric current, which is then converted to a varying magnetic field by an electromagnet, which makes a representation of the sound as magnetized areas on a plastic tape with a magnetic coating on it. Analog sound reproduction is the reverse process, with a bigger loudspeaker diaphragm causing changes to atmospheric pressure to form acoustic sound waves. Electronically generated sound waves may also be recorded directly from devices such as an electric guitar pickup or a synthesizer, without the use of acoustics in the recording process other than the need for musicians to hear how well they are playing during recording sessions.
Peter Gunn is an American private eye television series which aired on the NBC and later ABC television networks from 1958 to 1961. The show's creator (and also writer and director on occasion) was Blake Edwards. It was also directed by Boris Sagal, Robert Gist, Jack Arnold, Lamont Johnson, one episode by Robert Altman, and several others. A total of 114 thirty-minute episodes were produced by Spartan Productions. Season one was filmed at Universal Studios, seasons two and three were filmed at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Philip H. Lathrop and William W. Spencer were cinematographers on many episodes. Craig Stevens' wardrobe was tailored by Don Richards and Lola Albright's fashions by Jax.
The series is probably best remembered today for its music, especially the popular "Peter Gunn Theme", which won an Emmy Award and two Grammys for Henry Mancini and subsequently has been performed and recorded by many jazz, rock, and blues musicians. The series was No. 17 in the Nielsen ratings for the 1958–1959 TV season.

His children, upon learning of his misfortune, immediately desert him knowing he will no longer provide them with money. So Adolph Greig sinks lower and lower and becomes a street beggar, too proud to ask for help from his friends and unable to find his son or daughter. One night, standing in front of the concert hall, he sinks to the street from hunger and fatigue. He is picked up by two men associated with the orchestra, Mancini and Rozzini, and they take him to Rozzini's and they develop a plan whereby they will set up Greig in a next-door studio where he can give violin lessons. A young violin genius named Carl Rupert shows up and, with the aid of Mancini and Rozzini, Greig starts the boy off on a brilliant career. Or, what promised to be a brilliant career until his long-lost mother shows up.

Live from 1987. Don Menza does a fine sax solo here. Plas Johnson was the gifted sax player on the album and the movie score.

Hit song form 1962 Howard Hawks' motion picture "Hatari" starring John Wayne which was shot in Africa. Seems like I recall hearing Henry Mancini in Washington D.C. at a concert saying this song would help send his Baby Elephants to college. I always made time to hear Henry Mancini when he was in town. His pianist in the Peter Gunn days was the now famous John Williams.
From "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" written by Henry Mancini especially for Peter Sellers.

And you see, I kind of shivered to conformity, did you see
The way I cowered to authority? You see
And my life, it's a series of compromises, anyway it's a shame
And I'm conditioned to accept it all, you see
Than I had before, than I've presently got
Than I'll ever use up, than I really need
Than I had before, than I've presently got
Than I'll ever use up, than I really need
Than I had before, than I could possibly spend
Than I'll ever use up, than I really need
Than I had before, than I could possibly spend
Than I'll ever use up, than I really need
It's more than I can spare
My religion is caged
Safe from progress, purgatory I know
How does this affect me? Emotionally affect me
Will they let me go?
Will they let me go?
Will they let me go?
Equilibrium imbalanced again
I feel no pain
I feel no
I feel no pain
Jabberwocky haunts me, in my memory it's caged
I feel no pain
I feel no
I feel no pain
Jabberwocky haunts me, in my memory it's caged
I feel no pain
I feel no pain
I feel no pain
But if you punched me in the stomach, then I'd feel it again
Feel no pain
I feel no
I feel no pain
But if you punched me in the stomach, then I'd feel it again
