We are able to keep the road partially open by using five miles of moveable barriers. The barriers are moved after the morning and evening rush hours.
And a shout out to the brave workers riding that platform. It takes more than a little nerve to be driving a million dollar contraption between all those lanes of rushing traffic.

Interstate 494 (I-494) is a loop route making up part of a beltway of Interstate 94, circling through the southern and western portions of the Minneapolis – Saint Paul metropolitan area in Minnesota. The 43-mile (69 km) road is coupled with Interstate 694 (which circles the northern edge of the Twin Cities metro area) at each end, and composes more than half of the major beltway of the region. I-694 / I-494 also act as loop routes for Interstate 35E and Interstate 35W.
I-494 has a few intersections with other interstates:
The speed limit on I-494 is 60 miles per hour (100 km/h). Interstate highways outside of the loop in Minnesota may be signed as high as 70 mph (110 km/h). Most highways inside the loop are signed at speeds of 55 mph (90 km/h) or lower, though a few exceptions were added in September 2005, allowing speeds of up to 60 mph (97 km/h) in some places. Those roads had been signed at 60 mph (97 km/h) or higher up until the gasoline crises of the 1970s.
Exit numbering of Interstate 494 is unusual in that it begins at the Minnesota River heading westbound (between Mendota Heights and Bloomington), and continues clockwise around the entire beltway. The last exit is #71 to Pilot Knob Road. The most significant landmark on the length of I-494 is Mall of America, just south of the intersection of I-494 and State Highway 77.

Southbound I-494 closes this weekend
Summer might be over, but road construction season isn't. Major projects snarled roadways and slowed traffic even on weekends. The next closure on I-494 begins Friday at 10 p.m. and ends Monday at 5 a.m. Southbound I-494 will close for about 5.5 miles between I-694/94 in Maple Grove to I-394 in Minnetonka. Crews will paint two bridges over I-494, repair concrete, and stripe sections of the interstate. Detours are planned around the closure via eastbound I-694/94, southbound Highway 169 and westbound Highway 212 to I-494. Weekend closure awaits on I-494
The commute could be getting a little hairy if you take I-494. This weekend 494 will be closed in both directions between I-394 and I-94/694. You may have already noticed westbound I-94/694 is down to one lane leading to southbound I-494. Through the remainder of the year, I-494 between I-394 and I-694 will be down to four lanes, two in each direction. Still, that's an improvement over what drivers had to deal with last year. "There will be delays. The good thing this year is we will have two lanes open in each direction. I-494 from Minnetonka to Maple Grove is undergoing major renovations. Nevertheless we are doing our best to minimize the traffic impacts and keep the road open during construction. We are able to keep the road partially open by using five miles of moveable barriers. The barriers are moved after the morning and evening rush hours.
And a shout out to the brave workers riding that platform. It takes more than a little nerve to be driving a million dollar contraption between all those lanes of rushing traffic.

Summer might be over, but road construction season isn't. Major projects snarled roadways and slowed traffic even on weekends.
The next closure on I-494 begins Friday at 10 p.m. and ends Monday at 5 a.m. Southbound I-494 will close for about 5.5 miles between I-694/94 in Maple Grove to I-394 in Minnetonka. Crews will paint two bridges over I-494, repair concrete, and stripe sections of the interstate.
Detours are planned around the closure via eastbound I-694/94, southbound Highway 169 and westbound Highway 212 to I-494. You can plan your own detour on www.511mn.org
"We're winding down, which is good news," said Nick Carpenter, spokesperson with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. "In mid–to late November, we should have everything back open on I-494."
People headed to events in the south metro, like Valleyfair, the Renaissance Festival, or apple orchards should expect longer drive time. This weekend's work is part of a two-year construction plan to improve I-494 by repairing pavement and adding a third lane.

The commute could be getting a little hairy if you take I-494. This weekend 494 will be closed in both directions between I-394 and I-94/694.
You may have already noticed westbound I-94/694 is down to one lane leading to southbound I-494. Through the remainder of the year, I-494 between I-394 and I-694 will be down to four lanes, two in each direction. Still, that's an improvement over what drivers had to deal with last year.
"There will be delays. The good thing this year is we will have two lanes open in each direction. Last year we utilized a movable barrier system so we had three lanes to work with." said MnDOT spokesperson Nick Carpenter.
The closure of I-494 this weekend from I-394 to I-94/694 will allow crews to switch the northbound lanes into the southbound side. I-494 will be back open in time for Monday morning's commute.
"Pay attention to what's in front of you, you may have traffic slowing down. We had a lot of rear-end crashes last year when we did this project and we want to see a reduction in crashes," said Carpenter.
The project should be complete by November. When it's done, then work begins on Highway 169.
