Famous for his Beatles' Sgt Pepper's album cover, he has produced a vast body of paintings, collages and album covers. In 2015, aged 82, Peter was commissioned to produce his largest work to date, the re-design of a Mersey ferry. In this film, we spend time with Peter at work in his studio and follow the process of the ferry's pop art makeover, from Peter's early drawings to the launch in Liverpool, revealing an iconic British artist still as active today as he ever was.
In this episode of TateShots we visit Peter Blake in his London studio as he begins work on a new collage piece. Blake emerged as a leader of the Pop Art movement in the 1960s, and in this film the artist reminds us that he was working with comic book imagery before Roy Lichtenstein and created sculptures of consumer products before Andy Warhol. His connection to collage extends to his working environment where his collection of objects and curiosities, or the ‘art of collecting’ as he puts it, is an conceptual art form in itself. Peter Blake’s work is currently on display in Tate Modern in the Witty, Sexy, Gimmicky: Pop 1957–67 display: http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/display/witty-sexy-gimmicky-pop-1957-67
