Pleven Province (Bulgarian: Област Плевен or Plevenska Oblast Bulgarian: Плевенска Област, former name Pleven okrug) is a province located in central northern Bulgaria, bordering the Danube river, Romania and the Bulgarian provinces of Vratsa, Veliko Tarnovo and Lovech. It is divided into 11 subdivisions, called municipalities, that embrace a territory of 4,333.54 km² with a population, as of February 2011, of 269 752 inhabitants. The province's capital is the city of Pleven.
The following Bulgarian terms may be used:
The province is part of the central Danubian Plain. It is crossed from south to north by the rivers Iskar, Vit and Osam (in west-east order); the river valleys are separated by limestone plateaus.
The Pleven province (oбласт, oblast) contains 11 municipalities (Bulgarian: singular: oбщина, obshtina - plural: oбщини, obshtini). The following table shows the names of each municipality in English and Cyrillic, the main town (in bold) or village, and the population of each as of December 2009.
Pleven (Bulgarian: Плевен pronounced [ˈplɛvɛn]) is the seventh most populous city in Bulgaria. Located in the northern part of the country, it is the administrative centre of Pleven Province, as well as of the subordinate Pleven municipality.
Internationally known for the Siege of Plevna of 1877, it is today a major economic centre of the Bulgarian Northwest and Central North and the third largest city of Northern Bulgaria after Varna and Rousse.
The name comes from the Slavic word "plevnya" ("barn") or from "plevel", meaning "weed", which share the same root + the Slavic suffix or ending -en.
Pleven is located in an agricultural region in the very heart of the Danubian Plain, the historical region of Moesia, surrounded by low limestone hills, the Pleven Heights. The city's central location in Northern Bulgaria defines its importance as a big administrative, economic, political, cultural and transport centre. Pleven is located 170 kilometres (106 miles) away from the capital city of Sofia, 320 km (199 miles) west of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and 50 km (31 miles) south of the Danube.
Asenovo (Bulgarian: Асеново) is a village in northern Bulgaria, part of Nikopol municipality, Pleven Province. It was founded in 1892 by Roman Catholic 203 households of Banat Bulgarians returning to Bulgaria from the Banat. They came mainly from the village of Vinga, but also from Dudeștii Vechi (Stár Bišnov), Konak and Breștea (Brešćа).
The village is located 24 km from Nikopol and 28 km from Pleven, on the main road between the two towns. It has an area of about 1.36 km2. Asenovo's design features straight, narrow streets and 12,000 m2 lots, each divided in four 3,000 m2 yards. Most of the houses have a specific Banat Bulgarian architecture, being narrow and long towards the yard and having a more sharp-pointed roof than the typical Eastern Orthodox Bulgarian houses.
Asenovo is named after the medieval Bulgarian Asen dynasty. The village has a Catholic church (of the Holy Trinity) and a chitalishte (читалище, "community centre"), which was founded in 1927 and named after Petar Parchevich. It disposes of a large and a small hall and a library. Asenovo's Banat Folklore Group is known for winning a total of 18 gold medals at the 5th and 6th National Fair of Folk Art in Koprivshtitsa.

The starry sky rotation around the North star (Polaris) above Asenovo, Pleven Province, Bulgaria, shot on 8-9th of August 2015. Airplanes and shootings star are captured as well. The video is that short because my camera's battery died - I had been shooting all day long until sundown and didn't have time to recharge it. Note that the shooting time itself was not that short - it took me roughly 66 minutes, not counting preparation and test shooting. Timelapse video made of 132 photos, each with the following camera settings: ISO 2000, exposure 30 sec, f/3.5. During a visit to Campus Skellefteå in Sweden as part of the UNICREDS project, Stelian Dimitrov, Associate Professor at Sofia University "St Kliment Ohridski" was inspired by the concept of a multi-institutional campus. This kind of campus provides a platform for university-level education and may also also vocational and adult education, development projects, high-tech and start-up companies, and becomes a visual knowledge catalyst for change and development in a city or region. In Pleven, a city in the north of Bulgaria, access to university-level education is difficult. Many young people leave the region to study and to find work, while still more are unable to study because they can't afford to move to another city. Professor Dimitrov saw the potential of the multi-institutional ca...
