CALGARY -

Still hurting and baffled, the family of Mark Mariani, whose his life was taken in an apparent random attack, hopes the latest lead ends with an arrest or arrests.

His older sister, Kathy Mariani, said her brother who long suffered from Crohn’s disease and lived with their parents received good news from a doctor just a day before his lifeless body was found in a parking near North Hill shopping centre on 16 Ave. N.W.

“He was happy,” she said Tuesday.

“We were all happy ... it boggles the mind.”

Now police are looking for two men believed to be witnesses to the deadly Oct. 3, 2010 slaying.

Det. Mike Cavilla said the pair have been ruled out as being involved in the murder and they are desperate to track them down with the belief they may have key information in the hunt for a killer or killers.

“We’ve pursued all other avenues,” Cavilla said

“We would like to speak to them.”

While robbery has not been ruled out as a motive, Cavilla said there is no indication Mariani knew his killer or killers.

“The investigation to date (shows) this is not a targeted attack but rather a random attack,” he said.

And as his family struggles with his death, the reality they have no explanation of why Mariani was killed weighs heavily.

Word of a potential new lead is promising but also difficult because it makes them relive memories still so raw, his sister said.

“Now we feel like we are swirling in the abyss,” she said.

“We are so numb ... but it stirs up feelings.

“We hope and pray people will come forward to police with information regarding the tragic murder of a son, brother and uncle.”

Cops are looking for an Asian man in his late 30s or early 40s driving a dark car, possibly a Nissan Sentra.

The second is a white man in his early 30s who was wearing a white and red shirt with a white ‘O’ on the front at the time.

Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 222-8477.
