« On l’appelait souvent Caprice Chéreau.

Actor, director, scriptwriter, opera and theatre stage director, Patrice Chéreau quickly reached, almost despite himself, the status of living icon. His films made him known to the general public and catapulted him to the forefront of the international scene, but it’s with his work as an opera and theatre stage director that his genius was fully exposed in the 70s. For forty years, the man whose greatest fear was to have to repeat himself never ceased to amaze audiences with his artistic choices, his keen sense of image and innovative take on classic texts, magnified by the extraordinary physicality of his actors. In 2005, he came to the Ciné Lumière for the third time to present "Gabrielle", a film loosely based on Joseph Conrad's short story, 'The Return'.

I saw her get off the bus
Perfectly dangerous
Though I could tell the trouble she'd spell
I fell for Gabrielle
She said, "I can't stay long
There's somewhere else I belong"
But I made her smile with my so-called style
I knew she'd stay awhile
Gabrielle is the next big thing
Gabrielle, you'll have everything
Soon everyone will call out your name
Call out your name, my Gabrielle
Moving so fast, we crashed
Hours and weeks flash past
Running around, uptown and down
Feet barely touched the ground
We could break all the rules
But love is a game we'd lose
Never confess, pretend you care less
No one's to blame, I guess
Gabrielle is the next big thing
Gabrielle, you'll have everything
Soon everyone will call out your name
Gabrielle, I can't let you go, Gabrielle, in the end I know
I'll be the one who calls out your name
Calls out your name, my Gabrielle
I call out your name, my Gabrielle
Gabrielle never cries
But something was in her eyes
Whispering words goodbye
Gabrielle shines on screen
And covers of magazines
On billboard signs, nine stories high
Once she was only mine
Gabrielle is the next big thing
Gabrielle, you'll have everything
Soon everyone will call out your name
Gabrielle, I can't let you go
Gabrielle, in the end I know
I'll be the one who calls out your name
Calls out your name, calls out your name
I call out your name, I call out your name
