Hana Assafiri, the feminist, activist and force of nature behind Fitzroy North's Moroccan Soup Bar and its sister diner, Moroccan Deli-cacy, is expanding her community-minded, all-vegetarian empire, opening a lunch-only taginerie out the back of the Brunswick East deli.
It's a Friday-Sunday situation for now with three sittings a day, at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm.
Similar to the offering at both the Soup Bar and Deli (which will continue to offer non-tagine-based banquets at night), you'll pay $25 for a set menu comprising a bowl of soup and three slow-cooked tagines, built on house-made harissa or chermoula and packed with vegetables and dates. These are served over either cous cous or quinoa in case you can't gluten, with condiments on the side. For $30 you also get dessert and a coffee.
Everything is made from scratch by the team of Muslim women, and as per the Soup Bar, if you want takeaways, you can BYO containers or buy the whole tagine.
Unlike the Soup Bar, they will be taking bookings.
