Amy Jade Winehouse (14 September 1983 – 23 July 2011) was an English singer and songwriter known for her deep expressive contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of musical genres, including soul (sometimes labelled as blue-eyed soul and neo soul),rhythm and blues, and jazz. Winehouse's 2003 debut album, Frank, was a critical success in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her 2006 follow-up album, Back to Black, led to five 2008 Grammy Awards, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made her the first British female to win five Grammys, including three of the general field "Big Four" awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Winehouse won three Ivor Novello Awards: in 2004, Best Contemporary Song for "Stronger Than Me"; in 2007, Best Contemporary Song again, this time for "Rehab"; and in 2008, Best Song Musically and Lyrically for "Love Is a Losing Game." She won the 2007 Brit Award for Best British Female Artist, having also been nominated for Best British Album, with Back to Black.
Back to Black is the second and final studio album by English singer and songwriter Amy Winehouse, released on 27 October 2006 by Island Records. The album spawned five singles: "Rehab", "You Know I'm No Good", "Back to Black", "Tears Dry on Their Own" and "Love Is a Losing Game". Back to Black was acclaimed by music critics, who praised Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson's production, as well as Winehouse's songwriting and emotive singing style.
At the 50th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, Back to Black won Best Pop Vocal Album and was also nominated for Album of the Year. At the same ceremony, Winehouse won four additional awards meaning that she ties with five other artists as the second-most awarded female in a single ceremony. The album was also nominated at the 2007 Brit Awards for MasterCard British Album and was shortlisted for the 2007 Mercury Prize. Back to Black sold 3.58 million copies in the UK alone, becoming the UK's second best-selling album of the 21st century. Worldwide, the album has sold over 12 million copies.
Island Records is a major record label that operates as a division of Universal Music Group (UMG). It was founded by Chris Blackwell, Graeme Goodall, and Leslie Kong in Jamaica and has been based in the United Kingdom since 1962. Blackwell sold the label to PolyGram in 1989. Both Island, and another recent PolyGram acquisition, A&M, were at the time the largest independent record labels in history, with Island in particular having exerted a major influence on the progressive UK music scene in the early 1970s. The label has been operating as one of Universal Music's standalone labels since 2014, also handling Mercury Records.
As of February 2014, three Island label brands exist in the world: Island UK, Island US, and Island Australia. Partially due to the label's significant legacy, Island remains one of UMG's pre-eminent record labels. In a 50-year anniversary documentary, Island Records artist Melissa Etheridge stated: "If you want to look at world music, music of the last fifty years that changed the world, you need look no further than Island Records." The label's US roster includes Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, Keke Palmer, Taio Cruz, the Vamps, Kiesza, Nikki Williams, Shawn Mendes, Neon Trees, Tove Lo, Avicii, Bon Jovi, American Authors and Fall Out Boy whereas the current UK roster includes Ariana Grande, Mumford & Sons, Florence + The Machine, John Newman, Hozier, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Disclosure, AlunaGeorge, Leona Lewis, Keane, James Morrison, Annie Lennox and Will Young.

The Amy Winehouse Foundation is a registered charity in England and Wales (number 1143740), set up in memory of English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse (1983–2011).
After the singer's death by alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011, the foundation was set up by Winehouse's family and launched on 14 September 2011 (which would have been Winehouse's 28th birthday). Its aim is to help young people and it works with other charitable organisations to provide frontline support. Its central office is in North London, but it also has an office in New York (operating under the name 'The Amy Winehouse Foundation US'). Both Jon Snow and Barbara Windsor are patrons for the charity, and ambassadors include Keira Chaplin and Mica Paris.
The Foundation’s work focuses on three core areas:

With fans all over the world still struggling to come to terms with her death, a Channel 5 documentary reveals the full shocking truth about Amy Winehouse's tortured private life. Amy Winehouse: The untold story charts the rise and fall of this extraordinarily gifted but tragically flawed individual -- and hears exclusively from her ex-husband Blake Fielder Civil, talking about their massive drug binges and their stormy relationship. We hear from an ex-teacher, Amy's former mum-in-law, reporters and photographers who followed her career, and finally a psychologist who talks about the many demons Amy ultimately failed to conquer. There's also, needless to say, a reminder of her amazing musical talent -- one that catapulted her into a world it seems she just wasn't equipped to cope ...

Lyrics: Woah-ooh Ooh, woah ooh He can only hold her for so long The lights are on but no one's home She's so vacant Her soul is taken He thinks "What's she running from?" Now how can he have her heart When it got stole? So he tries to pacify her Cuz what's inside her never dies Even if she's content in his warmth She is plagued with urgency Searching kisses The man she misses The man that he longs to be Now how can he have her heart When it got stole? In 2007, fresh off her album Back to Black, Amy Winehouse sat down with CNN to talk music, addiction and inspiration.
We've found this video, which was recorded just after the release of Amy Winehouse's first album Frank, in the heat archives. In it, Amy talks about her greatest fear, dying without having people know about her music, which seems especially poignant now. "My greatest fear is probably dying with no-one knowing of any contribution I've ever made to creative music. But that's cool, because I've made an album already that I'm so proud of that, you know, if I die tomorrow, touch wood, I would still feel fulfilled in a way." It isn't all sad, though, Amy also talks about her love of live gigs, saying, "It drives me, I love to do live shows. There is so much adrenaline." She also reveals her idea of perfect happiness, something that we can get behind 100 per cent. "My idea of perfect ...
