Talking Pictures Podcast | Series 2

No-one likes a talker in the theatre. But outside of the cinema, that’s another matter! MIFF’s annual Talking Pictures program is designed to have you discussing, questioning and arguing all things cinematic with the festival’s filmmakers and personalities.

MIFF will be reliving some of the highlights of the 2015 Talking Pictures program with a brand new series of podcasts. Check back to this page monthly for new instalments, find us on our iTunes page or better yet, subscribe to Widescreen, where new episodes will be launched.

Series 2, Episode 9 | Getting the Look: The Pitch of the Movie Poster

ABC's Zak Hepburn chats with film poster designer Jeremy Saunders (who has created posters for films including MIFF 2014's What We Do in the Shadows and MIFF 2015 Centrepiece Gala film Holding the Man) on a panel that includes artist-turned director Jason Lei Howden (Deathgasm, MIFF 2015), comic book artist Bernard Caleo, visual artist Sonny Day (one half of We Buy Your Kids, the team behind the MIFF 2015 artwork) and title designer Donna McCrum (Paper Planes, MIFF 2014; The Slap, MIFF 2011), to dissect the art of designing movie posters.

Does your meal really exist if you haven’t photographed it? In an age when everyone is a food critic, and chefs are some of our biggest celebrities, many of us seem more focused on documenting our food experiences than actually eating it! Join The Age’s Dani Valent, Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold (City of Gold, MIFF 2015), chef Shane Delia, Gelato Messina’s Declan Lee, The Katering Show's Kate McLennan and food blogger Emily Naismith as they discuss the trend of foodie-ism and whether it has gone too far.

New York-based Benny Safdie (pictured above right), one half of the sibling filmmaker duo with his brother Joshua Safdie, was a guest of MIFF to discuss his celebrated body of work, featured as a retrospective at MIFF 2015. Benny Safdie is in conversation with local filmmaker Rhys Graham.

Series 2, Episode 6 | History & Her Story

She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry (MIFF 2015) documentary reflects on the history of the women’s movement in the late 1960s, and focuses on the important women who fought for equality. The film provides an excellent opportunity to look back on women in Melbourne who actively fought for women’s rights and brought about change.

Join Kate Jinx, Merle Thornton, Mary Crooks, Marilyn Lake and Jean Taylor to hear their stories, and find out how their activism has affected us today.

MIFF 2015 film The Look of Silence is Oscar-nominated director and MacArthur fellow Joshua Oppenheimer's powerful follow-up to The Act of Killing (MIFF 2013). John Safran talks to Oppenheimer and, via Skype, the film's subject, Adi Rukun. Co-presented with the Indonesia Forum, University of Melbourne and Herb Feith Foundation.

We all have a film we’re embarrassed to admit we like. A film that, despite our awareness that it’s overloaded with cheesiness or bad acting, we have sitting in our DVD collection (Michael Bay anyone?).

Join comedians Lawrence Leung (screenwriter of Sucker, MIFF 2015), Hannah Gadsby and Alan Brough, director Kriv Stenders (The Principal, MIFF 2015) and ABC's Zak Hepburn as they reveal some unexpected, shameful favourite films in their cinematic repetoire and discuss why they believe these shouldn’t have been overlooked by critics and audiences.

Series 2, Episode 3 | Uneasy Laughs

 

Sometimes the funniest comedy comes from the most fantastical, awkward and tragic situations; from humour that violates our moral expectations, oversteps boundaries or finds light in the darkest corners. TV director Natalie Bailey (The Thick of It) joins comedian Josh Thomas (Please Like Me), playwright Lally Katz (star of Stories I Want to Tell You in Person, MIFF 2015) and directors Sebastián Silva (the subject of a MIFF 2015 retrospective) and Adam Elliot (Ernie Biscuit, MIFF 2015) to discuss how the juxtaposition of these opposing forces results in humour.
