The South China Sea is a marginal sea that is part of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing an area from the Singapore and Malacca Straits to the Strait of Taiwan of around 3,500,000 square kilometres (1,400,000 sq mi). The area's importance largely results from one-third of the world's shipping sailing through its waters and that it is believed to hold huge oil and gas reserves beneath its seabed.
It is located
The minute South China Sea Islands, collectively an archipelago, number in the hundreds. The sea and its mostly uninhabited islands are subject to competing claims of sovereignty by several countries. These claims are also reflected in the variety of names used for the islands and the sea.
South China Sea is the dominant term used in English for the sea, and the name in most European languages is equivalent, but it is sometimes called by different names in China's neighboring countries, often reflecting historical claims to hegemony over the sea.

US Strategic Bombers Fly Over Chinese-claimed Territory in South China Sea Two US strategic bombers have flown over Chinese-claimed territory in the disputed South China Sea. The US Air Force said in a statement on Friday that the Thursday flyover by two B-1B Lancer strategic bombers had been meant to assert the US’s right to pass through what the US regards as international territory. China claims almost the entire South China Sea, where Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei also have competing claims.
Britain's new aircraft carrier could be sent straight to the South China Sea in a deployment that would anger Beijing Britain's giant new aircraft carrier could be sent straight to the South China Sea in a deployment that would anger Beijing, it has emerged today. Both Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon have used a trip to Australia to warn China Britain will continue to use the contested waters. Mr Johnson made clear he expected HMS Queen Elizabeth to take a tour through the South China Sea once she is fully operational. Sir Michael made a less clear reference to Royal Navy ships doing so.
China is reportedly considering a change to its maritime policy: it would require foreign submarines to surface and fly their national flag while in Chinese waters, including the South China Sea. That could have a significant impact on American forces, because the U.S. Navy maintains at least four forward-deployed attack submarines in the area. The US Army and Air Force just tested out a telling new capability by landing a C-17, pulling out a high mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS), firing at a target, and flying away all within 20 minutes. The tactic essentially turns the US's tried and tested HIMARS into a scoot and shoot weapons system with wings, and it's the perfect solution for the problems posed by the South China Sea. The Fortaleza Do Monte is a typical Portuguese fortified complex strategically located on a hill above the old cathedral in the heart of the city. Its many old canons and mighty fortress walls are reminders of those times when invasion was a constant threat. The old centre of the city is the triangular Largo Do Senado, Senate Square. Its wonderful colonial buildings with their light-colored facades were built at the end of the 19th century and completely renovated in the final decade of the 20th. Macau's largest Buddhist temple, Templo de Kun Iam Tong, dates back 400 years to the Ming Dyn...
