Hello there![edit]

I'll revert your reversion of me at Old Montreal, but I probably understand what you were thinking. Please allow me to explain. The American Archive of Public Broadcasting will likely be a huge deal. It's a joint project of the Library of Congress and WGBH and allows us to link to 40,000 hours of US public broadcasting. It seems to just be getting off the ground. I'll be sending an e-mail to their project director in a bit to see if they are comfortable being linked to by Wikipedia (I'd guess they will be). And maybe even suggest some changes, e.g. putting the "I agree" button to their terms of use in a more accessible place, and maybe even eliminating the pre-broadcast material (color check screen and buzzing) from the start of the clips.

It's a bit difficult to use now. But think of the upside. Probably half their material is usable in some article, e.g. even if the Old Montreal program was a bit touristy, it's got 30 minutes of video of the old city and some basic commentary. Maybe a better example is at Ellen Watson. It's a very "small topic" from Wyoming and it may not be obvious at first glance, but half the material in our article is from George Hufsmith's book. The 30 minute interview of Hufsmith about the book by Wyoming PBS should add a lot for close readers of the article.

So I'm experimenting a bit, as you can see. Your patience would be appreciated.

Smallbones(smalltalk) 19:17, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

All you just said sounds great...wonderful resource. The problem i have is the link goes to a page that says "Please note: This content is currently not available". Still does now - perhaps only USA can see the content? This would be a problem if many cant see any content....Who Reads Wikipedia? Same with link at Ellen Watson....perhaps best to bring this up at the pump or a NB before more are added.--Moxy (talk) 19:29, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, this is very good to know. I can get both those videos just fine now. If only 21% of enWiki readers are from the US (per Signpost article) and these video/audio clips can't be viewed/heard outside the US then I certainly won't post the links so prominently. My guess though is that this is not the case - no mention of it in their very long Terms of Service. Probably a start up glich on their part, or maybe they are getting overwhelmed by unexpected traffic. It does give me another question to ask the project director though.
Smallbones(smalltalk) 19:49, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
@Smallbones - Ok I see your still adding these links ...I will have to bring this up at a NB ....no one out the USA can see them. Will be working on removing them to external links later .....but after the NB post tonight. Spam that is useless is a wast of everyone's time...especially our readers. WP:ELNO #7-- Moxy (talk) 11:42, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
I've got a phone call scheduled for this afternoon with the Project Director. The block outside the US is certainly a problem and I'm still experimenting on how to include the content. There is no intent to spam here, there is just a ton of newly available video and audio that I'd personally like to see included. My basic strategy will likely be as follows: no linking in the body of the article via the external media template, links only at the bottom of the article in the external links section, and only for essentially American topics (e.g. Durand, Michigan, population about 3,000). Citations or footnotes could be included anywhere pretty much the same as a book can be cited even if it's not online. I'll see if their project director has any suggestions or simple solutions.
BTW, I am personally vehemently against paid editing. You can easily check my record on this. This is not a case of paid editing. One of the reasons I am so much against paid editing is that in situations like this where it seems very important to an editor to get something done, the question almost automatically arises. One of the things I really want to get done on Wikipedia is the inclusion of more video. Thanks. Smallbones(smalltalk) 15:51, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

Removal of video at Evolution[edit]

--Moxy (talk) 16:25, 15 September 2016 (UTC) Could you clarify why you said that "80% can't see" the video? I have taken the liberty of reverting the removal for now. Gamall Wednesday Ida (talk) 14:57, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

Actually, I think he was mistaken in the belief that, since I added it, it was from the American Archive of Public Broadcasting (see above). It's not. It's just an outstanding video showing evolution in action from Harvard Medical School. It should be accessible everywhere. Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:04, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
Smallbones: Thanks for clarifying this. As a European reader, I too would remove region-locked content, and with extreme prejudice. Your video is fine, region- and content-wise, so far as I can see. Gamall Wednesday Ida (talk) 16:16, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
Very odd I never noticed this post before.... yes that YouTube video was a mistake on my part. All the external links could be used as sources if there is any more relevant info to be added.Moxy (talk) 16:25, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
Moxy, User:Gamall Wednesday Ida I'll try not to take up too much of your time, but as long as I have your attention, could you check out the link I put at the very bottom of WCTE. Does this type of link seem reasonable? Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:44, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
A link to Beekeeping? Have you read WP:ELNO #7? ....best not to add links to more info if it is useable by 80 percent of our readers. No runaround links pls.--Moxy (talk) 16:52, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
Smallbones: As expected I get "Please note: This content is currently not available at your location.". I am proceeding to remove the link with the extreme prejudice I mentioned earlier :-) Gamall Wednesday Ida (talk) 17:00, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
(EC) Actually I removed the Beekeeping link at WCTE and replaced it with a link to the search at AABP that gives all 75 WCTE videos there. Why give one example when I can link to the whole list? I really do think 90% of folks who look at the external links of a small Tennessee PBS station are probably located in the US, and it's clearly labeled as only being available in the US. I had also used the Beekeeping link at Beekeeping in the United States, is that what you mean by a runaround link? I'll make sure to take this discussion to the EL noticeboard after I talk with the AAPB folks. I'd think there is some wiggle room in the EL guideline for cases like this, but we'll see. There's no use fighting all the EL folks, but I also think it greatly improves the encyclopedia, e.g. to WCTE content linked to the WCTE article. BTW, your comments have been quite useful so far. Wyoming Supreme Court documentary link removal[edit]

See above....only 20 percent can see it (USA) only.--Moxy (talk) 19:08, 15 September 2016 (UTC)
"not viewable outside the U.S." might be a better edit summary then. Just pointing to the guideline, I was left to guess what the problem was. postdlf (talk) 19:19, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

Some good news[edit]

External video
Julia Child at KUHT.jpg
French Chef; Lasagne a la Francaise,11/25/1970, 28:37, WGBH Open Vault[1]

I talked with the project director at AAPB. It turns out that a related archive, WGBH open vault is not region blocked, so I'll have lots of work to do on this side of the story. Do please double check that it is not blocked, being in the US I can't do that myself. WGBH owns the content, so there should be no problem linking to it. They (AAPB) is also considering removing the region block, but lawyers do take their time. I do hope that folks won't get worked up over a AAPB link in the Durand, Michigan article. There you've got seniors in 1967 talking about working on the railroad, fights in the bars, dances and, indirectly, sex in the 1920s - you just can't find material like that anywhere for a town of 3,000 and almost nobody but Americans would want to listen to it anyway. In any case, I'll spend the next several days looking at the open vault material and delay the discussion at the EL noticeboard until I know exactly what I want to do with all the material. Thanks for all the feedback. Smallbones(smalltalk) 20:30, 15 September 2016 (UTC)

So can I. Smallbones, note that you can verify yourself if some medium is accessible outside your country, via VPN services. There are many of those, free and not. I sometimes use the Hola plugin for Chrome. The main drawback is that some websites blacklist those, especially the free ones, so sometimes you have to cycle through some IPs before getting a hit. Use of {{Wikipedia how to}} on Help:Infobox-related help pages[edit]

Hello, in this edit and this edit, you placed another hatnote-style template alongside the others that appear at the top of these help pages. This raises many questions:

  1. Why do these help pages need yet another template?
  2. These help pages really do not rise to the level of detail and specificity that one would expect of a How-to and they're prominently labeled Help. Thus the text associated with {{Wikipedia how to}}, "This page is a how-to guide", seems both a mislabeling/miscategorization and likely to cause confusion for editors.
  3. Furthermore the text "It is not one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines" seems really inappropriate and certain to cause confusion for editors. Where is the evidence that editors think that Help:Infobox and Help:Infobox picture are policies or guidelines? -- DanielPenfield (talk) 16:29, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

"Fell free to change the template perhaps to {{information page}} ...simply added to non-essays to avoid confusion. Always a good idea to state the status of a page as we have been having some problems as of late. I take it you are aware this type of notification is the norm all over and that {{Wikipedia how to}} is the normal one used on help pages like Help:Editing --Moxy (talk) 17:07, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

Perhaps I should explain more...was a talk recently that resulted in this change ...basically the idea is that info and help pages are not essays per-say yes they have the status of an essay...but are distinct in nature...not and essay but not yet policy. Again if you think these pages are special and dont need the normal notice remove them. -- Moxy (talk) 17:26, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

Misguided edit[edit]

You removed a WP:TFD template from Template:Systemic bias. Please never do that again. Once a template (article/category) has been tagged, the only venue that can be used is the actual discussion. Regardless of your opinion of that editor, who I thinks makes bad edits but is most certainly not a disruptive editor, if you undo this once more, I will have you blocked for being disruptive yourself. Is that clear? Debresser (talk) 15:46, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
Could we get you to use your common sense when going about editing PLEASE. Try not to go out of your way to do the wrong by our reaqders. I can explain more if you like ...in the meantime I will code the request to its not so disruptive. Disappointing to say the least that your helping this disruption.
The moment a deletion or merge template is added to the article, template or category, the only venues that are allowed to remove it are Afd, Tfd and Cfd, unless it is vandalism. Whether you are disappointed is not important. For all I know you are disappointed that the right traffic light doesn't let you pass, and it is still the law. Please don't take this personally and abide by procedure. It exists for a reason. Debresser (talk) 16:56, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
Need you to think outside of our bureaucracy from time to time. When something does not make any sense to begin with there is no need to put our readers and the community as a whole through a procedural process. The process is there for valid requests ...not newbie errors WP:TFD#REASONS - WP:MERGEREASON.. Again pls look at what is going on and do what is best for the encyclopaedia.--Moxy (talk) 17:19, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

WP:Update/1[edit]

I'm very happy to see that you're working on standardizing "departments" and fixing links; I think that will help. On this page and WP:Update/2, it looks like your main point was to add {{Essay}}, and that's fine ... both pages were already called essays, so that doesn't change anything. The other changes weren't as helpful IMO, because they hid what the page is about and how it works, but I welcome edits to any of these pages any time. It's always surprised me a bit that, for 8.5 years now, we haven't had more participation on these pages, even though WP:Update was regularly advertised in the Signpost for most of those years and got a lot of hits. What people have told me is that it's not a particularly pleasant or rewarding job and they're happy for me to do it, but still, I'd be happy to have some company once in a while. - Dank (push to talk) 10:54, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Actually ... WP:Update/2 hasn't been edited since 2010, so the right tag is probably {{Historical}}. I made the edit. - Dank (push to talk) 11:09, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
sounds good the purpose of the change was to take it out of the category that no longer existed. I have gone back and fix this again.... we normally don't have templates being directly transferred like this..... but I have fix the cat problem now.--Moxy (talk) 18:03, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Canada versus New France[edit]

Moxy, I fail to see how talking about other French colonies such as Louisiana has anything to do with Canada. For example, if we look at the New France article, it states that New France "was divided into colonies, each with its own administration: Canada, Acadia, Newfoundland (Plaisance), and Louisiana". Of course, the article in question has nothing to do with the colonies of Louisiana, or even of Newfoundland at that time since the latter did not join Canada until hundreds of years later, and obviously Louisiana never joined Canada at all. Subsequently, we are not talking about New France generally, just as we are not talking about British North American more generally (which at that time included almost all of the United States), but are instead talking very specifically about the entity known as "Canada", which was first a French and later a British colony, from which it eventually politically and geographically evolved into the country we know today. Perhaps if I had a better idea of from where you were coming from, as I can't currently fathom it. trackratte (talk) 03:31, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

Hey Moxy, I copies this to the relevant Talk page as you had already started a conversation there as I was posting here, so I'll look for your reply there. A pleasure as always, trackratte (talk) 03:40, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
Moxy, if I could entreat upon you to undo your latest edit, being the third time in less than an hour you have substituted "Canada" for "New France" which is not exactly inline with what we would like in 3RR. I know your heart is in the right place, as always (as is mine), however I know we can resolve this quite agreeably without edit warring. Perhaps we're both coming across as argumentative in the scramble, but our history together suggests nothing but the joint effort to make this a better repository of knowledge, so my apologies in advance if I have come across as aggressive in any way over the past hour or so. Looking forward to working with you as always. trackratte (talk) 04:20, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
Yes your right I will revert to before any changes then a talk can happen - status quoit is. --Moxy (talk) 04:32, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
Sounds good and thanks :-) . I'm going to take a pause from the subject as I tend to get a bit "into it". If you'd agree to a few days to sort it out on the talk, hopefully we can come to a better understanding of eachothers points over a more reasonable pace! I find it helps to take a day or so to absorb and think things over as well, as rapid fire responses don't tend to go very well with the more amiable dialectic approach that Wikipedia needs. Talk to you soon. trackratte (talk) 04:50, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

We currently have a page in main space here, but have not alerted interested editors yet because there are format concerns. You were active in formatting the Wikiproject:Music page awhile back. Could you help us properly format the page, particularly an article alerts section and the appropriate template needed for article talk pages? Your help is greatly appreciated.TheGracefulSlick (talk) 02:18, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Hello, Moxy and TheGracefulSlick. I put a heading for the task force page page on the article alert subscription list and placed an article alert template at the bottom of the task force page. However, you could run by it and check to make sure that I did it right. You are welcome to make any corrections, improvements, or format changes. Thanks. re Territorial evolution of Canada[edit]

Was this edit summary directed at me, or Trackratte? All I did was revert to the original form and then modify it to modern standards (don't need to bold the title of the article) and remove the paragraph about the history of the area pre-Canada, which was added by ... someone, I don't know, but I never noticed it was there. Did you mean to aim that summary at me or them? --Golbez (talk) 19:14, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Not sure who did what. Was simply restored to version that was there for years and years. We seem to have the same problem in a few major articles. A few articles have changed the usage of terms and seem to imply Canada from New France to present day is one continuous area that just got bigger over time....this is very wrong as we don't follow names of places but territory. Also have a problem with the misuse of the term Colony and Dominion all over. NeIt's disheartening to see things lIke a Province being called a Colony. As for prehistory section....this would be the normal way historians present history....with a bit of a back look....as so readers and researchers hAve some context.Moxy (talk) 19:30, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
"it's disheartening to see things like a province called a colony" But Province of Canada says right in the first sentence it was a colony? And that doesn't seem to be in dispute? --Golbez (talk) 19:42, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
Sorry was not clear on that point. ...meant to say disheartening to see province of Quebec called "Colony of Canada" thus implying Canada as a name has been used continuously. It's misleading and not how history books the kids read explain things.--Moxy (talk) 20:02, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Currently reading https://books.google.ca/books?id=sscTAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA83&dq=colony+of+canada&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj4w5HJub3RAhUo94MKHaESD3U4FBDoAQgtMAI#v=onepage&q=colony%20of%20canada&f=false

Then going to read Conway's black controversial history book. Going to compare these with stuff written in the 70 to 90 that I learned. Never seen anyone not talk about New France as a whole. Moxy (talk) 20:37, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Hey Mox, came here to discuss Canada main body text, as it seems you and I are the only people editing this area during the last week or so, and saw this. Feel free to move this over to a new section if you'd like, it just seems this is more or less inline with the same subject area. Perhaps it would be easier if you outline your issues point by point to make discussing them a little easier? Right now I am tracking an issue you with have with the various iterations of Canada being referred to as Canada? Up to this moment I was not aware that this point has ever been in dispute. French Canada was a French colony. The first iteration of "Quebec" was a British colony, as was the "Canadas", the United Province of Canada, and the Dominion of Canada. These are all thoroughly referenced and verifiable points. Please let me know if this is actually an issue for you, or if I've simply misunderstood. As for the mention of the British colony of Quebec in the lead, the term "British colony of Canada" was used as a simplification (as its a lead) to encompass Quebec, Upper Canada, Lower Canada, and the Province of Canada, I believe, thus "colony" not being capitalized as a proper name. I believe this has been modified by both you and I now.

In the Canada article you will have noticed I have not been reverting your changes, but have been adding to them through copy edits, and the addition of references. For example, your beginning the second paragraph within the lede as "the lands now covered by Canada" I think makes a bit more sense as it stands now, inline with your edit. The points which I have modified have largely revolved around

  1. Sticking to talking about Canada (or the contemporary 'area known as Canada' in the 1530s'), thus no need to talk about the establishment of all the various French and British colonies and territories within New France and British North America respectively. These points are of course relevant and are touched upon in the main body at the relevant points in Canada's history (ie when Acadia became part of Canada). Mention of these other colonies would make sense in the lead of New France or British North America, but the Canada article is obviously much narrower in focus than those two articles, as well as the fact that the geographic majority or at least a substantial portion of British North America and New France are covered by the current United States of America, so once again the BNA and NF articles are not Canada specific articles.
  2. 1867 declared a Dominion known as Canada, and was officially styled the "Dominion of Canada", ie "Dominion Government", "Dominion Parks", etc. The "Dominion" part of the name didn't see a decline until the 1950s with the emergent Canadian nationalism and distancing from the British due to the colonial connotations of the term "Dominion", ie a self-governing colony within the British Empire.
  3. Canada and New France were established at the same time and place. I've added numerous reliable sources. For example, one article by a PhD simply uses "Canada/New France" when discussing this establishment, and I cited the passage stating that the official discovery, naming, and claiming of Canada was what became the "cradle of New France". As other colonies and territories were added to New France, Canada (where New France started) became one of five separate colonies with their own governments. This last fact (New France consisting of five separate colonies) has been in the respective Wikipedia articles for years, and as such I wasn't ever aware this was in dispute.

I think those are more or less the only points I worked within. Please let me know what you think! And once again if you can number your separate points so we can address them separately will likely expedited our work towards improving the article(s). Cheers. trackratte (talk) 17:45, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

  1. We cant just talk about a small region called Canada this is simply not how we talk about Canadian history...not even when talking about New France. We cant pick and choice how we present information ...all we can do is regurgitate how our history is written. See Further reading pls stop using websites for information read real books.
  2. Political evolution is not the same as the territorial evolution of a new nation.
  3. They were not established at the same time New France got its name first.(pls read about Giovanni da Verrazzano and Nova Gallia,)

+--Moxy (talk) 22:17, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

1. Yes, we present the facts. The fact that were presented vis a vis the establishment of French Canada are factual and verifiable, to which you agree to on my talk page. And of course we can talk about a "small region called Canada" at the Canada article, that is precisely where you would talk about it, as it is part of Canada's history.

2. You're right, political and territorial evolution are not the same. I don't know what your point is here. 3. New France was officially established at the cross raising ceremony by Jacques Cartier in July of 1534, where this event took place was in an area known at that time as Canada. This area called Canada was later constituted as a separate French colony (1 of 5) within New France, which continued to be known as Canada. This territory, known as Canada was later transferred to the British. The area known as Canada was known by various iterations of Canada under the British, Lower, Upper, and the Province of Canada. This same area then became part of the British Dominion of Canada. What about this do you dispute? As it is all completely accurate and verifiable information, supported by government and academic sources. For example, an article by a PhD states that the cross raising ceremony held in Canada "became the cradle of New France". I am still not sure what exactly amongst these facts you dispute, why, and based on what exact information. trackratte (talk) 01:41, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Come to the talk page....not about the facts... It's about how a lead in an FA article is written and the wording used.--Moxy (talk) 02:33, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Also make sure the sources your using don't contradict your point this source ....clearly say "Nevertheless New France was officially founded around 1604 to 1608 by Intendant Samuel de Champlain and Pierre Dugua de Mons. W. I dont dispute the date 1534.....but you got to understand the term founded it's not cut and dry as you can see with your own source. --Moxy (talk) 02:39, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

My apologies, I didn't see your post here since you began a conversation on my talk page. I think this is the fourth time now that I have acknowledged the fact that 1534 was an "establishment" in the sense of 'naming and claiming' Canada as Canada, and quite literally putting it on the map, with "Canada" appearing on Italian maps in the 1560s. We have both agreed that permanent settlement did not begin until later, for example the shortly lived settlement of Charlesbourg-Royal in 1541, Tadoussac in 1600, and Quebec City in 1608. May sources will say "founded" in the sense of "permanently settled" which is fine and not a contradiction. My argument has never been that we should say Canada was settled in 1534 as a French colony, only that the event itself, as being important to Canadian history and thus forming some part in nearly every complete history of Canada, should be mentioned as such. Quite simply, this date marks the start point for Canada and New France, which is to say nothing regarding "Canada" existed prior to this point in terms of a claimed and named place or entity. That is my only point on this subject, and always has been. trackratte (talk) 01:51, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

Templates Politics of Republic of China and Politics of Taiwan[edit]

Hello! I have come across an edit you made in December here, where you reverted a redirect created by User:Wrestlingring. That user has made quite a number of problematic edits, but in this case I think the idea was good. Since 2006 there seems to have been two different template covering the politics of Taiwan/ROC, Template:Politics of the Republic of China and Template:Politics of Taiwan. The redirect seems to have been made in order to merge the two templates and making the "Taiwan" version the working template. Two minutes after the redirect was created, the target template was edited by IP_135.23.144.167 (who is the same editor), and to me it looks as if the "Taiwan" version now contains all the relevant material from the "ROC" version. I do not know enough about how templates function, so I am not sure if the redirect will work, but I am sure it would be nice to avoid this fork. Any idea about how to continue? Regards! --T*U (talk) 16:53, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

yes majority of this gentlemans edits were reverted..... if you believe this is a rare occasion where he was correct feel free to redirect the page.--Moxy (talk) 17:16, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
