8 February 1903 – 6 December 1990) was a Malaysian politician who served as the first Chief Minister of the Federation of Malaya from 1955 to 1957, before becoming Malaya's first Prime Minister after independence in 1957, remaining Prime Minister following the formation of Malaysia in 1963, when Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore joined the federation, until his retirement in 1970.
Commonly known simply as "Tunku" or "The Tunku" (a Malay royal title), Tunku Abdul Rahman is widely regarded, even by his critics, as Malaysia's founding father, the architect of Malayan independence and the formation of Malaysia. As such, he is often referred to as Bapa Kemerdekaan (Father of Independence) or Bapa Malaysia (Father of Malaysia).
Tunku Abdul Rahman was born on 8 February 1903, in Alor Setar, Kedah, the seventh son of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah, the twenty-fifth ruler of the Kedah Sultanate. Tunku's mother was Che Manjalara, the fourth wife of Sultan Abdul Hamid. At that time, cholera and malaria were very common all over Kedah and at least two of Tunku's brothers and his older sister died from cholera while Tunku himself suffered from intermittent attacks of malaria until he left for London in 1920.
Abd al-Rahman or Abd ar-Rahman (Arabic: عبد الرحمن or occasionally عبد الرحمان; DMG ʿAbd ar-Raḥman) is a male Muslim given name, and in modern usage, surname. It is built from the Arabic words Abd, al- and Rahman. The name means "servant of the most merciful", ar-Rahman being one of the names of God in the Qur'an, which give rise to the Muslim theophoric names.
The letter A of the al- is unstressed, and can be transliterated by almost any vowel, often by u. Because the letter R is a sun letter, the letter l of the al- is assimilated to it. Thus although the name is written in Arabic with letters corresponding to Abd al-Rahman, the usual pronunciation corresponds to Abd ar-Rahman. Alternative transliterations include ‘Abd ar-Rahman, Abdul Rahman, Abdur Rahman, Abdur Rehman, Abdul Rehman, Abidur Rahman, and others, all subject to variant spacing and hyphenation. Certain transliterations tend to be associated with certain areas, for example, Abdirahman in Somalia, and Abderrahmane in French-speaking North Africa.
Marine Park is the name of a neighborhood and a public park in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, that lies between Mill Basin and Gerritsen Beach. The neighborhood is mostly squared off in area by Gerritsen Avenue, Flatbush Avenue, Avenue U and Kings Highway. The eponymous park is within the neighborhood. The neighborhood is largely made up of ethnic groups such as Italians, Irish, Greeks, and Jews. The area is part of Brooklyn Community Board 18.
The neighborhood is situated around Gerritsen Creek, the westernmost inlet of Jamaica Bay; the creek's path within the neighborhood was covered in 1920. During the last 5,000 years strips of sand were deposited by ocean currents. These beach strips form a surf-barrier and allow salt marshes to thrive:
The area was a hunting and fishing ground for Native Americans from the nearby village of Keshawchqueren. Pits for cooking and preparing food dating from 800 to 1400 AD were uncovered in Marine Park, along with deer and turtle bones, oyster shells, and sturgeon scales. In the 17th century, the Dutch began to settle in the area, which had similarities to the marshland and coastal plains of the Netherlands. The land proved to be fairly good farmland and there was an abundance of clams, oysters, and game from the region as well.
The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park (Malay: Taman Negara Tunku Abdul Rahman) comprises a group of 5 islands located between 3 to 8 km off Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia. The park is spread over 4,929 hectares, two-thirds of which cover the sea. Before the Ice age, it formed part of the Crocker Range mass of sandstone and sedimentary rock on the mainland. However, about one million years ago, the melting ice brought about changes in the sea level and parts of the mainland were cut off by the sea to form the islands of Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik dan Sulug. Evidence of this can be seen from the exposed sandstone of the coastline forming the cliffs, caves, honeycombs and deep crevices. The park was named after Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia's first Prime Minister.
Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal in downtown Kota Kinabalu is the ferry terminal for those heading to the islands in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park (Gaya, Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik and Sulug). This ferry terminal is also the departure point for patrons staying at either Manukan Island Resort, Gayana Resort or Bunga Raya Resort

We headed out to Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, only 20min boat ride from Sabah's capital Kota Kinabalu. There we headed to various islands for a day of adventure. We experienced the Coral Flyer, a zip line that goes from Gaya Island to Sapi Island, and also tries some snorkelling. We travelled to Sabah as guests of Sabah Tourism Board. After we were looking around at the slighty overcrowded barbecue area on Sapi after our arrival we simply started to follow a path which turned out to be a hiking trail around the whole island. I guess it took us around 1 1/2h and after we were finally back at the beach most of the people had already left so we were able to enjoy swimming and snorkeling nearly on our own. It was definitely worth it and we had a great day on the island after all.
We decided to head out to the Tunku Abdul Rahman National park, a group of five islands clustered together just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu. We chose to dive with Diverse-Borneo, a company with good reviews based in the town, run by an Englishman called Mark. It proved to be an excellent day - we saw a turtle, swam with barracuda, plenty of Nemos (clown fish), and some of the best coral we have come across yet! Nigel Ryan reports from Malaya on the eve of the Malaysia Plan and looks at how such a racially mixed country hopes to profit from the creation of a greater Malaysia. Shots of Kuala Lumpur as commentary sets the racial context. Commentary explains the Malaysia Plan with maps of the area providing illustration. Ryan interviews Malayan Prime Minister Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Ryan asks him about the Malaysia Plan and if the threat of Communism is serious. Ryan also asks him if he intends to form a non-Communist or an anti-Communist Malaysia. The Tuanku discusses British bases in Malaya: they can be used for Commonwealth but not SEATO purposes. Also mentions the multi-racial nature of Malayan society. Date: 02/11/1961
In the final part of our Merdeka Series on Current Affairs, "Many Voices, One History", we take you back in time to the eve of Merdeka Day in 1970, where Tunku Abdul Rahman delivered his last nationally-broadcasted speech as Prime Minister. In this heartfelt speech, he announced that he will be stepping down after 2 years as chief minister, and 13 years as the first Malaysian Prime Minister. The Tunku also said he will be recommending that Tun Abdul Razak to replace him. The speech also came one year after the 1969 racial riots. Tunku Abdul Rahman urged all Malaysians to "never, never forget" the incident, that he called "a social and mental earthquake -- one that shook us to the core" and that "we must NEVER, NEVER forget" Themes from the speech -- UNITY, GOODWILL, LOYALTY -- as still rel...
