Roland Joseph Culver, OBE (31 August 1900 – 1 March 1984) was an English stage, film, and television actor.
After Highgate School, he joined the Royal Air Force and served as a pilot from 1918 to 1919. After considering other careers, he turned to acting, graduating from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He debuted on the stage in 1924 at Hull Repertory Theatre and, by 1931, was appearing in films in which he was known for his portrayals of impeccable English gentlemen not given to displays of emotion. In the 1960s, he branched out into television before finally retiring in 1982. In 1960 he appeared in Five Finger Exercise at the Music Box Theatre in New York City. He was nominated for the 1966 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for Ivanov. In 1974, he played the irascible Duke of Omnium and Gatherum in the popular BBC adaptation of 'The Pallisers'.
He lost half a lung to tuberculosis.
He was married twice, first to actress, director, and casting agent Daphne Rye between 1932 and 1946, then to Nan Hopkins from 1947 until his death from a heart attack in 1984. With his first wife, he had two children: actor Michael Culver and Robin Culver.
Roger Livesey and Roland Culver perform a scene from the 1974 BBC TV series, The Pallisers. They had both appeared in scenes from Powell & Pressburger's classic film The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp some 30 years ealier.
A scout leader takes his troop on an ocean cruise, pursues a beautiful duchess and is stalked by a murderer.
Similar in story-line to ‘Footsteps in the Fog', Gaslight', ‘Midnight Lace' and many others, with touches of ‘Rebecca', this rarity from 1951 has a relatively small cast with David Farrar, who made a definitive mark in ‘Black Narcissus' followed by ‘The Small Back Room', in the lead. Irish actress Geraldine Fitzgerald returned from the States for this (and just one other film, ‘So Evil, My Love" with Ann Todd) and is having a relationship with Farrar while the nominal Edwina is dying in her bed upstairs. When she is discovered to have been murdered, Roland Culver steals the film with a tremendous performance as the inspector who uncovers the actual murderer, not forgetting an acerbic and taciturn turn (sorry!) by Jean Cadell. You are kept in suspense as to who the culprit is till the end, ...

Sir John Gielgud and Dame Edith Evans headline the cast in this production, which was recorded in 1953, and was released the following year on the EMI Columbia label. Gielgud had a long and distinguished association with this play. He plays the long-suffering Jack Worthing, and Dame Edith Evans is in one of her most famous roles, as Lady Bracknell. It could be said that she pretty much defined the role, and in fact was responsible for a popular catchphrase "A Haaaanndbaaaag?". Oscar Wilde wrote this immensely popular three-act play in 1895. Many would refer to this as the wittiest comedy in the English language. Its subtitle 'A Trivial Comedy for Serious People' indicates the nature of what lies within. It is a play about the only subjects that Wilde would admit to taking seriously--wit, ...
