Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno,RDI (/ˈiːnoʊ/; born 15 May 1948 and originally christened Brian Peter George Eno), professionally known as Brian Eno or simply Eno, is an English musician, composer, record producer, singer, and visual artist, known as one of the principal innovators of ambient music. Born in Suffolk, Eno studied under Roy Ascott at Ipswich Civic College and later attended Colchester Institute art school in Essex, England, taking inspiration from minimalist painting, cybernetics, and experimental music techniques during his time there. He joined the band Roxy Music as synthesiser player in the early 1970s. The group's success in the glam rock scene came quickly, but Eno soon became tired of touring and of conflicts with lead singer Bryan Ferry, leaving the group in 1973 to record innovative solo albums that would explore various styles and help pioneer ambient music.
Throughout the 1970s, Eno also worked as an influential collaborator and music producer, collaborating with Robert Fripp on the LPs (No Pussyfooting) (1973) and Evening Star (1975), David Bowie on his acclaimed "Berlin Trilogy," avant-garde musicians Jon Hassell and Harold Budd on several respective projects, and David Byrne on My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (released 1981), and further producing the acclaimed "No Wave" compilation No New York (1978), three albums by New York post-punk group Talking Heads, and albums by new wave bands Devo and Ultravox, among others. In subsequent decades, he has produced or worked on albums by U2, James, Laurie Anderson, Coldplay, Paul Simon, Grace Jones, James Blake and Slowdive, among others. Eno has also pursued multimedia ventures in parallel to his music career, including his mid-1970s development of "Oblique Strategies" (written with Peter Schmidt), a deck of cards featuring cryptic aphorisms intended to break creative blocks and encourage lateral thinking.
Eno may refer to:
Harold Budd (born May 24, 1936) is an American avant-garde composer and poet. He was born in Los Angeles, and raised in the Mojave Desert. He has developed a style of playing piano he terms "soft pedal".
Budd's career as a composer began in 1962. In the following years, he gained a notable reputation in the local avant-garde community. In 1966, he graduated from the University of Southern California (having studied under Ingolf Dahl) with a degree in musical composition. As he progressed, his compositions became increasingly minimalist. Among his more experimental works were two drone music pieces, "Coeur d'Orr" and "The Oak of the Golden Dreams". After composing a long-form gong solo titled "Lirio", he felt he had reached the limits of his experiments in minimalism and the avant-garde. He retired temporarily from composition in 1970 and began a teaching career at the California Institute of the Arts.[1]
"The road from my first colored graph piece in 1962 to my renunciation of composing in 1970 to my resurfacing as a composer in 1972 was a process of trying out an idea and when it was obviously successful abandoning it. The early graph piece was followed by the Rothko orchestra work, the pieces for Source Magazine, the Feldman-derived chamber works, the pieces typed out or written in longhand, the out-and-out conceptual works among other things, and the model drone works (which include the sax and organ "Coeur d'Orr" and "The Oak of the Golden Dreams", the latter based on the Balinese "Slendro" scale which scale I used again 18 years later on "The Real Dream of Sails").
Brian (sometimes spelled Bryan) is a male given name of Irish and Breton origin, as well as a surname of Occitan origin. It is common in the English-speaking world. It is possible that the name is derived from an Old Celtic word meaning "high" or "noble". For example, the element bre means "hill"; which could be transferred to mean "eminence" or "exalted one". The name is quite popular in Ireland, on account of Brian Boru, a 10th-century king of Ireland. The name was also quite popular in East Anglia during the Middle Ages. This is because the name was introduced to England by Bretons following the Norman Conquest. Bretons also settled in Ireland along with the Normans in the 12th century, and 'their' name was mingled with the 'Irish' version. Also, in the north-west of England, the 'Irish' name was introduced by Scandinavian settlers from Ireland. Within the Gaelic speaking areas of Scotland, the name was at first only used by professional families of Irish origin. It was the fourth most popular male name in England and Wales in 1934, but a sharp decline followed over the remainder of the 20th century and by 1994 it had fallen out of the top 100. It retained its popularity in the United States for longer; its most popular period there was from 1968–1979 when it consistently ranked between eighth and tenth.
Ambient 1: Music for Airports is the sixth studio album by Brian Eno. It was released by Polydor Records in 1978. The album consists of four compositions created by layering tape loops of differing lengths. It was the first of four albums released in Eno's "Ambient" series, a term which he coined to differentiate his experimental and minimalistic approach to composition from "the products of the various purveyors of canned music". Though it is not the earliest entry in the genre, it was the first album ever to be explicitly created under the label "ambient music."
Eno had previously created similarly quiet, unobtrusive music on albums such as Another Green World, Evening Star, Discreet Music, and Harold Budd's The Pavilion of Dreams (which he produced), but this was the first album to give it precedence as a cohesive concept.
The music was designed to be continuously looped as a sound installation, with the intent of defusing the tense, anxious atmosphere of an airport terminal. To achieve this, Eno sought to create music "as ignorable as it is interesting." Rather than brightening the atmosphere as typical background music does, Music for Airports is "intended to induce calm and a space to think." Eno conceived this idea while spending several hours waiting at Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany in the mid-1970s and being annoyed by the uninspired sound atmosphere.

The idealistic Jerome falls in love with Audrey, a student who models for life-drawing classes and who responds to his sweetness. But he has a rival: the clean-cut, manly Jonah, also a first-year drawing student, whose primitive work draws raves and Audrey's attention. As cynicism seems to corrode everything, Jerome is desperate to win.

Brian Eno is a man of many talents - he's known for his days in Roxy music and for working with David Bowie. He's produced many at the top of the musical industry and is also recognised as the architect of "ambient music". This week is a busy one for him. He has an album out and an art show with light and sound installations. Krishnan Guru-Murthy went to meet him.
BBC Click’s Spencer Kelly spends an afternoon talking art, science, music and potatoes with music legend and godfather of ambient music Brian Eno. His new app, Reflection, is a “generative” piece of music that changes every time you listen. In this extended chat we look in-depth at the rules and maths behind Reflection, where notes are altered depending on certain probabilities. We also hear some of Eno’s other ground-breaking generative work, including a very human robot drummer, some super-evil funk and a robot guitarist that could give Nile Rogers a run for his money. We look at his sound and visual art, including 77 million paintings, get a sneak peek inside his notebooks, and find out how he invented the legendary Oblique Strategies cards. A two-part interview with Brian Eno from the BBC 2 program "Riverside" in 1983, combined into a single video. The topics include natural versus electronic sounds, synthesizers, ambient music, New York, and video art. The University has made two edits to the second part for rights reasons: a clip of Roxy Music and rough footage from Apollo have been removed. However, the University believes that these can still be viewed online in a version located at: http://stuffem.wordpress.com/2007/10/20/video-archive-brian-eno-interview-1983

Lecture Date: 2012-02-24 AA First Year Lunchtime Lecture introduced by Valentin Bontjes van Beek. ‘… six weeks ago we were in a cab crossing the Thames on our way back to Notting Hill with Brian Eno and Diego Cortez – we’d just seen the Gerhard Richter and Pipilotti Rist shows. Brian was discussing the contents of a book project he has been talking about for a number of years: “… an attempt to answer the huge unanswered question, the dirty secret of the art world: what is art actually for?” … I think this would make a really inspiring talk for the First Year students …’.

Coldplay's Chris Martin dropped by the Rolling Stone studio yesterday to chat about his band's fifth album Mylo Xyloto, a record which reunites the English quartet with Viva la Vida collaborators Markus Dravs and Brian Eno. This time around, though, Eno was less involved in production and more engaged in the actual performances. "Brian Eno has become, not a session musician, but a player," says Martin. "He loves to just stand in the circle and play with the band. So he's kind of more of a band member than producer this time, which is very fun." Martin also spoke excitedly about the band's collaboration with Rihanna on the new song "Princess of China," noting that her contribution is the best singing on the record. Video by Matthew Murphy
a rare radio interview April 1974, Swedish Radio, L. Wretlind
"Tea Time at Brian Eno's House is based on an idea of being invited to tea at Brian Eno's house and what one might hear from his in-house sound installation. I tried to approach the mix in an “Eno-esque” fashion, building track upon track. The foundation of the mix is made up of long-form Eno cuts (Neroli, Thursday Afternoon, etc.) that play at very low levels throughout the mix. On top of that are Quiet American field recordings that fade in and out. On top of that are various Eno and other artist tracks mixed end to end and sometimes together. So, at any point in the mix, there are 2-5 things playing at the same time. The Eno speaking parts are from a long interview with him. I cut 2-10 second pieces at random from the track. I then assembled bunches of those pieces together, somewhat at...

A fun profile of and interview with Brian Eno, with German commentary plus subtitles whenever Eno speaks. The title has a subtitle of its own: "Eine Begegnung mit dem Professor des Pop". It is "Ein Film von Henning Lohner". Eno reads his own quotes in different styles, works on a mix of "Force Marker", talks about his background, conducts experiments with loudspeakers, and much more. Revenue from adverts running alongside this video goes to the rights owners of some of the music tracks it contains. The University does not receive any revenue from this video. Hey, there fancy pants
Play the songs that make us dance
Play the tunes that make the ladies swoon
A song for all the lonely hearts
Shattered dreams and broken parts
Feels like sunny days are coming soon
Hey Mr. Buttercup
Spin the wheel and try your luck
The spotlight's shining bright tonight on you
Bring along your lady friend
Do a dance from way back when
Tonight's the night when all your dreams come true
Hey there sour grapes
Down in the dumps, long in the face
Drinkin' down your dinner, all alone
Feelin' bad, feelin' blue
Tonight the rainbow ends with you
So sit on down and make yourself at home, so
Hey there fancy pants
Play the songs that make us dance
Play the tunes that make the ladies swoon
A song for all the lonely hearts
Shattered dreams and broken parts
Feels like sunny days are coming soon
Fancy pants
