Los Angeles (i/lɒs ˈændʒəlᵻs/ loss AN-jə-ləs or loss AN-jə-liss) (Spanish for "The Angels"), officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the state of California, and the county seat of Los Angeles County.
Situated in Southern California, Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, sprawling metropolis, and as a major center of the American entertainment industry. Los Angeles lies in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.

James Joseph "Jim" Croce (/ˈkroʊtʃi/; January 10, 1943 – September 20, 1973) was an American folk and popular rock singer of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Between 1966 and 1973, Croce released five studio albums and 11 singles. His singles "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "Time in a Bottle" both reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Croce was born in South Philadelphia, to James Albert Croce and his wife Flora Mary (née Babucci), both Italian Americans. Croce took a strong interest in music at a young age. At five, he learned to play his first song on the accordion, "Lady of Spain."
Croce attended Upper Darby High School in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania. After graduating in 1960, he studied at Malvern Preparatory School for a year before enrolling at Villanova University, where he majored in psychology and minored in German. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1965. Croce was a member of the Villanova Singers and the Villanova Spires. When the Spires performed off-campus or made recordings, they were known as The Coventry Lads. Croce was also a student disc jockey at WKVU (which has since become WXVU).
"Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" is a song written by American folk rock singer Jim Croce. Released as part of his 1973 album Life and Times, the song was a Number One pop hit for him, spending two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in July 1973. Billboard ranked it as the No. 2 song for 1973.
Croce was nominated for two 1973 Grammy awards in the Pop Male Vocalist and Record of the Year categories for "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown". It was his last number-one single before his death on September 20.
The song's title character is a man from the South Side of Chicago who, due to his size and attitude, has a reputation as the "baddest man in the whole damn town." One day, in a bar, he makes a pass at a pretty, married woman named Doris, whose jealous husband proceeds to beat Leroy brutally in the ensuing fight. In the end, Leroy Brown learns a lesson from this painful experience ( "Leroy Brown looked like a jigsaw puzzle with a couple of pieces gone"). During the lyrics about the fight, some background voices are heard quietly speaking.

The Coasters are an American rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group who had a string of hits in the late 1950s. Beginning with "Searchin'" and "Young Blood", their most memorable songs were written by the songwriting and producing team of Leiber and Stoller. Although the Coasters originated outside of mainstream doo-wop, their records were so frequently imitated that they became an important part of the doo-wop legacy through the 1960s.
The Coasters were formed in October 1955 as a spin-off of the Robins, a Los Angeles-based rhythm and blues group that included Carl Gardner and Bobby Nunn. The original Coasters were Carl Gardner, Billy Guy, Bobby Nunn, Leon Hughes (who was replaced by Young Jessie on a couple of their early Los Angeles recordings), and guitarist Adolph Jacobs. Jacobs left the group in 1959.
The songwriting team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller had started Spark Records, and in 1955 produced "Smokey Joe's Cafe" for the Robins (their 5th single with Leiber-Stoller). The record was popular enough for Atlantic Records to offer Leiber and Stoller an independent production contract to produce the Robins for the Atlantic label. Only two of the Robins—Gardner and Nunn—were willing to make the move to Atlantic, recording their first songs in the same studio as the Robins had done (Master Recorders). In late 1957, the group moved to New York and replaced Nunn and Hughes with Cornell Gunter and Will "Dub" Jones. The new quartet was from then on stationed in New York (although all had Los Angeles roots).

A former federal law enforcement officer named Gary Fishell sings a song about Michael Brown at a charity party hosted by formed LAPD cop. The song, which parodies Jim Croce's "Bad Bad Leroy Brown," was performed at a charity golf tournament hosted by retired LAPD officer Joe Myers earlier this month, and a recording was published by TMZ. The full recorded lyrics: Michael Brown learned a lesson about a messin' with a badass policeman And he's bad, bad Michael Brown, baddest thug in the whole damn town Badder than old King Kong, meaner than a junkyard dog Two men took to fightin', and Michael punched in through the door And Michael looked like some old Swiss cheese, his brain was splattered on the floor And he's dead, dead Michael Brown, deadest man in the who...

The LAPD is conducting an investigation to determine if cops currently on the force attended a dinner at the Glendale Elks Lodge which featured a horrible parody of "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," making fun of Michael Brown's death. The situation happened when retired LAPD Officer Joe Myers threw a charity golf tournament a week ago Monday, and then threw a dinner afterward at the Elks Lodge. As 50-60 people watched, Gary Fishell, a P.I. and former federal law enforcement officer, reportedly sang the parody. If any active officers were at the event, the LAPD could possibly discipline them for exhibiting "conduct unbecoming of a police officer." http://www.tmz.com/2014/12/23/michael-brown-song-lapd-investigation-parody-elks/ http://www.wochit.com

http://www.TotallyGuitars.com/ Today my goal was to keep the News shorter than last week, maybe 5 minutes or so was the plan. You can guess what happened. At least it was about 5 minutes shorter than last week. The stuff I really wanted to get to included a couple of new challenges coming next week, one requiring listening to The Beatles, as well as a few comments on our viral thread on the Beginnings of TG. I think I got to most of that, along with some really random resurrecting of pieces that I should have practiced. The new releases for the week featured Jim Croce's Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, Arlo Guthrie's Coming Into Los Angeles, Christina Perri's A Thousand Years (thanks to Vanessa!), and Things We Said Today by The Beatles. We also brought back a Student Review and a Fly On The Wall, ...

We begin a new case very similar to the last, which of course means, black bars! I look forward to the day I can be more elegant with my editing. So we look for clues and then get on to the interrogatin' a poor bereaved family! This is a semi-blind play through of L.A. Noire where we get to play detective around Los Angeles in 1947. May contain bad driving, heavy drinking, sexism and mild racism, violence, nudity and a lot of swearing. The game is also fairly mature. The biggest and most powerful Kingston Posse was the "Shower Posse" led by Lester "Jim Brown" Coke and Vivian Blake. After his father's death in police custody, Christopher Coke took over and when Jamaican police took him into custody it took over 100 deaths in the Tivoli Gardens housing project to get the job done. http://www.GangsterReport.com
You've been here forever
I've
I've been here too
They said you were clever
Let's see what you can do
Cause I never wanted
Wanted to leave it
Said I can't believe it
Los Angeles
(Los Angeles)
Los Angeles
(Yeah I can't believe it)
Los Angeles
(Yeah)
Los Angeles
(Said I...)
Things can't be easy
You're getting older
The pressure's building
Living in Van Nuys
Cal-i-forn-i-a
What else could I say?
Cause I never wanted
Wanted to believe it
Said I can't believe it
Los Angeles
(Los Angeles)
Los Angeles
(Yeah I can't believe it)
Los Angeles
(The west side)
Los Angeles
You said you were leaving
Heading out to the east coast
Cause your heart was bleeding
And people can be so
But you must remember
That it ain't the weather
That's gonna protect you
They will still neglect you
But I'll always love you
Said I've always loved you
(So come on home)
Said I've always loved you
So get back in your car and head west to California
The sun will be shining
And we could be dining by the ocean blue
Cause I never wanted
Wanted to leave
Said I can't believe it
Los Angeles
(Los Angeles)
Los Angeles
(Yeah I can't believe it)
Los Angeles
(Los fues)
