Hey guys Marty Schwartz here again with another Thursday gear video. I decided to find some pedals for $50 or under to show you what you can get on a budget.
The Boss DS-1 is a classic pedal that many of you have asked me about. I'm excited for you to see the sounds you can get for such a low price. I bought mine used. The one con is the pedal didn't boost my volume as much as other distortion pedals I've used. Not sure if something was wrong with this one as I bought it used for around 20 or 30 bucks.

En este vídeo vamos a hacer una comparativa de 3 pedales de distorsión y overdrive clásicos como son el Ibanez Tubescreamer y el Boss DS-1 y el SD1.
Son tres pedales muy conocidos y que tienen usos bastante diferentes entre si de modo que vamos a tocar un rato con cada uno de ellos y explicar para que nos gusta utilizarlos y que posibilidades tienen.
También tenemos que reconocer que aunque tenemos pedales el sonido que más utilizamos para cubrir la gama de overdrive o distorsión suave es el canal overdrive del amplficador, que normalmente es un Laney VC-15.

Boss DS-1
The Boss DS-1 is a distortion pedal for guitar, manufactured by the Roland Corporation under the brand name Boss since 1978. The first distortion unit made by Boss, it has become a classic effect, used by many notable guitar players. Boss produced a successor, the DS-2.
DS-1
Circuit design
The DS-1 has a very simple circuit, based on a single op-amp. The distortion is produced using a variable gain circuit with diodes shorting the output to ground to produce hard clipping of the input waveform similar to the Pro Co RAT distortion pedal. This distortion stage is followed by a passive tone filter and volume control. The tone control is scooped in the midrange. It consists of a simple fixed -6dB/oct low pass filter and a simple fixed -6dB/oct high pass filter using a potentiometer to mix the two signals. Given this, the pedal can sound quite "acid" and nasal. Its simple circuit is very easy to modify, several mods are available on line and they make it a better and more usable pedal. Notable modifiers of the pedal include Steve McKinley of McKinley Electronics.

Distortion
Distortion is the alteration of the original shape (or other characteristic) of something, such as an object, image, sound or waveform. Distortion is usually unwanted, and so engineers strive to eliminate distortion, or minimize it. In some situations, however, distortion may be desirable. The important signal processing operation of heterodyning is based on nonlinear mixing of signals to cause intermodulation. Distortion is also used as a musical effect, particularly with electric guitars.
The addition of noise or other outside signals (hum, interference) is not deemed distortion, though the effects of quantization distortion are sometimes deemed noise. A quality measure that explicitly reflects both the noise and the distortion is the Signal-to-noise-and-distortion (SINAD) ratio.

Son tres pedales muy conocidos y que tienen usos bastante diferentes entre si de modo que vamos a tocar un rato con cada uno de ellos y explicar para que nos gusta utilizarlos y que posibilidades tienen. También tenemos que reconocer que aunque tenemos pedales el sonido que más utilizamos para cubrir la gama de overdrive o distorsión suave es el canal overdrive del amplficador, que normalmente es un Laney VC-15.

The Boss DS-1 is a classic pedal that many of you have asked me about. I'm excited for you to see the sounds you can get for such a low price. I bought mine used. The one con is the pedal didn't boost my volume as much as other distortion pedals I've used. Not sure if something was wrong with this one as I bought it used for around 20 or 30 bucks.
