Bachmann

Bachmann is a surname of Switzerland and Germany. It originates as a description of the bearer as dwelling near a brook (Bach), such as a farm "Hofstatt am Bach" also called "Bachmanns Hofstatt" near Hinwil or Dürnten (recorded 1387), or the "Hof zum Bach" near Richterswil (recorded 1555).

Low German variants of the name include Beckman(n); Beekman(n).

Switzerland

There are three main lines of Bachmann families in Switzerland,

Canton of Thurgau/Canton of Zürich: Attested from 1361 at Stettfurt and Thundorf. Protestants since the Swiss Reformation, this branch came to riches trading wine and linen during the 18th century. Jakob Huldreich Bachmann was a national councillor and a federal judge.

Canton of Zug: attested in Menzingen and Zug from 1359. Several reeves and city councillors in the 15th to 16th century.

Canton of Glarus: this branch moved into Glarus from the Linth plain in the 17th century, and occupied a number of political and military offices in Glarus in the 18th to 19th centuries.

Thomas the Tank Engine

Thomas the Tank Engine is a small fictional steam locomotive in The Railway Series books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher. He became the most popular character in the series, and is the titular character in the accompanying television spin-off series, Thomas & Friends.

Thomas is a steam engine and has a number 1 painted on his side. All of the locomotives in The Railway Series were based on prototypical engines; Thomas has origins in the E2 Class designed by Lawson Billinton in 1913. Thomas first appeared in 1946 in the second book in the series, Thomas the Tank Engine, and was the focus of the four short stories contained within. Thomas' best friends are Percy and Toby.

In 1979, the British writer/producer Britt Allcroft came across the books, and arranged a deal to bring the stories to life as the TV series Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends (later simplified to Thomas & Friends). The program became an award-winning hit around the world, with a vast range of spin-off commercial products.

Thomas & Friends

Thomas & Friends (titled Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends prior to 2003) is a British children's television series. It had its first broadcast on the ITV network in Great Britain in 1984 and first aired in the United States on PBS KIDS in 2004. It is based on The Railway Series of books by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher Awdry. These books deal with the adventures of a group of anthropomorphised locomotives and road vehicles who live on the fictional Island of Sodor. The books were based on stories Wilbert told to entertain his son, Christopher, during his recovery from measles. Many of the stories from the first four series are based on events from Awdry's personal experience.

Thomas and friends Bachmann, Hornby HO/OO model train fun. Unboxing of Spencer, Devious Diesel, Troublesome Trucks, Annie & Clarabel, Spencer's Special Expensive Coach. Also a look over the mint in box Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway toys I picked up at a local train show. I have the Learning Curve era Thomas, Percy, Madge, Whiff, Isabella and Sodor Weather Tracker that was nice to find. Anyway it's always fun to get out the train set and race the trains around the layout. My son loves to have really unusual diesel train combinations and high speed crashes are always part of the fun. The DVD I speak about is called Trouble On The Tracks, the first episode on that DVD is Thomas The Quarry Engine. This episode is very much like the earlier Thomas & Friends stories where the engines are all in a squabble. It was refreshing to see this style of Thomas storytelling. Also a sneak peek at the 2015 Epping Model railway show, sadly the numbers were down and a lack of exhibits was disappointing to see. The most amazing exhibit there was Smuggler's Cove made by Geoff Nott and Michael Flack. Sadly Geoff passed away during the construction of this layout. It's On30 scale and it's completely saturated in the most amazing model railway detail and scenery based on the New England area in the USA. Smuggler's Cove is destined to be permanently exhibited in a new model railway exhibit established in Sacramento, California. Review and unboxing of a slightly damaged boxed set found at a store called Bargain Hunt. It is apparently a returned item as the track and locomotive appear used. The front wheel assembly was very loose on the steam locomotive but was easily fixed with a screwdriver. The knuckle style couplers on the locomotive look more realistic but are not as functional as the rapido style couplers. However, it does come with a set of rapido couplers to replace if you like. This is not a toy for children as it is easily broken and very hard to place on the track. It would likely frustrate a child. But it is fun to look at once you get it set up. It is a really could started set for N Scale as it comes with a large oval of track and a lot of freight cars plus some poles and signs for decoration. Bachmann Trains has introduced a new Percy for the Thomas and Friends series of large scale trains. This unit is very exciting as Bachmann has preinstalled DCC with onboard sound. It's exciting to see items that you can take right off the shelf and run and get sound and remote control without having to deal with proprietary systems. It seems to me that if some manufacturers had adopted DCC initially and not have created proprietary systems or patchworked subsystems they might still be in business. I hope we start to see DCC preinstalled with sound in other Bachmann products. And I hope that other manufacturers will take notice.
