Jonathan Michael Avnet (born November 17, 1949), better known as Jon Avnet, is an American director, writer and producer.
Avnet was born in Brooklyn, the son of Joan Bertha (née Grossman) and Lester Francis Avnet, a corporate executive with Avnet (a Global distributor of IT & electronics). He attended Great Neck North High School in Great Neck, New York.
Avnet directed his first movie, Fried Green Tomatoes, in 1991, followed by The War in 1994, with Elijah Wood in the lead and Kevin Costner in a supporting role as his father. He directed Up Close & Personal in 1996, which was loosely based on the life of Jessica Savitch. It was written by Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne and starred Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer. Avnet addressed political issues with his fourth film Red Corner in 1997, a movie about the Chinese legal system, starring Richard Gere and Bai Ling. Because of Gere's presence and support for Tibet and the Dalai Lama, they could not film in China, and the settings had to be recreated in Southern California. Avnet, however, did film a few scenes in Beijing and also put in some footage of actual Chinese executions. Avnet was also the executive producer of the 2010 movie Black Swan.
Avnet, Inc. is a Business-to-business technology distributor headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Electronics Supply & Manufacturing magazine reports that Avnet Inc., a Fortune 500 company, may be the world's largest franchised distributor of electronic components and subsystems. Avnet has more than 50 centers and locations in more than 34 countries.
In 1921, Charles Avnet, a 33-year-old Russian immigrant, began buying surplus radio parts and selling them to the public on the Radio Rows of United States port cities. In the mid-1920s, when factory-made radios began to replace radio parts, Avnet adjusted his distribution pipeline and began selling parts to manufacturers and dealers. During the Great Depression, Avnet shifted the focus from retailing to wholesaling.
In the mid-1920s to the early 1930s, Avnet diversified by branching out into car radio kits and automobile assembly kits. In World War II Avnet made antennas for the U.S. armed forces. His son, Lester Avnet, joined the business at that time.
Julia O'Hara Stiles (born March 28, 1981) is an American actress. She first gained prominence for her lead roles in teen films such as 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) for which she won MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, Down to You (2000) and Save the Last Dance (2001) winning the Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie Actress. Her career progressed to starring in films such as The Business of Strangers (2001), Mona Lisa Smile (2003) and The Omen (2006). She guest starred as Lumen Pierce in the fifth season of the Showtime series Dexter (2010), a role that earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
Most recently, Stiles had a supporting role in Silver Linings Playbook (2012), and also appears in Blue, a web series from WIGS (2012–present). Other film roles include romantic comedy The Prince and Me (2004), noir-inspired drama-thriller A Little Trip to Heaven (2005), British-Canadian co-production The Cry of the Owl (2009), Between Us (2012) and Out of the Dark (2014). She also played the supporting character Nicky Parsons in the Bourne film series (2002–2007), a role which she will reprise in 2016.
Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 comedy-drama film based on the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg. Directed by Jon Avnet and written by Flagg and Carol Sobieski, it stars Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Mary-Louise Parker. It tells the story of a Depression-era friendship between two women, Ruth and Idgie, and a 1980s friendship between Evelyn, a middle-aged housewife, and Ninny, an elderly woman who knew Ruth and Idgie. The centerpiece and parallel story concerns the murder of Ruth's abusive husband, Frank, and the accusations that follow. It received a generally positive reception from film critics and was nominated for two Academy Awards.
Evelyn Couch (Bates), a timid, unhappy housewife in her forties, meets elderly Ninny Threadgoode (Tandy) in an Anderson, Alabama nursing home. She, over several encounters with Evelyn, tells her the story of the now-abandoned town of Whistle Stop, and the people who lived there. The film's subplot concerns Evelyn's dissatisfaction with her marriage, her life, her growing confidence, and her developing friendship with Ninny. The narrative switches several times between Ninny's story, which is set between World War I and World War II, and Evelyn's life in 1980s Birmingham.
WIGS is a web channel, part of the YouTube Original Channel Initiative. It presents a series of short films and documentaries about the lives of women. WIGS offers broadcast-quality dramatic fare designed to appeal to female viewers.
Each installment is around five to ten minutes in length. The channel was co-created by Jon Avnet, producer of Black Swan and Risky Business, and Rodrigo Garcia, who directed Albert Nobbs and In Treatment.
Jon Avnet and Rodrigo Garcia developed and wrote a handful of series and they recruited writers and directors such as Lesli Linka Glatter, Rose Troche, Amy Lippman,Marta Kauffman, and most recently, Julia Stiles, to direct projects for the channel. They have recruited actors such as Jennifer Beals, Jena Malone, Troian Bellisario, and Julia Stiles.
WIGS officially launched on May 14, 2012. WIGS releases new episodes every Friday on YouTube. The channel's first season includes 100 episodes of short films, series and documentaries. "Jan," written and directed by Jon Avnet, was the first series released by WIGS. While the channel's tagline "Where it gets interesting" does not fully match the acronym WIGS; on their website, the words "Where It Gets . . ." are used to begin to describe each series, and the last word is changed. For example, for the first series, "Jan," the tagline is, "Where It Gets Spicy."
